Last weekend our plans to head down to Philip Island to ee the penguins fell through so we took the train the Royal Melbourne zoo instead! We weren’t sure if we really wanted to go because caged animals isn’t really our thing but we heard that a lot of the animals were rescued. It turned out to be a lovely day- the weather was glorious and I got to see koalas, kangaroos and a platypus! The bush area of the zoo is open plan so you can walk right up to the animals if they come near the path. I stroked a friendly roo, who was surprisingly soft and smooth! When the zoo shut we were going to head back home but someone mentioned that we could see the small penguins at St Kilda beach, which ... read more

Australia Day is a huge public holiday here- obviously, and I bought a top with an aussie flag! It was another boiling hot day so I made sure I had lots of suncream on! I managed to get tickets to the Astralian open, which was great :) I watched Sharapova play Kvitova in the womens semi finals in the rod laver arena- it was jam packed!!!! I found them training earlier in the day and got some close up shots!!! We stayed later to watch Nadal and Federer but the seats were sold out so we watched on the outdoor screen at the open! In the evening they interupted play for a fireworks display (they were almost as good as at New Year!) Last week I had a trial shift at a local cafe called Bread ... read more

So the weather has been a bit unpredictable hee (as is typical of Melbourne!) mostly sunny with a few days of cloud and even a bit of rain! (Apparently there was even hailstone on Christmas day!) My lovely friend Sal was in Melbourne so I met up with her at St Kilda (the less posh backpacker area) and we went to the beach, shopped and ate! It was really nice to have some quality girly time after living with boys for the last few weeks! I have to say the shopping is pretty poor here and quite expensive- as most things here are. I miss cheap shops like Primark and George!!! Matthew and I had some time off so we decided to do a bit of walkin around the city from St Kilda up to Port ... read more

So the flight over wasn't too bad- the food was great and the Emirates staff were very friendly and helpful. They kept bringing drinks and snacks round. Apart from the small child who kicked me from Manchester to Dubai, the journey was quite easy. I watched about 4 films and played lots of games. I slept a bit but it was difficult (normally i can sleep anywhere) because I was tired when it was daylight! When I arrived at about 8am Aussie time, I was exhausted! The task was staying awake all day! We moved into our new place that day so that kept me busy! I was in my element buying bedding and towels etc. lol! The house is cute! Long and narrow with a garden and decking at the back- we even have a ... read more

Hellooooo everyone! Long time no.. blog. Anyway, I thought I'd start this bad boy up again, considering I am once again traveling.. sort of. I'm actually really just living... in a different country. However, this country is surprisingly similar to the States, so don't expect any teeth to get knocked out while trying to ford a mighty river or any life altering revelations at the peak of a Laotian mountain. My highlights thus far have been fairly mundane to the average human being. To me, however, these highlights have been AWESOME! Outstanding moments include: purchasing, moving, and constructing a bed; getting my first casual employment placement; finding a house, moving into said house (see aforementioned construction of bed), and loving my housemates; and meeting lots of fun new people. While these things may seem boring to ... read more

Evening all! It’s been a really busy few weeks, and it’s time you heard about it: we moved into our new place; there was a party with three (three!) cakes; some English visitors came to town; and I got a little bit older. It’s all meant that Sport is Global (yes, I’m banging on about the sport blog again) has taken a break, but oh my goodness it’s back this week baby, with three (three!) entries, which you can find at the new abbreviated link (thanks Andy) here: Where we live Sarah and I now live with our friend (and bridesmaid) Jasmine in a two-bedroom flat in Hawthorn. In case you’re not au fait with Google Maps, that’s a suburb in Melbourne’s inner east, with Richmond to the west and Camberwell to the east. It’s a ... read more

I've written something just for you guys, because I really appreciate your time listening to me rant about careers, and, hopefully, supporting my new sport blog. I enjoyed writing it, and I want to write more travel/observational/fun stuff, so your ideas, requests and suggestions would be much appreciated. Before we start though, and I know, I'm so predictable, but please have a look at this week's two entries: www.sportisglobal.blogspot.com Thank you! Now you may proceed, to FIVE things about Australia - I think you'll find that's more than enough: Driving We drive on the left here, so it's basically the same and nice and easy to adjust, right? Right? Wrong! Where to start with life on the road in Melbourne? The famous trams, of course! No, I didn't know Melbourne was famous for trams either. They ... read more

Where is the time...gone in the blink of an eye!?-Billy Porter I have gotten really bad about updating this thing, but I've give it a whirl anyway. So this past week, I spent most of the early part of the week studying for my exam on Wednesday. The exam was interesting- set up very differently than the way we do things at Bellarmine, but I guess that's what happens when you have 300 people all taking one exam at the same time...welcome to a big school, Katie. The exam went okay- could have been better and it could have been worse. I think I did alright, which at this point is just going to have to be enough. Wednesday night was the first of the goodbyes as a bunch of us went into the city to ... read more
