Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

It's only ten days until I jet off into the land of colour and gold and i'm all but calm about it. I spent most of the day getting my final medical checks and supplies as i'll have little time to focus over the next week and a half. It's hard to believe that 139 days ago I started the count down, and now i'm only but days away from the experience. Over the past few weeks i've taken on the name of White Girl amongst my friends and co-workers, so i've decided that a Blog is essential in noting where [View Full Entry]

Introduction We were up early so we committed to a big walk today - Onkaparinga. This is a long and tough walk, and as it turned out it was the toughest and scariest walk we have had for some time. What happened We started off well on the Sundews track, making our way down into the gorge. Instead of turning left, we turned right and rock hopped down the creek for about an hour. We had some seen some interesting sites - herons fishing, a canoe tree and bull rushes. As we rock-hopped, we looked around for the path that would [View Full Entry]

Adelaide is offically my least favorite city. As I've probably mentioned hundreds of times in this blog. So i'll let it go for now. I'm crazily excited to be getting back to Perth in the next few weeks. 19 days exactly, I'll be outta here. I'm applying for jobs there already so I won't end up like this again, having to go back to this city. The weather has been very nice here, reminding me just how much I dont miss winter at all. End of the week is supposed to be about 40 degrees. That temperature seems hotter in Adelaide [View Full Entry]

I've decided to minimize my subscriber list. I'm sending this thing out to a lot of people, but I haven't heard from most of you since I got to Australia. So, you have my email address, if you feel like it might be nice thing to do, send me a message sometime. So, for the rest of you that will still be getting these emails....I'm in Adelaide! I definitely wasn't happy about it, and I'm still working my ass off to get myself back to Perth, but, its not so bad. Its just a big change, really. But, it'll be good [View Full Entry]

We all went out for a drive today. We left here at 10am, and drove for about two hours into the Adelaide Hills. Its really so pretty out there. The roads are a bit scary, cuz they're so narrow and winding. We stopped in Mount Pleasant for lunch. We went to the hotel/pub in town. It was a cute little building, with not so great food. Excellent hot chocolate though (danielle and I got hot chocolate cuz it was FREEZING). On the way out, PJ and my mom got a "Pub Squash." Danielle and I were SURE they said "Pub Squat" [View Full Entry]

Danielle and I went into the city today. It only took us 40 minutes on the train (which wasn't bad, since it pretty much went along the ocean for a lot of the way). After looking in some shops in Rundle Mall, we took the tram to Glenelg. They've replaced the tram since I was here a couple years ago, so it wasn't as fun. The old one was all creaky and....well, old. We had lunch in the jetty pub, right by the beach. We got calamari again, to see if we could find some that was amazing. So far, the [View Full Entry]

Today was fantastic. Danielle and I went with my mom and PJ down to the Noarlunga Fiesta. There was lots of wine tasting (which we didn't partake in), and hot boys. Danielle and I went outside once my mom and PJ started playin' the pokies. And there were the hottest guys ever. It was excellent. We went to a beer stand and told the guy we were new here and didn't know what beer was good. So he told us to try Tooeys Light and then Hahn's Light. The first tasted a bit like Kokanee, and the second like Canadian. The [View Full Entry]
