After all the organising I am finally ready to leave. Thanks to Greta, Cindy, Gabby and our generous supplies I have collected about $2000 worth of much needed medical supplies and stock, including items such as tetanus vaccines for all of the Primates. I am feeling very lucky and cant wait to delivery it all to Tasikoki tomorrow. Hopefully all of these supplies will mean that my time at Tasikoki can be spent doing great things for the animals there. I am a little nervous about leaving Australia and entering Indonesia with these items but I have numerous copies of my export permit and letter to indonesia customs so everything should be fine! Yesterday was spent running all of those last minute errands. I changed $700 AUD to Indonesian Rupiah and that gave me 5.3 million ... read more

Liebe aufrechtgehende Europaer!

Modern transportation is a marvel. A mere hour in the sky and I arrived in Melbourne, Australia. It was a weekend trip from Thursday, October 30 to Monday, November 3. I had been looking forward to visiting Melbourne since I first flew to Australia. Since Melbourne is in the southern state of Victoria, I waited through winter so that the weather would be more inviting for my visit. The Spring racing carnival is an exciting time for many people. The biggest event is the Melbourne Cup, taking place November 1-4th. Ben and Ziva, friends from Sydney (xchange) came along and we went to the Flemington Racecourse on Saturday with a group of Australians we met. The races are all about fun, fashion, and drinking, and so that’s what we did. After being explained some horse betting ... read more

Happy Hallowe'en. It doesn't seem to be a big holiday here, we've seen almost no decorations. We did actually see a Santa this morning, and yesterday we saw the big Christmas tree. Yesterday as promised was a long day. Left the hotel at 8 am in the grey gloom (apparently Melbourne is known for having 4 seasons in a day and has the most rainy days of any Australian city), heading out on a city highlights tour. While I love bus tours of urban areas, it's really easy to lose your bearings on them. I have no idea where anything I saw yesterday is in relation to our hotel. Well, almost anything, I do know where the Victoria Market is (more on that later). We passed by the Old Melbourne Gaol on our way to our ... read more

Well, today's post title is inspired by one of my favorite books- Tuesdays with Morrie. I titled it as such, not that I think I'm nearly as amazing as Morrie, but because today was very insightful in much the same way that the book was for me when I read it. Let's first begin with yesterday, though. I woke up way earlier than I wanted to considering the state I was in when I went to bed Sunday night, but my body woke me up and there was no falling back to sleep! So, I got up and called my parents and then talked to Kristina and Kelly on Skype as it was still my birthday back in the States at this point! I had so much fun talking to X and Kels! So, I realized ... read more
