Day 4 (29/8/2016) Went to Westfield Marion Shopping Centre which we have not seen for a few years. The place certainly has changed & major upgrades have taken place. Decided to have lunch while there & suggested to Deb King George Whiting & Prawns. Deb’s eyes lit up, so the answer was obvious as KGW is her favourite fish. Needless to say it was absolutely delicious! From there it was off to see Deb’s friend Mandy. We spent several hours there before having dinner at Imperial Palace at O’Halloran Hill. The food was sensational & from there we headed back to the van for a good nights sleep. Day 5 (30/8/2016) Deb headed off into the city for lunch with her friend since childhood, also named Deb. Bob stayed at the van for a day of ... read more

Day 1 (26/8/2016) Got up at 3:45am, departed home at 4:20am. Left early to avoid any potential traffic & get a good head start. Got near Ballarat to rain & heavy fog that reduced visibility to about 200m. Slowed down to suit the conditions until we passed out the other side of Ballarat where the fog vanished. It was like travelling through some sort of strange time warp on a distant planet. No wonder they say Ballarat is another world! Arrived at Ararat at 8:20 am, stopping for breakfast & to have a break to read the paper. Resumed travel, arriving at Horsham at 9:25am. Filled up with diesel @ $1.18.9, having travelled 344km @ 8.9L/100km. Fill up took 46.9L. Back on the road again, taking our time & monitoring the new Diesel Engine Scanner from ... read more

Geo: -34.9258, 138.6Saturday and it's RACEDAY. Macca's office is closed but it doesn't mean that we can't still enjoy a bit of giddy-up at the track.Lucky we made it though because these wearied travellers did not stir until after 9 am! What a sleep in. Think Mac will revert to his old habits as soon as we get home! And the late start is not the only difference, Breakfast was minimalist. I managed to find an apple on the run and Mac called in to Hudsons Coffee for a flat white and a muffin. But we were out and about and looking for the tram around midday. Stopped off at Haigh's chocolate shop and indulged in a carefully selected purchase of 6 little squares that set us back $13.20! Must be top shelf!Secured an all day tram ... read more

Geo: -34.9258, 138.6Clickety clack, clickety clack, the gentle rhythm of The Ghan had us beat and we missed the sunrise completely this morning and woke to sunshine streaming in the window as lakes and green farm fields whipped by the trainA totally different landscape as we approach Adelaide and we actually saw people and homes, roads and railway crossings. Wouldn't want to be queued up waiting for The Ghan though, so many carriages and sometimes travelling at a snail's pace.Brunch was a leisurely affair and Mac opted for the works again but I settled for a salmon frittata. Another winner....and another one I am going to try in our kitchen. The rest of the morning was enjoyed back in the room marvelling at the views from the window. Watched the ocean roll in at Port Augusta, saw ... read more

I woke up feeling like I had a massive hang over except my whole body ached. I new something was seriously wrong as I have rarely been this sick on the road and the symptoms were pointing to Dengue Fever. I had been so careful in using my repellant but the mosquitos have been particularly bad. I decided that my best option was to check into a more expensive and comfortable hotel and to summon a doctor, the doctor confirmed Dengue and hotel staff went and filled the script. The last two days I have hardly left my room, I am beginning to feel a little better, the ache is just in my head now and rash that covered my whole body is probably a little less severe I am not looking forward to the three ... read more

Geo: -34.9802, 138.518It's a 5am rise and then off to the new Qantas business lounge for breakfast.Arrived safely at 2.30pm, Adelaide being 2.5 hours ahead of Perth. Checked into the Oaks on Glenelg beach with ocean views. Chloe & Joshua manage to get stuck in the fire stairs and have to go to basement and walk all the way back around hotel to get back in. It's a beautiful sunny 33c. The girls go to the beach, the boys the gym for a quick workout. We then plan to get the tram into the CBD to have a look around. We caught the tram and arrived 45 minutes later, having forgotten it's Sunday and 5pm. Everything and I mean everything is shut! Oh well back to Glenelg after a nice long walk. The evening found us in search ... read more

It’s said you take your mate to a test match but you drag your kids to a 20/20 extravaganza. There’s plenty of rationale behind the ethos. Try keeping a 10 year olds focus for 6 hours over 5 consecutive days – good luck. But, a 3 hour wham bam thank you mam slug fest festooned with fireworks, dancing girls jiving to boom boom music and you have the recipe for a sporting family night out. I’m a tad shy on offspring so I filled the void with a wife whose sporting tastes really do need a few bells and whistles thrown into the equation. Finding ourselves in Adelaide on New Year’s Eve and with 2 free tickets (thanks ever so much Rachel) to an otherwise sold out Big Bash match on the agenda at Adelaide Oval, ... read more

I got up early this morning to head up to the Laundromat to dry the towels and sheets and timed it so that when I left I would be at the airport about 15 minutes after their arrival, allowing time for baggage and customs. Well low and behold they texted me that they were ready for pick up just as I pulled up to the airport. I got out and was SO happy to see them and Alex. They weren’t hungry so we just headed to my place. We dropped off the luggage, gave them a tour of the place and then decided to go for another drive. I took them through McLaren Vale to the school to show them where I worked, up the Willunga Hill and then on to Aldinga to show them the ... read more

We stayed in Adelaide twice. The first time was initially scheduled to be a two night stay at the Mansions on Pulteney Apartments but our poor planning reduced it to one night on 21.11.15. We arrived at 6.35 am following the bus journey from hell and I promptly went straight to bed. The steep descent into Adelaide was quite spectacular. The city seems to sit in a bowl, with the sea on one side and hills on the other three. It looked really pretty in the early morning sunshine and I was immediately taken with it. We got a taxi to the Mansions, which was apparently built in the 1910s and it sits next door to a church. (Just as a by-the-by, Australia has LOTS of churches. They are not particularly well used in this day ... read more

Now, you wouldn't normally think a bus journey would warrant a mention of its own; normally, neither would I, but .... The bus service between Melbourne and Adelaide is operated by Firefly. We booked our tickets through Greyhound and couldn't quite figure out why they didn't do the route themselves as they seemed to go everywhere else in Australia but they reassured us that the Firefly buses were just as good if not, perhaps, slightly better as it would be possible for us to watch films on the Firefly bus. Jolly good. As we arrived to board the bus the driver, Emil, had us form an orderly queue and produce the relevant paperwork (the Greyhound drivers were much more relaxed and welcoming). One by one we were permitted to approach him for his scrutiny and our ... read more
