Cape York - Wednesday 3rdJune
Ok here we go. We woke up at the Seisa park at 5.30am and we had to pack three cars. Left the park at 9.50am. I really would have thought we could all pack up in less time but we didn't. Tracey is just so slow when she is half asleep. I made sure I woke her up early by pretending to be a horse and shaking her trailer camper. She still calls me a pest. Once packed we went to Bamaga to do some shopping. Bread, milk, biscuits, water, soft drink etc etc. off we went to Mutee Heads. We were still a little bit shy of open air bush camping due to the extreme rain experience we encountered early this week but the forecast did not have rain so we are going to chance it. Got the the perfect campsite close to the mouth of the Jardine river by 11.30am. It was a perfect place. Lots of room and great views. I love it here. Xavier and Matthew went fishing straight away with the Tinny. They saw the croc again on the edge of the sand bar at the mouth of the river.
They really, really scare me especially at night. There is no way I would go anywhere near the water at night. I would be terrified. I told Tracey she should go near the water to check it out but she just hit me. The sand dunes that we have camped on are very wooded with lots of little tracks around the bush camps. Tracey, Tonina and I decided to take a walk through the trees while the boys were fishing. We ended up walking from our camp to the opening of the river to the sea which was about 2 km half of it in very soft sand. Boy I am getting old as I felt every step. Matthew and Xavier put the crab pots out as it was getting dark. They are crazy. There is no way I would go out in that water anywhere near dark. No thanks. Anyhow they pulled the pots out the next morning and they were mangled by the croc. Now these crab posts are made of heavy duty steel with wire mesh. OMG. I am now more scared of the water. Mind you when the water is at low tide there are fresh
water flowing with pools about 10 to 20 cm deep all close to our camp. This water is so refreshing to wade in. I had a nice time dancing in the water and getting wet with Matthew and Allison's kids, Mason and Jakim. The only problem is I got tired before they did. Anyhow I came up to the camp totally drenched and still not feeling cold. A great place for small children at low tide. At 3am I was woken up by splashes in the water. I got all excited as I looked out of Troopy and saw something floating about a metre from shore. It then turned around and swam back. I jumped out of the Troopy. This was it. I have finally seen a crocodile cruising for a meal. Now it ended up that at 3am in the morning my wife and I are wide awake watching two creatures swimming a metre from shore. It turned out they were 1.5metre sharks as we saw their fins and Tails. Disappointed they weren't crocodiles but still excited that we saw two sharks. Anyhow didn't sleep after that.
