Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Yesterday we spent in Adelaide. When we looked out our window in the morning all we could see were acres of a green tarp roof with two holes cut in the middle out of which huge Norfolk Pines were growing. It turned out to be a holding lot for cars that had been shipped there. And the tarp was protecting them from sea spray, hail, and bird poop. Baxter could have taken a lesson from whoever built that lot: not every tree must come down! The huge Damond Princess was also in port in front of us. We looked like its [View Full Entry]

South Australia's license plate reads: 'The Festival State,' which it would seem is right on the money. Summer here is awash with festivals, events, street parties and sporting events, including the jewel in the city’s crown the Clipsal 500 (V8 Supercars racing through the Adelaide CBD). Carissa and I have enjoyed finding ourselves smack bang in the middle of it all and are sad to be leaving this vibrant part of the world. Despite some soaring temperatures, we have managed to get around and see a lot of Adelaide and its surrounds, including the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and Glenelg&rsquo [View Full Entry]

Just a short one im afraid, i had wrote up a full blog of the last few days(which havent been very eventful- more waiting for my card!) but mid-type, the page went back a screen and when i returned to my page it was blank! Ive lost my shakespearian flair now so am going to keep it brief.(If you want more, check out sara huntbach's blog as that tells you the lot, but is not as funny or detailed, or interesting) Basicly, my card didnt come after waiting two weeks for it so i phoned them up cancelled it and got [View Full Entry]

Back on mainland Australia we reluctantly said our goodbyes to Justin after a last tequila fuelled bender with him and prepared ourselves for a nice life of quiet sobriety over in Henley Beach with our mate Lee. Yeah right! Anyway, thanks to Lee we experienced our first bit of luxury in a while, having run of his house rather than having to hostel it. What bliss! Henley is a lovely little seaside place, with great bars on the waterfront and a relaxed vibe . . and yet another beautiful beach. Talking of said beach, one day whilst heading to catch a [View Full Entry]

Well the flight over from Singapore was pretty awful really.. cattle class but we had the same crew that came with us from London... we'd arrived pretty early here so we just left our bags at the hotel and ventured out into the city to find breakfast... we stumbled on the botanical gardens in the centre and had a lovely walk through... After that we wandered around the shops and came upon a hat shop that sells the famous Aussie hat, Akubra hats. Nick bought one of course!! He now strutts around just like an Aussie and even putting on a [View Full Entry]

So today, we did venture back up to the adelaide hills to the cleland wildlife park to try and see some genuine australian animals as previous attempts had been pretty uneventful. After a slow start to the day we rocked up at the park at about 12 noon and paid the necessary 14 bucks each to enter. The layout was 35 hectares of open land and wooded areas where the animals could roam about, and within that area there were some enclosure for other creatures that were either dangerous, or could escape from the park un-noticed. The first thing we came [View Full Entry]

Hi all, hope all is well. Right, where do i start?! been quite busy the last few days and everything seems to merge together a bit. I'll start where i left off then, good idea... Well we did go to the british pub that night and it was rubbish. Nothing resembled it being 'british' apart from 2 or 3 drunken irish blokes being loud, and even they had tans, not like any you would find in britain; and whats worse is that the beer was again expensive. A pint of becks(of all pints) was $9, or 4.50GBP to you and me! [View Full Entry]

One of my favourite views towards Manly from the stairs to the pool.
I didn’t expect to be starting out this blog entry on such a tragic note but given the events of last weekend, it’s hard to think of anything else. The bush fires in Victoria have devastated families, businesses and whole towns - a complete tragedy. It’s something not many people can comprehend, even if you are Australian, but it’s hard to compare it to anything I’ve experienced. I’m sure the international news is covering the more sensational stories but please send your thoughts, energy and, if possible, your help this way. These people have nothing. [View Full Entry]
