One thing I have realized this past week is that I am going to miss the Melbourne skies. I have attached pictures of the sunset and skies that I have taken over this past week. Now that it is staying lighter much later (as in til around 7:30 or 8), I have been much more observant of the setting sun each night. I have been blown away by sheer beauty of what I've seen. Some of you have even heard me talk about how amazing it is to look out my window most afternoons and see nothing but endless blue...there literally are no clouds. There have been days in my life where I have seen a sky with no clouds, but not on a regular basis like I do here....and the blue is the bluest blue ... read more

Hey everyone! Well, this week has been intense- stressful, emotional, sunny, and wonderful in it's own Australian way. Wednesday I had a test and it went pretty well, I think. We shall see this week when I get it back, but I think I did alright. Wednesday night after my night class, I came home to an email from the university president at Bellarmine with some heart-breaking news. The past few days have been tough. It's been tough to know that such a horrible thing happened at my home. It's been tough to know that my friends are hurting. It's been tough not being there. And it's been tough not having anyone to talk to about what is going on. At the end of the day, I know that I am stronger because of this. I ... read more

First let me apologize that it has been so long in between updates, but my hope is that all you with the email that came earlier this week were able to be satisfied for the week. I have to say that things are just getting crazier here by the minute and so updates will probably be fewer and further between over the next 6.5 weeks. This week went pretty normal...except just much less free time. I did give myself a break on Tuesday to go toss the frisbee with Theresa and Tom for a while. Also, yesterday, Theresa and I went to get a 50 cent cone from McDonalds. It's all about the little things these days. To say that I had a mini meltdown yesterday would be an accurate statement. I am pretty stressed out ... read more

Well, the title of the post tonight is inspired by an email that my grandfather sent me this past week. He was emailing to let me know how happy he is that I've had this opportunity and how I've made so much of it. As more people begin to send these emails, I come to the brutal realization that my time here is ending soon. As Lorie said to me in an email this week- it feels like you were just at the airport so nervous to be leaving. I agree, it does feel like I was just sitting in CVG crying because I had no clue what was ahead of me. I don't know if I ever talked about all the travel it took me to get here. I remember clear as day crying the ... read more

A few weeks ago, I filled out a survey on Myspace and one of the questions was when was the last time you hugged someone. At the time, my answer was July 24, 2007 when I hugged my parents goodbye at the airport. Today, that answer has changed. Earlier today I hugged my roommate Berrak goodbye as she got into Tim's dad's car and drove off to her new place of residence. That hug meant so much to me- my first hug in Australia. We got her a card that said something to the affect of, "Friends are the family you got to choose." When I moved in here 10 weeks ago, Berrak was the first one of my roommates that I met. I didn't understand a word of what she was saying and she didn't ... read more

Well, it's now very early in the morning on Sunday, but I'm not tired and I really have no desire to sleep at the moment. I think I last left off somtime toward the middle of the week and I must say the week rounded off with more of going to class and staying up late hanging out with my roommates. Friday, I did not have class, but I woke up to try and run some errands before it got to be too late in the day. My first stop was the STA Travel office and it got me off on a very bad foot! I walked in and sat down only to be told that they, "could do nothing for me." Then when I told them that when I bought my ticket through them back ... read more

Have you ever put a lot of work into something only to watch it turn out in an unpleasant way? Well, remember how I said that I was being so unlike myself by putting so much work into that paper that was due a few weeks ago? Well, I did put a lot of work into it. I had to do a lot of research and seek out answers I had no clue how to find as the paper related to Australian Governmental Policy- which I was clueless about. I got all my research done weeks before it was due, had an outline for the paper, wrote a draft, stepped away from it for a few days and then finished it the morning it was due. And what happens? I get a 68%. Granted, that equates ... read more

Well, today was a rather big day in Aussie land. It started off with my tutorial this morning where I got my test back from 2 weeks ago. I actually did really well and am quite proud. I got a 95% which at home would be normal for a student to get but here is a bit of a rare occassion apparently because the shock in my tutor's voice was a bit odd for me. The class average was like in the 60's so I'm really quite proud...especially considering how flustered/frustrated I got when taking it...good to know I was able to re-gain calmness and do well on the test. Then, I had my meeting with Tanya from Student Services here at Swinburne. It was quite an interesting exchange. I had emailed her questions beforehand and ... read more

Then, Sunday, my beloved birthday. We woke up in the early afternoon and we caught a really late lunch at Cafe FM (as in at 4 in the afternoon). I had never been there but it was awesome! We all had a macchiato and a sandwich! Then, when they told the guy that it was my birthday, he gave us all a free smoothie to go with our sandwiches, which was so cool! We came back to the apartment only to listen to more music and play some games. When I say games, I mean that we played volleyball with the balloons as the ball and the streamers across the room as the net. Well, I had been drinking to say the least and nailed my leg on the dinner table! Wowzers! It did not hurt ... read more
