Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

I'm now in Melbourne and finished the first talk today at University of Melbourne - two more to go. However, I had an amazing weekend hanging out with Bruce's mom and brother (and his mom's friend). They were a hoot! We saw some amazing sights along the Great Ocean Road and I took way too many photos. There were so many awesome views of the ocean, the cliffs, the rock formations and the wildlife to capture. I took the train out to Geelong on Saturday morning and they picked me up from the train station and we headed to Port Campbell [View Full Entry]

13th August 2008 - Great Ocean Road We got picked up in a mini van from our hostel early in the morning for our day tour. Our first stop was Bells Beach which is a very famous surfing beach in the summer as the waves are collosal! We also had a quick stop at the lighthouse that was used in the kids tv programme Round The Twist - anyone remember that! I used to watch it loads! We had lunch in a picnic area where there were lots of birds - they landed on everyone! I did squeal when the [View Full Entry]

Right well we're on day two of our six day road trip and both of us can now say we've driven an automatic car and driven in Australia (although I only drove around a car park!). At the minute we're in a place called Apollo Bay which is on the Great Ocean Raod. It's very quiet but really chilled and the veiws are AMAZING! We're also just on the beach so we've had an ickle walk along the golden sands. I was REALLY freaked out about driving out of Melbourne but it wasn't so bad in the end and Ben seemed [View Full Entry]

I have just returned from the most fantastic day travelling along the Great Ocean Road with 12 other backpackers in a minivan. Although initially the trip down the Great Ocean Road seemed expensive ($95AUD) it was worth every penny. We left in the early hours of the morning for a long drive out of Melbourne and onto the Great Ocean Road. This little backpacker trip through Bunyip Tours was very well organised and we visited some fantastic little spots along the way. Our first stop was at the world famous Bells Beach renowned for its surfing and appearance in the end [View Full Entry]

Well I think Mrs. Verge would be proud... actually, Mr. Séguin would be proud, as he knows how much trouble I went through in high school trying to decipher Shakespeare!! He definitely had to lead me by the hand on all the ones we read... but either way! I got the opportunity on Wednesday night to go see Hamlet at the Arts Centre in Melbourne. The production was put together by the Bell Shakespeare company from Australia and had been playing at the Sydney Opera House when I was there, but I had not been able to go (which is really [View Full Entry]

So, lets start this blog with a confession, many of you reading this who know me well will not be surprised by what I have to say. I am a big muppet, huge, enormous and incredibly dumb!! I was meant to go on a 3 day tour of the Great Ocean Road on Saturday. This would have taken me from Melbourne to Adelaide via numerous tourist attractions and sights. But me being me I managed to mess this up. Yep I went to the wrong pick up point at the wrong time and totally missed the tour. They had told me [View Full Entry]

During our time in Melbourne there were 2 big trips we wanted to do, Philip Island and the Great Ocean Road. After leaving everything until the last minute in Perth we decide to get organised earlier this time. First was a trip to Phillip Island, we decided to book a day tour for this one. We started out early on a Saturday morning, it was a small group with just ourselves, one English guy and 5 Japanese and our guide was a Kiwi. Our guide was a little odd, he got very stressed with the traffic getting out of Melbourne and [View Full Entry]

After a looooonnnnggggg bus ride to Melbourne, complete with the strangest bus driver (and probably the strangest man) I have ever come across (lots of sneezing, burping, and many received phone calls announced by "Dancing Queen" at full blast) we made it to Melbourne. It was late when we arrived so didn't really see much of the city. Next day we had a day of organising, and ended up arranging to go out on the Great Ocean Road the very next day. How exciting! We were up early to collect our hire car, and after pottering around Melbourne for an hour [View Full Entry]

The shipping had gone and we'd handed back the apartment - so we left Canberra and headed to Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road for our last few days in Australia, joined by Peter and Cristiana. It was a great last few days - beautiful coastal views and surf, and a very inquisitive koala somewhere near Apollo Bay. And finally Russ and Kate's wedding day, amongst the vines of the Yarra Valley. The sun went down on a beautiful (if very cold!) afternoon and we danced the night away at Helen's Hill Winery - as Russ sang Blue and Waltzing Matilda [View Full Entry]

Great Ocean Road I had hired a car for my days in Melbourne and went straight to the Great Ocean Road. What a fantastic day of driving along this coastal highway. Even though the weather wasn't the best, the scenery was absolutely stunning. I drove all the way to Warmambool, where it started getting dark so I stayed for the night before heading back the same way the day afterwards. The next night was spent in Torquay, the surf capital of Australia, so I obviously had to try it out and hire a board. Lots of fun and actually managed to [View Full Entry]
