Great Ocean Road Travel Blogs

Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

stop off on the great ocean road..
..behind us was this huge cave!
G'day mate, We made a stop off in Warnambool after Robe so Rob could recover from driving a bit before hitting the great ocean road. It would take all day to drive because all the stop offs to look at the coast. Unfortunately, the one day we wanted good weather it was overcast, rainy and very windy, so stopping at the great rock formations that the GOR is famous for was a bit more challenging and not as fun in the rain and wind! They were quite impressive though. The 12 apostles (now 6) were the best sight. It took a [View Full Entry]

Along the Great Ocean Road
This was our first stop to see the great limestone formations.
From our camp at Port Fairy, we spend a wonderful day driving to the Twelve Apostles. There are 8 of these wonderful lime stone monuments left standing in the Great Southern Ocean. Very impressive were also the other lime stone formations on the way, especially the London Bridge that fell in 1990, the Loch Ard Gorge and the Grotto. Port Campbell is a great place to stop for lunch and also has a craft and rural market on Sundays. The drive on this part of the Great Ocean Road is much different than between Torquay and the Otways - you are [View Full Entry]

London Bridge - Great Ocen Road

Great Ocean Road

Slipping out of Melbourne for a day we decided to journey south along the "Great Ocean Road" to see what lay ahead. To start the blog off right however we should start 10-20 million years ago when there was a shallow sea that covered this part of the world (rock geek). Long story short, over millions of years numerous amounts of little sea critters died and became compacted to form the limestone cliffs you'll observe in the photos. Eventually the sea dried up which is more common than you think and the limestone rock became exposed. Of course the last 2 [View Full Entry]

On the 2/2 we picked up our 'Wicked' camper van. Wicked are a budget camper rental company that write obscenities on the sides of their vans, to make them more attractive supposedly (or draw unwanted attraction)! Ours was pretty tame - others I could not even repeat (parents viewing)! The van was basic (well tin can comes to mind) but met our needs and offered us the freedom we wanted to get from Melbourne to Adelaide. We collected the van in Melbourne and decided to stay for a couple of days to take in the sights. Melbourne is a beautiful city [View Full Entry]

From Melbourne we hired a car to go down the great ocean road and up the grampians before heading back to Melbourne. The bright spark at the rental place didnt think about it being a little bit illegal to drive an 8 seater if you are under 25! fortunately there only ended up being 5 of us. so after telling him "no a 3 door hatchback wont be big enough for 5 people plus backpacks!" we ended up with this monster of a mitsubishi! it was no looker but it had a 3.5litre V6 unber the bonnet so i wasnt compaining! We'd been told we HAD to the Great Ocean Road by loads of people we've met along our travels so we were really looking forward to it. It was about an hours drive from Port Fairy to the start and in this hour unfortunatly the weather started to deteriate- the nice white fluffy clouds started to look more like black rain clouds. One of the first stops was to see the bay of islands, this was our first glimpse of the amazing rock formations along this part of the road and it was stunning. The next stop was at London [View Full Entry]

The 12 Apostles

Tues 4th Dec: We planned to leave by 0800 but as I didn't wake until 0745 it was nearer 0900. We stopped for fuel and also empties the jerry can we'd carried through the outback. Got to the roundabout at the end of the road and went around it. Why am I telling you all this? Because as I went around it I heard Hayley scream from the back seat and turned to see the other passenger door open and my rucksack go flying into the road!!!! I pulled up onto the roundabout and Laz jumped out and retrieved it, my [View Full Entry]

The Arch
So after the breathtaking scenery of yesterday we studied the book good and hard and decided what we wanted to see today. We had nearly gone the length and decided that we would see a few more bits and then head back cross country to Melbourne. Back on the road and the first stop was the 'Arch' a feat of nature where the sea has carved out a hole in the rock that you can see through.... it was amazing and the colours of the rock really helped its beauty - but the flies..... oh my God the flies...... you can [View Full Entry]

A surfer braving the water at the famous Bells Beach
So in our wisdom from the lovely UK we had decided that we were going to do the Great Ocean Road Drive. This incorporates a drive along the south coast of Victoria and provides travellers with the most amazing scenery in the world. We had not booked any accommodation as we were not sure how far we were going to go (one way is nearly 400kms) We collected our rent a car and set off - I was designated driver and Woody managed to do a great Tom Tom impression and get us out of the City and on the way [View Full Entry]

We picked up our hire car from Melbourne and began our journey to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road. Our first stop was Geelong where we visited the marina and took some photos of some weird post things!! We then went to Torquay and Lorne which are famous for surfing and where surf labels such as Billabong and Rip Curl were started. They were beautiful beaches but packed as it is the Australian summer holidays at the moment. We then drove onto Apollo bay where we were staying for the evening. We went up to Mariner's lookout which had an excellent [View Full Entry]
