Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

...i dont get it, you always hear about aussies being big drinkers and all that but; A) Its a real struggle to find a decent lager B) All lager is really expensive everywhere, in the pubs, offies, local shops etc, not a deal to be found! C) A lot of the beer is pale ale! im not a fan D) A 'pint' is blatantly not a pint, and is in fact about 2/3 the size, whats that all about??! E) On a hot day, the beer is not even cold enough so you have to drink it quickly, which wouldnt be [View Full Entry]

Well well well, im here! After a 26 hour flight, which seemed like it would never end i got here to be greeted by a very dark and tanned sara... and no bag! yes, my bag was not on the carousel, after waiting around for 10 minutes or so after everybody else had disappeared it became obvious that my rucksack had not travelled. After a quick visit to the qantas desk all was sorted, and two hours later my bag was delivered to my accomodation by some crazy south american 'ey gringo wana buy a donkey' looking chap, sporting a [View Full Entry]

great ocean road

This was at the top of the first king of the mountain sprint for stage 3.
For the last week ADam and I were following the Tour Down Under up, around, and through Adelaide and its surrounding areas. First, we hit the historic town of Handorff. When I see the word 'historic' used to describe a town I always feel a bit leary. I find that historic usually tranlslates to overpriced and tourist trap. Well, Handorff wasn't so bad for a 'historic' town. We walked through the small German settlement and saw some nice sausage and chocolate and outdoor bars. The day's race started there and the highlight had to be being right next to famous cycling [View Full Entry]

The Trip so far................... the holiday is over, Pris back from the garage with a clean bill of health, time on the beach soaking up the rays is done for another day, it's back to the traveling and planning the rest of our trip around and through Australia! We have the wheels, all we need now is the map. We bought the map, now we are ready! Laying the map of Australia down which covers half the bed, we start to plan, only then do we begin to realise just how big Oz is, here's a clue, you can fit 32 [View Full Entry]

Taking the greyhound bus from Sydney on a journey that lasted 23 hours, we arrived in Adelaide and booked into our impressive YHA hostel in Waymouth St. At last, kitchen facilities to allow us to put our culinary skills to use. Baked potato with cheese n beans it was then. We did not know what to expect of Adelaide. We did not undertake any research and in our ignorance thought it was probably going to be some little town with not much going on. How wrong we were! On our first day there we took a tram to Glenelg Beach. Very [View Full Entry]

We crossed the border into South Australia which at first didn't really look any different from the road. The first town was called Coober Pedy which is an old (and still current) opal mining town. As you approach it you see all the devistation the dynamite blasts have caused to the landscape and it feels really strange after being in the midddle of the bush for so long! Lots of the town itself is under ground as it gets ferrociously hot, up to 50 degrees so they dig out houses, churches, golf courses, hotels etc under the earth to keep cool. [View Full Entry]
