Cape York - Friday 5 th June Hi all, today was a special day. Xavier and I went out for an early morning fish on the Tinny. It was the first time we had fished together on the boat. Well what an interesting fishing trip. I caught an enormous 105cm Queen fish. OMG. It was even attacked by a shark as I was pulling it in. It was the most exciting thing that has happened to me on this trip. Even better than catching the shark the night before. That was the start to a very peaceful day. On the same boat trip we caught 10 or small Queen fish. Anyhow, we decided today to leave this beach camp tomorrow morning. We tried to catch more sharks tonight but no luck. Got lots of bites but ... read more

Cape York. - Thursday 4th June Hi all, as I mentioned in the previous blog I woke up at 3 am to see two sharks circling our area of beach. We worked out we had left a fish carcass on the beach and at high tide it was being washed in the shallows. We decided we would try to fish for shark tonight. Anyhow the day was beautiful and we swam in the river again when the tide was out. The water is so clean and fresh. Xavier caught a 91 cm Queen fish from the Tinny. A pretty big fish and one that he cut up into fillets for the freezer. As the day progressed we decided to build a fire. Not exactly cold weather but we had not had a fire on this trip ... read more

Cape York - Wednesday 3rdJune Ok here we go. We woke up at the Seisa park at 5.30am and we had to pack three cars. Left the park at 9.50am. I really would have thought we could all pack up in less time but we didn't. Tracey is just so slow when she is half asleep. I made sure I woke her up early by pretending to be a horse and shaking her trailer camper. She still calls me a pest. Once packed we went to Bamaga to do some shopping. Bread, milk, biscuits, water, soft drink etc etc. off we went to Mutee Heads. We were still a little bit shy of open air bush camping due to the extreme rain experience we encountered early this week but the forecast did not have rain so ... read more

8 - Cape York Tuesday 2nd June Today Paul and his family left for home. But before anyone woke up I was woken up by noise in our camp hut. This was at 3 am in the morning. What did I find? An enormous horse tucking into a packet of bread crumbs. He had already eaten the sliced bread as well as kicked into the cask wine. I could not shoo him away. So I took so photos and I thought the flash would scare him. No such luck. So here I was at 3 am in the morning having a stand off with a 2 metre horse. I finally flicked him with a tea towel and that got his attention and he walked out. The horses here are gentle and run around the streets. They ... read more

Hi all, a very busy day today. The group split up today. Matthew and his family headed back to Mutee Heads to try their luck fishing that spot, remembering he was not successful the day before. The rest of us did some checking out spots for camping. We went to Alau beach camp. It was run down and not very appealing. Took this off the list. Second was back to Punsand Bay. It was a great camp. Good restaurant, good accommodation spots right on the beach And only 1 or 2 km from the Tip. we also looked at Loyalty beach. Not impressed with that one either. We had a lunch at Punsand Bay. In the afternoon Xavier took Tonina and Tracey for a little tinny ride just for fun. Well it turned out to be ... read more

Cape York Thursday 28th May Hi all, today is the day. Our plan to get to the tip of cape York and finally get to our original destination, the most Northern Point of the Australian mainland. We had a couple of destinations to get to before we make the final walk to the tip. First we had a look at three planes that had crashed during world war 2. None of these planes crashed due to enemy activity. I assume they crashed due to either mechanical failure or pilot error. There were three crashes. One was a DC3 and the second was a bomber. Both wrecks were in the same spot they had crashed. Obviously we did not deal with crashes in those days as we do now. The site has been left to the elements ... read more

Hi all, today we decided we would go and try our luck at a well known fishing spot. It is hard to get to and you need a four wheel drive. the last section of road just before the beach was extremely soft and Troopy got stuck. Sand driving needs car wheel pressures at around 15 to 20psi. Mine were at 30 psi and Troopy just stopped. got the tyre pressures reduced down to 20psi and put the Maxx Trax under the back wheels(Maxx Trax are a 1 metre long track that is placed just in front of the tyre to make it easier for the wheel to grab. Got out of the sand easily with those adjustments . And got to the top of the sand dune. Was not a successful fishing expedition as we ... read more

Hi all, this morning we woke up to get ready to cross the Jardine river on the ferry. Let me just explain the ferry. It is a platform that is linked to both sides of the river by a heavy steel cable. the ferry can handle 6 Landcruisers 2 abreast. Cost was $99 per car. We got on at 8.30am. Once on the other side of the river we were in Aboriginal protected land. The $99 we paid included a permit. To camp on aboriginal sites. We drove through a small town called Bamaga before settling into the park at Seisa which is the most northern town in the Cape Pensinsula. Another 50km or more and we will reach the tip of Australia. We unpacked and after lunch went to one of the islands, about 500metres ... read more

Cape York Monday 25th Woke up today on the Southern side of Gunshot creek. It was a reasonably steep entrance and also a steep exit although the exit was dry. The Troopy lifted its wheels off the ground quite a few times as it was going through Gunshot. Let me just say my adrenaline was pumping and heart racing. Troopy did well. After Gunshot we got to Cockatoo Creek. It made Gunshot look easy. The creek was about 30 metres wide and in two spots there were rapids. Oh my god what an experience. The entrance was steep and a little rocky and immediately followed by muddy sand, we then did the crossing in the water, the water got up to the bull bar and in the back the water was up to the exhaust. The ... read more

Hi all, today Sunday 24th May, we are leaving Weipa before 10am (check out time) and driving back out to the Cape Development road and to Bramwell station which is basically a fuel and food stop. It is also the formal start to the Old Telegraph Track known as the OTL. We took a couple of photos at the entrance to the track and headed into the track. About 5 km in we reached our first obstacle. Palm creek had a nearly vertical entrance (looked vertical to me but probably wasn't) and this also had a very steep exit which was winch up only. No cars are able to get up without a winch. I decided to not attempt this. Tonina and Lisa were with me. Matthew was brave enough to attempt and was successful. Very ... read more
