27 05 2010 Final blog entry today as we are now home. For those who have been following our big trip to the other side of the world thank you for your interest. It has been an adventure of a lifetime and great fun. The purpose of the blog was to let family and friends know where we were but as importantly for us it will be a reminder of the wonderful memories we have had which we can access in our later years. I would certainly advise people to do this, it takes a bit of effort but if you don’t make a record of your days they get forgotten. Hopefully you enjoyed reading them as much as we enjoyed experiencing them. The final day was the awful early start, certainly still suffering from the ... read more

26 05 2010 Well the last full day of holiday before we return home at silly o’clock tomorrow morning. Unsurprisingly we woke up to another sunny day about 38 degrees but forecast for 48 by the weekend, maybe it is time to escape back home. We caught the double decker bus to have a tour along the sea front and ended up at the amazing palm resort which is all man made. The huge hotel/resort Atlantic Palm which has 17 restaurants and is a mini city in itself was spectacular. By the end of the tour we were full of facts and figures about how many 5 6 and 7 star hotels are there or being built we lost count. I wonder who is going to stay in these? We finished up at the Dubai Mall ... read more

25 05 2010 Well it may be the penultimate day but we are still in full holiday mode. We had a good brekkie then it was off to the red bus tour of Dubai. We went to the Dubai museum where they had a series of scenes from old Dubai. Thankfully it was air conditioned and quite informative. The trip also included a look at the old Kings shack of a house which was not worth the effort but we had a nose anyway. However one of the sheiks that apparently runs the museum got chatting to us and must have enjoyed our conversation as when we went to leave he asked one of the staff to get hats and T-shirts for us as presents! It transpires he has a house in Eastbourne and goes there ... read more

24 05 2010 Slept really well and went down for a delicious breakfast. Our first day proper in Dubai began. Unsurprisingly it was a hot dry clear day about 40 degrees. We went to the air conditioned Dubai Mall where we had unfinished business. Apparently this is the biggest mall in the world. After 7 minutes of walking from the hotel we were there. The place has every shop and brand from around the world you can name. We found ourselves buying a ticket for the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. We found out it was started in 2004 and finished this January. The lift to the viewing gallery takes 60 seconds and my ears popped twice on the way up. Once at the top you have a panoramic view of the city ... read more

23 05 2010 Up at 0615 hours for the 0700 hours shuttle for the airport. Back in the lap of Emirates luxury. We had a small breakfast at the lounge and awaited our flight. There was a warning of a storm over the Bay of Bengal and the recent air crash in India which we were due to fly over was at the back of our mind. Got on board and we were 2 0f 4 people in business class so were truly spoilt. We both started to watch the film Sherlock Holmes but the buffeting actually sent us to sleep so we never saw the end of it. We learned the plane had to divert round what was later described as a bit of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal and therefore took longer ... read more

22 05 2010 We woke up slightly sad as today was the day we left our little piece of heaven, Shasa hotel. We have had a lovely time here and got to know the staff so well. The sun was shining and we had our last breakfast. The bright spot though was our Thai friend Meaw who we thought we would not see again was on reception with Jak and we were able to say goodbye personally. We got a picture of us together and said a sad farewell. I am sure we will also be missed there as well. It had been a lovely place and we will miss it as it was the longest we had stayed in one place since we started our travels in March. The trip to Samui airport went well ... read more

May 22nd 2010

21 05 2010 Last full day here and we cannot believe that it will be off to Bangkok tomorrow. We have loved the Shasa hotel and would recommend it to anyone who wants to be spoiled and have a relaxing time in Samui. We went to Nathon today on the west coast. The sun was shining again and it was another hot day. Nathon was bigger than we though and even boasted a department store. Wendy bought a few things and we saw the fishing fleet with teems of Thai people sorting out the nets. We hadn’t planned on going to any temples today to see any more mummified monks. You can imagine our surprise then as a pick up truck with a newly mummified monk overtook us and we were face to face with the ... read more
