Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Die Reise nach...
Die Reise nach...
...eher von Melbourne nach Adelaide
Auch wenn ich eine Menge zu erledigen habe, kann ich es kaum erwarten euch endlich von dem "Great Ocean Road-Trip" zu erzählen. Also dann... Jedenfalls angekommen in Melbourne ha [View Full Entry]

Hey Everyone, Apologies for not writing sooner. We have been on the road driving the Great Ocean Road these past few days. We decided not to hang around in Melbourne long so rented a car and left on Tuesday. Before leaving, we went to a comedy show on Monday night and had the most random night so far.... After watching a comedian named Mark Butler we planned to go to anothe pub which hosted a Neighbours Night... unfortunately for us... we did not take down its address and couldn't find it. Eventually we came back to the pub we saw the [View Full Entry]

Hi! I've been putting this off because there is so much to say! After our wine tour, we stayed in the city in a hostel for the night and got up super early to go on our 3 day Great Ocean Road/Grampians tour. Our tour guide, Bernie, picked us up in the city around 7:30am. Once everyone was picked up, I realized we had a mini United Nations in our little bus. 3 Americans, 2 Brits, 2 Polish, 2 Spanish, 2 Japanese, 2 Filipino, 1 Italian, 2 Germans....I think that's it. It was a very mixed group. All of us were [View Full Entry]

Arriving in Melbourne from Sydney on the early flight left us pretty tired. We also made the mistake of flying into Avalon airport instead of Melbourne Tullamarine airport. (Avalon is approximately 60kms outside Melbourne so more like a regional airport). Anyway, 3 hours later & $100 worse off from getting a transfer (2 buses & a taxi) to our campervan, we accepted the camper (named Mutlety!). We set off towards the Great Ocean Road west of Melbs. The drive took us to Warrnambool & Port Fairy, small towns at the start of the far end of the Great Ocean Road. This [View Full Entry]

For those unaware, after I got back from New York in October, I decided to go back to Australia for 6-7 months to work as I have a work Visa until Aug 08. Arrived in Sydney few weeks after my decision, and have been working out here and living near Darling Harbour for the last few months.... For the Easter Break, I with a couple of friends travelled the Great Ocean Road in Victoria (near Melbourne). Claire (English friend met at work) and I flew from Sydney to Melbourne on the Wed night before Easter weekend, staying overnight before meeting up [View Full Entry]

15-17/3 3 day trip from Adelaide to Melbourne via the Grampians and Great Ocean Road with Groovy Grapes. Driver Tash. White kangaroos - we saw them at a kangaroosanctuary near the border between South Australia and Victoria. Grampians - like the Blue Mountains, but drier and more ground down. Reids lookout with view of the valleys. Mackenzie Falls. In the morning of day 2 a 2 hour walk to the top of the Pinnacles, with view of the Grampians and the surrounding farmlands. We were overtaken by an old man who took a rute that was twice as long as ours, [View Full Entry]

Great Ocean Walk (15th-21st March, 2008) Picking up from where I left off last time...Rupesh returned to London in mid January. I did some locum work for the next couple of months at Royal Talbot Rehab, Nepean Rehab and Donvale Rehab Hospitals. After a fantastic long, hot summer at home I was almost ready to head back to London. A couple of weeks before I left I did parts of the Great Ocean Walk with Kendra and Spike. The Great Ocean Walk track between Apollo Bay and Glenample Homestead near the 12 Apostles offically opened a little over 2 years ago. [View Full Entry]

While staying at Nomands We ranged with George and Alex to hire a car and take a road trip down the Great Ocean Road...originally this was a 3 day trip then turned into a week camping! Another lad, tom joined us making the trip bit cheaper! We managed to hire a station wagon at $33 a day, wasnt the greatest car in the world as you can see in the photos but brought some laughs and did the job! We left at 5 on friday and managed to arrive in Adelaide in 3 in the morning with no where to stay!!! [View Full Entry]

We hired a 4wd Subaru Forrester (which was dad's Impreza) to begin our road trip on the Great Ocean Road. The first part of the road is called the 'surf coast' stretching from Torquay to Lorne where we watched some of the country's best surfing taking place on seemingly endless beaches. Our first 2 night stop was at the lovely Lorne where we were lucky enough to stay in a great log cabin in the middle of the eucalyptus tree forrest. we were surrounded by local wildlife including cockatoo's and Lorikeets which came to feed on our balcony and enjoyed biting [View Full Entry]
