Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

DAY 144 The morning was wonderfully warm, and its was again a pleasure to be getting out of bed, the morning sun shone through the mozzy nets, which haven’t been open for so long as the weather in Tasmania and later on Kangaroo island had been cold, Adelaide in Autumn is just beautiful. Do we feel like we are on holiday, or do we feel like we are on holiday? Yes, that holiday spirit is back with the warm weather and of course getting out of bed is easier. It is hard not to feel the holiday atmosphere at the Big4, [View Full Entry]

We boarded our plane at Singapore airport and sat down for a ten hour flight to Adelaide. The captain made an announcement to say that the current temperature at our destination was 31C, nice, we thought. However the captain then continued to state that the current time in Adelaide was 1am, not nice. He confirmed the predicted temperature for the day was mid 40's, very bad. So we arrived on the hottest day in Adelaide for 80 years, a thermometer shattering 45.7C (for all you oldies thats about 116F!) - either way, v v v v v hot. Luckily we were [View Full Entry]

Let it be known to one and all that South Australia is the only state in Oz that was settled initially by free immigrants. No convicts were shipped to SA to start colony. Nope, it was the immigrants/migrants (which word is more appropriate here?) who wanted to set up a new life for themselves in Australia who started SA. Eventually freed convicts made their way to the settlements, but initially all the work was done by people who chose to make the move. Another random fact is that South Australia is the driest state in the driest continent in the world. [View Full Entry]

Yesterday we spent in Adelaide. When we looked out our window in the morning all we could see were acres of a green tarp roof with two holes cut in the middle out of which huge Norfolk Pines were growing. It turned out to be a holding lot for cars that had been shipped there. And the tarp was protecting them from sea spray, hail, and bird poop. Baxter could have taken a lesson from whoever built that lot: not every tree must come down! The huge Damond Princess was also in port in front of us. We looked like its [View Full Entry]

South Australia's license plate reads: 'The Festival State,' which it would seem is right on the money. Summer here is awash with festivals, events, street parties and sporting events, including the jewel in the city’s crown the Clipsal 500 (V8 Supercars racing through the Adelaide CBD). Carissa and I have enjoyed finding ourselves smack bang in the middle of it all and are sad to be leaving this vibrant part of the world. Despite some soaring temperatures, we have managed to get around and see a lot of Adelaide and its surrounds, including the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and Glenelg&rsquo [View Full Entry]
