Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

So having spent a week with my cousins in Sydney (I'll write about Sydney in another blog), I decided I would take a flight to Melbourne - frequently voted the 2nd best city in the world to live from a quality of life perspective and it's easy to see why when it has churned out some of life's greats such as Mrs. Mangel, Harold Bishop and Helen Daniels. Don't pretend you don't know what/who I'm talking about. I know most of you would also have been glued to the television at 5:35 each evening to find out the latest gossip from [View Full Entry]

on the Great Ocean Road - what a view!
Well summer is over, the weather is noticeably cooler, and we have lost our long evenings with the end of daylight saving. On the other hand, the leaves are all turning yellow and red, the grass is finally becoming green again, and autumn is a nice time of year to be in this part of Australia. Back in Melbourne, we got the Landcruiser damage assessed - rather surprised to find it would take over a week to repair!- so we decided to make the most of our extra time in Melbourne, and the rental car provided as part of our insurance. With Brett back in town, we decided to leave TP and her roomies for a few days and drive the Great Ocean Road on the South Eastern coast. The road starts just passed Torquay, and winds along the coast and through rainforests for 273km's to Warrnambool. The road was originally built by 3000 returned servicemen as a war memorial for their fellow servicemen who had been killied in the First World War. The actual construction of the road took place between 1919 and 1932, with many updates since then. Most of the road hugs the coast pretty tightly offering amazing views [View Full Entry]

So, Jenna and I took a trip to Melbourne and The Great Ocean Road. It was amazing!!! First, our flight left really early so we had to get up at 4:00am and when we got to Melbourne it was 7:30am. We picked up our sweet rental car and headed off for the great ocean road. It was amazing! So Beautiful! Some of the best places were 12 apostles, the grotto, the blowhole and random beaches. Then, we spent the night in a hostel in Warrnambool. In Warnambool we found a really great café that had the best fried food (which we [View Full Entry]

Drove along the great Ocean road over 2 days, althought the weather was crappy, it was still worth while to drive along it on our way to Melbourne. Throuhg the drive we came across an Irish village called Koroit which has alot of Irish settlers from the 1800's, the village was decorated in Green due to an Irish festival the week previous to us coming pity we missed. Along the drive we go by the 12apostles and loads of other cliff on the way. [View Full Entry]

On the great Ocean Road !! 1st day We left Melbourne yesterday morning towards first Geelong then off to the Great Ocean Road. In Geelong we went to an Aboriginal Cultural center in order to try some boomerang throwings (without much success). After that we went 'till Torquay to see the Bells Beach and discover the surfing museum there. The great ocean road actually starts in Torquay and from then on we had a very nice time driving !The coast is superb !!! We did some stops along the way to admire scenery and at Teddy's lookout in Lorn we even [View Full Entry]

Day 295 (16.1.08) Before we settled down into trying to find jobs and a flat we wanted to make a trip down the Great Ocean Road. But before we were to get ourselves together we were accompanying Tiana to the jetty at St Kilda beach to help her with the penguin research she’s doing for her PhD. Waking like overexcited kids on a day trip, we got up and put on our jumpers and coats (well it was pretty early and cold). Tiana picked us up and we made our way to the beach parking near the jetty. Tiana opened the [View Full Entry]

Kello heratti viidelta ja pikkubussi haki minut seitsemalta Great Ocean Roadin paivamatkalle. Olin ensimmainen matkustaja, ja otin eturivin paikan kuskin vieresta. Ensimmainen tunti kului siina kun haettiin muut 12 matkustajaa ympari Melbournea. Aamuruuhka alkoi jo tuntua. Sitten paastiin moottoritielle.
