Day 16 (8/12/2019) Last full day in Mansfield. Quite a warm day as hot weather looming. Spent the day packing up slowly & taking a few short leisurely walks. Deb decided to jump in the pool to cool off for a while. Day 17 (9/12/2019) Departed Mansfield at 10.20am. Got fuel on the way out of Mansfield. Quite a relaxing drive with a bit of side wind in spots. Stopped in Yea for a morning tea & rest at 11.20am. Went to The Provender Bakehouse where the food is absolutely delicious. Will make it a definite place to stop at in future. Departed Yea at 11.50am. The drive on the Melba Highway was adventurous & heart attack stuff. Came around a bend into a long straight to see a vehicle heading towards us overtaking 4 other ... read more

Day 12 (4/12/2019) Recovery day today to rest up. Took a leisurely walk around Mansfield, enjoying the cooler weather before the heat arrives next week. Had the trout we caught for lunch which was absolutely delicious. Nothing beats fresh fish that just falls apart & has that nice clean taste. Had an afternoon siesta which means I must have needed the rest. Done a lot of walking on this trip. Dinner tonight was satay sticks & mashed potatoes. Day 13 (5/12/2019) Got up at 5.30am for the drive to Big River. Wanted to fish this area earlier in the day before the sun got up. On the way drove around a bend to find a kangaroo in the middle of the road, but it quickly moved out of the way. Arrived at Big River just after ... read more

Day 9 (1/12/2019) Awoke to a cold morning with constant drizzling rain. Was a noisy night as there was a large group of motorcyclists staying in the caravan park. A small handful of them making loud noise throughout the night made it difficult to get a decent sleep. Shame people are ignorant & cant be respectful of the curfew hours. Went for a drive down to Goughs Bay near Lake Eildon & back through the Howqua Valley & Delatite area, coming out at Merrijig. What else to do on a cold wet miserable day but pop into the Merrijig Hunt Club pub for a light lunch, followed by a visit to the Social Bandit Brewery for a drink by the wood fire. Returned to the caravan as the temperatures had not reached double figures all day. ... read more

Day 1 (23/11/2019) Departed Cranbourne at 8.35am. After tediously making our way through traffic, we finally got onto the Hume Highway. Taking our time & with a good tail wind, we stopped at Avenel Roadhouse at 11.10am for a cuppa & toilet stop. Back on the road at 11.35am, traffic became more prolific for a Saturday. The BP at Glenrowan North loomed, so decided to top up with fuel as no way of knowing how much fuel would be where we were going. Negotiating roadworks on the way to Myrtleford, we took the turnoff & arrived at the Dederang Hotel at 3.20pm & parked in our spot at the rear of the hotel. Took our time setting up the van as we would be running on battery. Popped into the hotel for a drink & booked ... read more

When Cathy finally arrived at Melbourne - her train was an hour late - the weather was atrocious. It was cold, wet and very blowy - Antarctic winds are not unknown here, and we nearly got blown over trying to cross the street. What to do on a day like that? Get under cover and go shopping! Off we trotted after the storm had abated to the Queen Victoria Market, a massive affair with loads of fab fresh food and many interesting things... and, most importantly, all undercover. (Cj: the fruit and veg were very appet, the ‘handicrafts’ much less so). Later we headed down into the heart of the central business district (CBD) where there are some great examples of “old” buildings....we’re talking circa 1900 so not old at all... and some very quaint lanes ... read more

The weather finally turned on Monday...it was glorious! Melbourne has the largest and longest tram network in the world. The network is comprehensive but slow. Nevertheless we used the good weather and the trams to explore the wider environs .. places like Fitzroy, North Melbourne and the like. You never know what you find and we found all sorts of quirky shops. E.g a great lighting store that had me thinking about my lounge lighting again... also a fine fabrics shop which enticed Cathy into buying ..... ooh err that luggage is looking a bit stuffed. In the evening we explored Chinatown. There are times in Melbourne when it feels like an Asian city. At least 50% of the guests in our hotel are Chinese and there are masses of tourists from China, Korea, Japan everywhere. ... read more

Cathy & I are in Australia although we’ve not been together that much. Cathy came out on 1st October and has spent 4 weeks with daughter Nik and Granddaughter Solli doing all sorts of home improvement projects. I did my share too... but we’ll spare you the details.. I then went off to do a Railway Study tour, organised by the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (where I’ve been a member for over 40 years...good grief). We did a week in Sydney when I commuted into the City but stayed at Nik’s, and then a week in Melbourne. There is no need to reherse the various seminars, visits to tram depots and construction sites etc., but we did do a few very worthwhile touristic things which I’ll summarise here and include a few photos. A ... read more

Wednesday 9 Oct After a sustaining breakfast of Pete's cheese omelette, we were all packed ready to set off for Romsey. We will not be back to Pete and Moyra's in Leopold again. We took two cars as we were leaving the small vehicle with Julie and Mike and taking their big Toyota Prado, with a tow hitch for a caravan. They have lent us their 6 berth caravan for our 4 days camping at the artist's 'muster' in Echuca. Julie and Mike made us lunch again of rolls, chicken and salad followed by fruit. The two older girls were back at school but the boys made us little glasses of water each, as we arrived for a toast. It was our 48th wedding anniversary and one we will remember very clearly, as it was so ... read more

Spring sunshine and showers today, which is lovely for the garden. Between the showers Pete planted the Kangeroo Foot plant we bought them for their garden. This plant likes sandy soil so we had bought a bag of sand to lighten the soil. Another bonus was a visit by Nic, Elliot and Georgina. Elliot was interested in the Dove's nest with two eggs, we had spotted while working in the garden. Winks managed to finish photographing her Grandfather's amazing photograph album, with hand painted images of Rhodesia as it was in 1932 to 1945. He was quite an intrepid explorer and an excellent photographer. I have added a few photos below We walked to the Gateway Sanctuary while Elliot cycled on his bike, about two miles away. It is where Alan and Moyra did their painting. ... read more

Today was Moyra's actual birthday, so she had more presents from Pete at breakfast plus phone calls. Moyra and Alan went off to a lovely little church hall in Drysdale to a life drawing class for a couple of hours. Winks and Pete did some gardening and chores. Good to have time together Later in the afternoon Pete took Winks and Al to the 'Men's Shed' where Pete joins other retired blokes to do 'things'. The shed is well equipped for producing many repurposed items in wood, metal and other materials. It is a great place fo men to get together and chat, work on projects, garden or just hang out. On the way home we went to Bunnings Hardwear superstore in Leopold, which is huge and holds a massive variety of stock. We ought the ... read more
