We are thoroughly enjoying our time in Exmouth. We have had four days here, and both agree that it is somewhere we would happily holiday for a longer period of time. Exmouth, with Cape Range National Park and Ningaloo Reef on one side of the peninsula and Exmouth Gulf on the other, has so much to offer holiday makers. Navy Jetty, which is a working jetty owned by the Department of Defence, is rated as one of the top ten dive sites in the world. We are told that the marine life there is amazing, but it is a restricted site available only to certified dive tours. No snorkelling there for us. There are fishing charters providing a game fishing experience. For the more casual holiday makers like us, the are many sites to fish from ... read more

We had a couple of close calls today, and one small disaster. The first close call was out on Ningaloo Reef. We went out on a reef viewing and snorkelling tour in a glass bottom boat. It is a great way to experience the reef. A few minutes after starting snorkelling, I glanced over to my right to see a shark swimming past me. I took a second to panic and swam straight back to the boat. The crew reassured me that it was probably a reef shark and not to worry. They did appear a little surprised though. I only saw the back half; so really don’t know what it was. It wasn’t until the tour was almost over that the tour leader informed us that there were five metre tiger sharks on the reef. ... read more

Who would have thought the gentle pursuit of caravanning and camping could be so dangerous. First of all there is the risk of dying of boredom being the passenger while traveling from point A to point B or C or D etc. If you can survive that, then you must contend will everything Mother Nature throws at you. At Fitzroy Crossing, warnings had been posted about Singapore ants, tiny ants that would get into everything, so they recommended spraying around table and chair legs and even the wheels with ant spray to guard against them. At Turkey Creek/Warnum, we had to contend with bulls marauding through the van park. At Wycliffe’s Well there was a not to friendly donkey roaming around freely. In Karijini National Park, campers were warned about wild dingos, and told not to ... read more

We are back from the wilderness. Well not quite wilderness, Karijini National Park in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. One of the doctors at work said we mustn’t miss it and he was right. What a beautiful place it is. Red hills and escarpments, rich in iron ore, dotted with clumps of spinifex and elegant white trunked ghost gums. The park features several gorges, some of which we visited and some we missed out on. We really wanted to go to Hammersly Gorge a two hundred kilometre return trip to the far north corner of the park, but when we got out to the turn-off, there was a sign stating that the road was closed for construction. Disappointed, we paid a visit to Weano Gorge for a picnic lunch and a short walk to a couple of ... read more

We arrived at Karijini national park. It was really dusty and the campsite was huge. (140 sites!).We set up camp and got our swimmers on to do a little walk down to the nearby falls as we had not had a shower for a few days. But it was getting dark and the water would be freezing, so mum just ran down. The next day we walked in three different gorges. The first one started off easy and then it got harder. It was called Weano gorge. We had to follow markers on the rocks and wade through the water in a few places. The next one was called Hancock gorge. It was really good. You had to climb on ladders, swim through water and then do the spider walk  . But then we couldn’t ... read more

We were up early and made our way to the hostel entrance where the bus from our boat came to pick us up. After picking everyone up we made our way out to where the boat was tied up. We climbed into the small boat that took us out to our big boat for the day. We were doing an eco-tour as the whale shark season officially ended on August 1st. But we were told a spotter plane would still fly out looking for them and if we saw one we could jump in with them for some extra money. We went a little ways out and had our first snorkel trip off the boat. Lots of coral around and lots of big parrotfish. The waves were quite strong as well and it was a good ... read more

Thursday 9th – When we first arrived in Exmouth we picked up a leaflet giving details of an hour long coral viewing tour. We knew we would enjoy it and late yesterday we managed to get on this morning’s trip. We were both up and about before the alarm went off and ready to go by 8.30. The boat left from the Tantabiddi Boat Ramp we had passed yesterday so we knew where we had to go and made sure we were there well before 9:10 to register. The tour guide, Alek, who also owned the business, was an interesting character - he was of Polish origin but had lived all over the world, including quite a long time in Wales which possibly explained his rather strange accent. But his passion was diving and photography and ... read more

Tuesday 7th – it was a beautiful morning with not a cloud in the sky but today we were leaving this tiny piece of paradise that is Coral Bay. We were packed up and ready to go by 8.30 and so had time for a last wander along by the beach and up to the lookout. There were already plenty of people about and a few who had also strolled to the lookout. It was very easy to see why retired folk from Perth came up here for the winter – why wouldn’t you? – it’s beautiful. Eventually we managed to tear ourselves away and we were on the road by about 9.30. Besides us having a rest from travelling, PIE had also had a good rest as she hadn’t moved an inch for seven days ... read more

Our friend Lorraine kindly took us to Perth airport to catch the 2hr flight to Exmouth. We were excited at the prospect of seeing whale sharks and had bought masks and snorkels for the trip. Sea Breezes used to be part of an American Naval Base (600 US personnel were stationed there). It still operates but on a smaller scale now run by the Australian Navy who have 100 personnel stationed at the communication centre. The rooms are self catering, clean and functional and are the nearest to the reef and national park . Exmouth itself is an interesting place. It takes its name from the ocean adjacent to the town, it was named by Captain Phillip Parker King in 1818. Its renowned for being one of the most treacherous coastlines.
