Mijn eerste week in Port Douglas zit erop...

Stories, aussie perspectives, Kiwis want a new flag too. One got sticker for van around Australia. Fathers with babies, mothers with children. Life. Sea eagle passed by. Mon 24. After a tough second term at school with reports and portfolios nagging us right until the end, this holiday was very much needed! We departed on July 1st for north Queensland. Arriving in Cairns in the early evening, we were transported an hour further north to Port Douglas to the Radisson Treetops Resort. Although the resort wasn't directly in downtown Port Douglas, the beautiful setting and quiet environment was just what we wanted! On day 1, we decided what tours we were going to do over the next few days, booked them with the tour companies and headed out to the beach. Port Douglas is at the end of Four-Mile beach... and we walked about half of it from the resort into town. The weather was beautiful - sunny and low to mid 20s. We were ... read more

Have spent the last 2 weeks at Dougie's Resort in Port Douglas. Getting trapped at Dougie's is a common problem as no-one who stays for longer than a few days seems to be able to get away from the place. So I have decided I have to make my break for freedom and will be heading on on Wednesday. Have had a fantastic couple of weeks and made some good friends so I will be sad to leave, but at the same time, the longer I spend here, the less time I will spend in the rest of Oz. Since my last entry I have got a job working as a kitchen hand in a place called Cactus Bar. So now I'm an expert dishwasher and I make a mean pizza! So have been dividing my ... read more

What wonders await? Fri. 14. 1600 stickers arrive from Perth. Now I'm broke. I was down to 120. Multi-media hit having impact. Overcast - no rain. Sun. 9. Early shower and spruik. Bloke wanted flag so I delivered on way out of town. Road less travelled. Not by aussies but. Natonal Park, long lake, Lilly Pilly tree fruiting. Massive support for SC&B. Winding road to Port Douglass. Hang gliding at scenic lookout. I was mobbed for stickers. Many women and older men keen. Several waxed almost poetic, one rapturous. To engender such articulated emotion an amazing feeling to see. Major scene in Douglass. Good spruik sidewalk pub holiday mood. Beer and saw some AFL. Another bloke gave number to call, he wants a big flag. Mon. 10. What can I say stickers sprouting around the country. Many from Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Tassie, taking them home. Its Marcus, making my first official blog entry from OZ. Mum and I arrived safe and well, can't actually belive I am here. We arrived and went straight off to the mountians, was quite interesting but realy wanted to freshen up so went for a swim on the beach as the sun went down. The appartments are amazing, kind of undersold by the others, realy modern and amazing circular bath tub and balconys. Just been out for dinner, and maybe its jetlag or maybe excitment, but lauren and I have come to the web cafe while the others go to sleep. Appart from dad, who is making another work call- sabatical? Will post more after Ayers Rock, as the only web cafe there cost $18 per hour, will just make lots of mental notes and fill ... read more

So, finally, after all the days of storms, the winds drop enough, and the sun comes out, and we make it to the Great Barrier Reef. After all the waiting, there's an awful feeling it must be an anticlimax, particularly when we arrive after a one and a quarter hour boat trip feeling somewhat seasick (good thing we didn't travel when the sea was supposed to be rough). Once in the water, there is no sense of anticlimax. The coral and the fish are fantastic - and yes, we did find Nemo! They are luminous in the sunlight, and more varieties than you can imagine. Even when you've been over the same spot for 2 hours, you are still seeing a new type of fish or coral every minute. The squid are scary though - they ... read more

Left Melbourne on Wednesday, arrived in Cairns and got to my hostel by about 9pm. Just my luck, it was raining. Hostel was ok ish. A long walk from anywhere, but reasonably clean. A weird bunch of people staying there though. So tried to spend as little time there as possible! Found out straight away that Cairns is a party haven (though I kind of knew that anyway) - loads of pubs/clubs, and plenty of tourists (mainly British) to boot. Spent the next day trying to avoid the rain as it was on and off all day. Finally got some sunshine on the Friday so headed down to a big outdoor pool they call "The Lagoon" and spent some chill out time. Went out each of the 3 evenings I was there, and met a few ... read more
