GOR Day5 This is one of the days on this trip with some spectacular coastline. That is after we have breakfasted in the Alcove cafe, sung Happy Birthday to Kay, a young girl on our trip, and then mended Tony’s 2 punctures. The first detour down a rough track took us to the coast to see the most spectacular rock formations and caves which in my view to equal the 12 Apostles. The Loch Ard unfolded more scenes of delight and the Razorback island before we eventually arrived at the 12 Apostles, which now number 8 due to erosion and falling into the sea. The coastal rocks all have horizontal multi coloured strata exposed by wind and rain over hundreds and thousands of years. Quite amazing. Drinks and biscuits were available at the 12 Apostles visitor ... read more

GOR Day 4 The forecast is a bit cooler today with a temperature of 22 degrees. How will we survive? As it happened it turned out to be nearer 30 and Bill now has some serious tanning marks on his arms, and a rash on his legs, no doubt from the flies we encountered at the lookout points. First job today was to stock up with emergency rations in case cafes are a bit scarce on this journey. So to ’Coles’ we went in force. Now then. Did I mention the wind? The wind, the wind. The normal prevailing wind is a westerly. Can you guess which way it was blowing today? You have it in one - yes straight in our face. The first few miles were quite pleasant despite the heavy winds of 25 ... read more

Turning 50 in 2020, we wanted to have a really special holiday. Looking back, it was probably 18months ago that I started throwing ideas around of places I’d love to visit - Madagascar, Galapagos Islands or Antarctica. My love of photography, animals and nature were big factors when deciding where to travel to but price has to come into it, unfortunately. We ruled out Madagascar and Galapagos Islands because in 2015 we had the most amazing wildlife experience in Borneo and although not the same, decided to give these two a miss for this trip. Antarctica was a dream for both of us, but once we started doing the research, ruled this out too for several reasons which I won’t get into. Luckily, there was another destination which would offer not only spectacular scenery, wildlife and ... read more

GOR Day 3 What an exciting start to the day. Yesterday was spent fielding questions about the size of the bikes for the trailer which should have sounded alarm bells. The van and trailer duly arrived at 9.30am but with a minuscule trailer which only held 8 if the 12 bikes and the van with 14 seats in a circle with littl spare space. After much huffing and puffing we decided that one could go on the passenger seat, one in the back between our legs and two on the drawbar. The only problem was how to secure the drawbar bikes. The driver said he would get a rope from the petrol station - oh yes? I decided to go with him to make sure he did not return with an elastic band. As expected the ... read more

Great Ocean Road. 2020 Day 1. Here we are off on another adventure to the other end of the earth. Hopefully not into the bushfires which have been raging for two months now in Australia’s worst fire season in modern history. We are going to ride from Warrnambool east to Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road built by the First World War soldiers on their return and completed in 1935 using pick, shovel and hard graft. After a gruelling 22 hour flight and 28 hrs door to door and with dodgy sleep, if any, we arrive in Melbourne ready to build up our bicycles ready for a steady ride around the cycleways of the city on Friday the 7th of February. Please find me a bed to rest this weary body. I don’t care what time ... read more

When you visit Australia, it is said that you must do the three R's: the Reef, the Road, and the Rock (Great Barrier Reef, Great Ocean Road, and Ayers Rock, now known as Uluru). On this day, we did the Road. The Great Ocean Road stretches along the southern coast of Victoria roughly from Geelong to Warrnambool. For all but a short traverse in the Great Otway National Park, it follows right along the coast, offering stunning views of cliffs and sea. When we were here in 2003, there was an arch we photographed. Several years ago, the arch collapsed, stranding some visitors on the seaward end, requiring helicopter rescue. Smaller arches are still around. The other thing that has changed is we did not see kangaroos this trip. We saw several along the road previously. ... read more

For some time, we have been planning a protracted trip to Australia and New Zealand. Jennie and I came to Oz in 2003, but were unable to see some things, with only two weeks to tour around (one week of our trip was spent on a dive boat trip to the Coral Sea). We have never been to New Zealand. Since Chuck and Lucie had never been to either one, and given the length of the journey, we decided to spend an unprecedented 5 weeks seeing both countries as best we could in that time. We made some choices with an eye on the length of the trip. First, although we had wanted to visit the Ningaloo Reef to see whale sharks and see the oldest living things on Earth, the stromatolites of Shark Bay, we ... read more

We will be traversing through Sydney multiple times, and so we left after this short visit, headed westward to Melbourne and environs. Bit of a tough start to the morning with an early flight and late night before, but travel allows no shirking. The good thing is that we arrived in Melbourne in early morning and were thus able to make the drive to the Yarra Valley and the Healesville Animal Sanctuary. The Yarra Valley is a well-known wine region (think Napa), but after our visit to the animal sanctuary we drove back to town. There was a lot of traffic in the Valley because there is an outdoor venue there and Elton John was scheduled for that night. (The next day we found out that he had to be rushed for the stage for safety ... read more

Well The Times They Are A Changin' as Bob Dylan told us in 1964!! With Christmas 2018 spent in Copenhagen, Christmas 2019 saw us in Melbourne while Christmas 2020 saw us Home Alone in Sydney! Since I wrote a travelblog about our wonderful Copenhagen Christmas adventures I won't repeat them here. For Christmas 2019 Kev and I drove from Sydney to Melbourne, a journey of 880kms which we took two days to do with an overnight stay in Albury. Once in Melbourne we headed to Nic's place where we were staying. Meanwhile Andrea flew from Armidale, staying with Kerrii, Seb, Grace and Rupert and with the two apartments about a ten minute walk from each other it was easy for us all to go from one to the other. So on Christmas Eve we enjoyed a ... read more

After much discussion and looksees around the river, driving with brother Ron, we decided to take up niece Stephanie's suggestion of Little Toms Beach at Cobram. a proverbial stones throw from town. We drove through some dry dusty tracks through a river gum forest along the river until we came to Little Toms Beach. An idyllic classic Murray River setting nestled among towering river gums and dry scrubby bushland, with a sandy beach right at our door step. We found a safe level camp, free from large overhanging river gumtree branches but still catching some afternoon shade. We would be camping here for quite a few days, so we set up our full annexe to give us an extra room for some 5 star river camping. Once our camp was setup, we took a stroll around ... read more
