Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

After my journey on the train, I arrived in Adelaide. I spent my time visiting the museum of South Australia where they have quite a good section on different south pacific nations, as well as quite a lot on Aboriginal culture. I also spent some time at the South Australia Art Gallery - I’m not much of an art buff - if it doesn’t catch my eye straight away then I tend to just keep walking past, so it didn’t take very long for me to get through it! Adelaide is quite a small city, and is nice and easy to [View Full Entry]

Monday - after a very long 14 hour flight and six hour layover in Sydney, Ron and I were very dirty and tired. We slept in our clothes on the flight over from San Francisco and were beginning to feel very nasty, but very glad to be on vacation. The rest of the group from Topcon met us at the Sydney airport and we all flew over to Adelaide together. Those guys came from all over the world and I enjoyed meeting them and hearing about where they came from. That was a nice and short hour and a half flight. [View Full Entry]

My little dog, my walking companion.
It is just under 4 weeks till my trip to Spain to walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. I am in the process of making final prepartions including my fitness. In particular, I gave my leg a bit of a try over a two week period and feel it fared quite well. I managed to walk 130km over 10 days, an average of 12km. I am pleased with this achievement and feel I will be able to average 15 to 20km a day depending of the terrain and weather. Much better that I thought I would do since I broke [View Full Entry]

I will have to go back and post some additional pictures, since upon review I did not post some of the better shots taken in and around Sydney; but we will hold this for a later posting. On Febuary 1st we flew from Sydney to Adelaide. The entire week before, Adelaide and South Australia had tempatures of 40C+. In the summer time South Australians are accustomed to 40 C for one or two days but then a break with the tempature declining into the 30's but never a full week of 40C and higher. For the four days we were in [View Full Entry]

DAY 146 Words like, sunshine, beach, warm temperature, ocean, swimming pool, beer, BBQ, steak, snags, Mosquito’s and 4X4 are everyday words that we are now lucky enough to be using on our Australian adventure. They are not to be conceived that we are having a great time arsing about, enjoying the sunshine, being on the beach, in this lovely warm temperature or in the swimming pool with the beer and a BBQ (lets not forget we are missing a monthly salary) and I am concerned with the current state of the economy and if we will be able to find work [View Full Entry]
