Great Ocean Road Travel Blogs

Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Ocean Road
At the start of the drive
The Great Ocean Road aboard our new home and transportation Beverly on its first drive we took it easy and only drove the 50km or so to Torquay all SEEMED well and we stopped and Nibby attempted Vietnamese noodle soup it was good but not quite like the real thing. Torquay is the only real town of any substance for the next 100-200km so we stopped to do some shopping Matty decided that the sea was way to cold to surf without a wetsuit so we picked up two in the sales before trucking off. Had a lovely walk along the [View Full Entry]

Great Ocean Road

Its time to move on from Melbourne and we picked up our 'Wicked' campervan in the cold and pouring rain. The van is called The Mystery Machine. And it sure lives up to its name - one year old, 130,000 kms on the clock, battered and dented its a mystery it still goes - still its our home for the next week So first stop Philip Island and a Koala Sanctuary; really nice and a great boardwalk so that we could get up close to the Koalas. Most were asleep in the branches, but one made a great effort to eat [View Full Entry]

Hi there, So we moved on to the Great Ocean Road, much to the delight of the kids. And I have to be honest and say it was really 'my thing' for Oz - my idea to do it. I say that as whilst it's very impressive, it meant being in the car for 3 days. And I didn't exactly get a standing ovation when I suggested it. Anyway we strapped DVD player to back of hire car - gave Shelley kate nash on Ipod and set off. At one rare moment when Bella actually paused her Nintendo DS, I told [View Full Entry]

The Great Ocean Road November 5, 2008 The cabin in Robe served us well and we had a pleasant breakfast in our cabin looking out over the ocean. First stop on our eastern route was Mt. Gambier where there are several volcano crater lakes and we took the lovely drive to the best one, Blue Lake. Joe and I have been so impressed throughout this trip at the thought put into visitor services at the attractions and parks. This route was especially beautiful and efficient. There were clouds overhead so the locals said Blue Lake wasn’t as blue as when it [View Full Entry]

Life on the road starts here, we headed across Melbourne to the depot and to start our new exciting leg. Our transport, our home and our adventure all round up in a battered 1994 van, with 300,000 miles on the clock and a dodgy paint job it was an adventure in it self. Victoria was our goal and the first call was The Great Ocean Road. With a quick stop off for supplies we were soon making our way west and out to Torquay. On Victoria’s Surfers coast, Torquay is a cool, hip town full of all the labels and some [View Full Entry]

We left Melbourne on Monday (now with the german guy) and headed further south to join the Great Ocean road. This is a 200km road which goes right along the cliff tops of the south australian coast and has some amazing sights. Because it's right next to the sea and because it's still early spring here, the weather was cooooold! We stopped off along the way to take in some of the amazing rock formations and as always, camped out in random fields and truck stop laybys. Along the way, we entertained outselves by attempting to teach eachother the 3 different [View Full Entry]

G'day Everyone! Hope you are all doing well and heading into a great change of season, whichever it might be :) This past week, I've just experienced my very own southern hemisphere "Spring Break '08!" Though it only lasted a week, it was a very busy and exciting time! We started our Spring Break celebrations a bit early, with our Roberts Hall Ball on Thursday night. The best way to describe this annual event would be to compare it to Prom, but with much less stress. Many of the departments at the university hold their own ball. For instance, during August [View Full Entry]

Great Ocean Road Wednesday the 3rd of October a gang of five set out on an adventure to The Great Ocean Road, this amazing stretch of road was constructed as a memory to those killed during The First World War - and what a monumental memorial it is! Our little group consisted of some of the most kick-ass people EVER: Eirik, Hardik, Martin Zena and myself (not quite as kick-ass, as the kick-assesestest...) We started out from The University Lodge in Macleod in Melbourne in one of the ugliest [View Full Entry]
