Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

I want to begin by saying this trip was one of the most interesting few days I've had since I've been here. Also when looking at the pictures that I'm about to explain you need to understand they don't catch the true beauty that is Australia. My weekend began when I got on the tiny bus of 20 passengers...mostly consisting of backpackers. The nationalities of the people were mostly german along with a few english, french and dutch and of course 1 american. So the journey began by taking a ride towards Bells Beach. Bells beach is a very popular surfing [View Full Entry]

We woke up early today as we wanted to go to the forest walk before it was too hot. We drove up to Lavers Hill then turned right toward Beech Forest. The drive there was down many windy roads but through the Great Otway National Park, a different part of the Great ocean Road. The trees are so big! The walk we were doing is next to the Highest Tree Top walk in the world ( according to the girl from the Information desk! ) but as we had done the one in WA we gave it amiss. The walk to [View Full Entry]

Set off around 9.30am in our huge car! We got an upgrade as they had run out of the little eco ones and had a very expensive looking thing and it was an automatic! The views are really spectacular along the road, we stopped at Wye River, we were told the fish and chips here are really good but the restaurant wasn't yet open :-(. We walked around and found the Fireman's fete! we bought a couple of homemade donuts! Then we stopped at Cape Patton, this is where the wild koala's are, but as we pulled over a Police car [View Full Entry]

Our last blog from Australia! In the last two weeks in the land of Oz, I had to drag Ben along to the Neighbours Tour in Melbourne. I felt I owed it to my inner 12 year old, to go and see the infamous Ramsay Street whilst we were in Melbourne. We had a tour of the studios where they film, and all the sets like Lou Carpenter's Mechanics etc, then we saw the school where the outside view is used for Erinsborough High. Then we went to Ramsay Street, which is a normal residential street, where normal people live their [View Full Entry]

After being seduced by the delights of the city I persuaded B that it would be a nice idea to take a 'road trip'. Amazingly, I succeeded, helped, it must be said, by a couple of 'Melbourne Ladies' that we struck up conversation with over a glass of wine and lunch at the Botanical Gardens. So we rented a car and off we set to Geelong to drive the Great Ocean Road. Someone close to me ;)) should be aware, and very probably is, that this is done every year on bicycles. I hope he t [View Full Entry]

We spent all day on Sunday on a day trip along the Great Ocean Road. We were picked up from our hotel and then made our way to the start of the Great Ocean Road. We made several stops along the day. First it was to the famous Bells Beach (surf beach). We had lunch in Apollo Bay, called off to see wild koalas and a walk through Maits Rain Forest. We then called off to see the 12 Apostles, Loch Aird Gorge and London Bridge. Several photos were taken throughout the day!!! We then called into Colac on the way [View Full Entry]

The Great Ocean Road is one of those sights that people will scold you for not visiting if you come home without that particular experience. Stretching barely 400km, it is one of the most beautiful scenic highways in the world, and definitely one of the most beautiful parts of Australia. The best way to do it, really, is to hire a camper van with some friends and drive from Melbourne to Adelaide, stopping and sleeping wherever you like along the way. Unfortunately for me, all my friends did the Great Ocean Road while I went to Tasmania so I left on [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone After 6 days in the Grampians, exploring most of the area, and doing most of the walks /climbs including the Pinnacle, the highest peak of the Grampians, we drove down to Ballaret for 2 nights, and got our fill of Australian history. We visited the Eureka and Gold Museums and also spent a whole day at Sovereign Hill, an excellent living museum representing Ballarat's 1st 10 years following the discovery of gold in 1851, set outdoors on 25 hectares on an early goldmining site. There were working exhibits including wagon wheel making demonstrations, pill making at the pharmacy, gold [View Full Entry]

En se réveillant ce matin la météo avait changé - de gros nuages et beaucoup plus frais. C’était dommage car on devait se rendre jusqu’à Melbourne aujourd’hui, via « The Great Ocean Road ».

But first a bit of history for you all, The Great Ocean Road is about 400km long starting just south of Melbourne and finishes in Warrnambool, It's Oz's most spectacular road and perhaps (depending on who you ask) one of the best if not the best drive in the world.
