When the opportunity to spend 2 years in Oz arose through Julians job, I can't say I was immediately thrilled. I think we sometimes like to wrap our security blankets round us and find it easier to stay with what we know. But on the 1st September 2011 we found ourselves winging our way to Sydney and better late than never I am finally getting round to setting up a proper blog site to record our adventures whilst here.

Woke to a pretty good morning and after a hearty breakfast, had a look around Te Anau. Bought a beautiful Paua Shell and a Green Jade Pounamu ring, two of the natural treasures New Zealand is famous for. Our destination today - Curio Bay on the South Coast Stopped on the way at the most southerly lighthouse at Waipapa Point and came across to huge Fur Seals on the beach. They were beasts and kept a healthy distance. Arrived at the very quirky Curio Bay Camping Ground. If you are looking for luxury, this certainly isnt it. The washing up area and toilets were in strange little round concrete buildings as was the shower that needed coins, but the water was hot and it all worked. But, if you can cope with much less it was ... read more

Friday 11th - We had a slow start to the day today after all the driving of the last few days. We were also supposed to be white water Rafting in the afternoon, booked yesterday on the drive in, but due to all the rain New Zealand's experienced recently, this has been cancelled as too dangerous. When you looked at any of the raging rivers this was hardly surprizing, so we had to have a quick change of plan. I had read how one of the best things to do in Queenstown in the summer other than thrill seeking rides is a trip up to ‘The Remarkables’! These are ski fields, and a 13km gravel road takes you up to the ski lodge at 1,600m, which is apparently about the highest public-access road you can get ... read more

Thurs 10th- Well, that night we had a thunder storm soooo loud Josh thought it was an earthquake at which point we wondered if a camper van might be a tad too conductive to electricity. Mmmm. Anyway, by the morning the skies brightened and, whilst Julian decided to stay smelly, Josh & I got round a shower with a quick, very refreshing dip in the lake, joined only by a few not too impressed ducks. After breakfast and our little mug of sunshine as Josh called it, we set off for Mount Cook. The drive was beautiful with 55kms being alongside the equally stunning opaque-blue Lake Pukaki. The view of Mount Cook from the Lookout information centre on the way was beyond description, but Josh will remember it as the place where we lost one of ... read more

A lot has happened since my last blog and I may go back over some of this when I get chance, but for now I hope you enjoy hearing of our travels in New Zealand. We did over 2,500kms in a tiny camper and I thought it was the most fantastic place I have seen. Although I had researched the area, we had no campsites booked, and no firm plans, which gave us more flexibility and added to the adventure. The people were lovely and the food & wine fantastic (couldn’t find a bad Sauv Blanc or Pinot Noir)! It wasn’t always sunny and it did rain A LOT, but we are British so can cope with that. But it was an ‘awesome’ place and we saw and did some pretty special things in our 10 ... read more

Ok, this is the last of this weeks uploads and hope you're all not getting too fed up of the blogs but trying to share as much as possible with family and friends:) It is a bit heavier than normal days out but hopefully still worth a read. As the title suggests, Sydney holds this event every other year. This year its running from 27th June -16 September and is titled 'all our relations'. From one write up I saw, the works aim to 'directly address current local and global issues, such as migration, contamination, corruption and coercion' presented 'in a way related to our senses, rather than in the negative and critical way we have become accustomed to'. 100 artists are exhibiting overall with the event being spread over different venues: The Art Gallery of ... read more

The last few days have definately seen an improvement in the weather. Its still been very chilly at night, but in the day its been sunny with temperatures reaching over 20 degrees on several occasions. With the forecast for last Saturday promising to be good, we decided to continue our exploration of the Sydney suburbs, this time the Eastern Suburbs and the stretch of beaches between the famous Bondi and Coogee. There is a great 6km coastal walk from Bondi-Coogee which Julian has done before, but I am saving that myself until we have company. Today we just wanted to explore the area by car and get a feel of the area. We started to the south of Coogee and wandered down to the beach which was quite sheltered and so very popular with families. Most ... read more

Julian & I have recently decided that we need to explore more of Sydney to get to know it better. So the Saturday before last, we purchased a day pass from our local newsagents for $21 (about £14) each which allows unlimited trips on Sydney's buses, trains and ferries so brilliant value and a great opportunity to explore. The first part of our journey was a 45min very easy bus ride into the city. These are regular, pretty much on time and always really well used by ALL ages (in sharp contrast to my recent bus trips in the UK that only seemed to be used by those with free bus passes, probably due to the fact they're so blinking expensive). We got off at the nearest stop to Circular Quay which was just a short ... read more

Thought I would just post some normal everyday stuff in Oz over the next couple of weeks as not really done that yet in blog form. Can’t believe we have been back from Fiji over a week now. When we arrived back it was late and felt VERY cold. Found it hard to believe just few hours previous we were sat on the beach in bikini and sarong (well not Julian obviously). Sailed through customs with my declared shells and parchment drawings etc only to have to wait ages for Hertz to sort out a new long-term hire car under stupid terms of Selex that defies all logic. Went to bed that night in trillions of layers and bed socks!! Once back, it was great to be able to see properly how Ebony had ... read more

Tuesday 17th June - So back 2 stops towards Nadi on the Yasawa Flyer to Octopus Island where transferred to smaller fishing boat for Viwa Island Resort as off the main ferry track. The captain handed over to youngest member while he and his mate had smoko break and it was a fun, VERY bumpy ride. Arrived to the now normal greeting of musicians and scented frangipan garlands. Only 11 bure’s here that accommodate 28 maximum guests, but learnt only 2 other couples at the moment so pretty much have the resort to ourselves and the poshest one yet. All bures on the waters edge complete with sunbeds, hammock, white softest sand ever then straight into the sea. Mmmmm. Viwa Island is a very low lying coral atoll that was once below sea level and no ... read more

Wednesday 13thJune - Woken by small drops of rain blewing in through the wooden slats which was quite pleasant until they got slowly bigger followed by huge downpour at which point we had to act. Realize Fiji cant be this lush without a lot of rain! The mozzie spray hasn't been working too good and as usual they have taken a real shine to me, one particularly attractive welt on my stomach is definitely the champion so far. Julian tried the $10 for a bag of washing, to find his white t-shirt has come back blue and he's gained a few xtra items. However, Nanuya resort is Fijian and extremely well run, the Bures are very clean and good standard, the food is excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful so would fully recommend this ... read more
