Port Douglas is lovely, there is a long golden beach and a very small relaxed town. Unfortunately we are over here in their Wet Season. The last few days prior to our arrival there was torrential rain, flooding and a cyclone threatening the area. The temperatures are really high, but it is muggy, overcast and raining off and on all the time. We have been unable to go on the beach, normally there is a net sectioned off part which is used and has coastguards but due to the recent bad weather there is a lot of debry being swept on to the beach and to ensure that the nets are not damaged they have been taken down. So although it is now calm, warm and the sea has temperatures of 29 degrees, we have been ... read more

We've been spending the last two months of our lives in Port Douglas, in Far North Queensland. We connected with one of Elnaz’s high school mates (Heather) and ended up being roommates with her and her boyfriend (Marty) for our time in Port Douglas. It has been such a great experience and a great part of our travel. When we first got here, I got a job as a short order cook at one of the coffee shops that has quite an extensive menu in the cafe, while Elnaz got a glamorous job as a server at one of the very posh restaurants in town. As time went on we realized that if we wanted to save as much money as possible one job wasn't going to be enough so Elnaz managed to secure herself another ... read more

We headed for The Rainforest Habitat for 8am where they offer a buffet breakfast in what I can only concisely describe as a bird sanctuary. You're not meant to actually feed the birds, but as a kindly American girl offered to take our photo, a bird swooped down, stole some of my second helping of bacon and knocked over the bucksfizz in doing so. Also saw our first Cassoway here - had no idea they were so big or colourful (they are the size of a man). Also saw plenty of Koalas, kangaroos and crocs amongst many other native animals. A great half day. The afternoon was again spent on the beautiful Four Mile Beach. We walked up to the Flagstaff Hill lookout for a full view of the beach. In Port Douglas is also the ... read more

We headed north for our second destination, taking in some great views of the coastline - the driver argued the case for the view being more impressive than the better known Great Ocean Road. However, we'll give our own verdict on that in 4 weeks time!! We stayed at a YHA place called Port O'Call. Luxury!! We had ensuite and unlimited aircon use!!!! The bar/restaurant area is a bit dated, but the food is okay - the portions are large though! Spent the afternoon exploring Port Douglas itself which has quite a village, green and leafy feel to it. A very nice, low-rise, boutiquey town - we'd go back there. Here the top 3 attractions are : The Rainforest Habitat / Breakfast with the Birds (blog: ) Mossman Gorge (blog: ) Daintree National Park / Cape ... read more

As we got up to catch our early am flight from Darwin, the scantily glad clubbers were spilling out into the road... makes you feel old hey!! We arrived in Cairns at 8am and made our way to Port Douglas where Mel (7 months pregnant with twins!) kindly came to collect us. We spent the rest of the day slobbed out on the sofa watching the Australian Open drinking tea and relaxing in the bath... heaven, we hadn't seen a TV or a bath for a long time!! Mel and Maddie the dog did us proud!! Paul (my old mate from Sheffield Poly) arrived home from work looking no different to how he looked 4 years previously when we last met. Was good to see him!! In true Ozzy syle we opened a couple of cold ... read more

We booked a bus up to Port Douglas to drop us of at midday on Thursday and pick us up at 5pm the next day. We were staying at a youth hostel called the 'Parrotfish' which was in between the main street and the beach. i went there with the family so knew my way round a bit (although we couldn't find the beach for about half an hour at first- even worse considering it is called 4 mile beach!). We couldn't check into out room when we got there so we went straight down to the beach. It is 4 miles long as the name suggests but you can only swim in the netted 50 metre square area. We spent the day down there and even jogged down 4 mile beach (not all the way)... ... read more

We’ve just spent the last two days in Port Douglas, a delightful tourist town on the North Coast, an hour north of Cairns. It is near Port Douglas where two of the great wonders of the natural world meet, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. To visit these natural wonders is why we’re here, but we all kind of fell in love with Port Douglas itself. It would be the perfect spot to spend a week lounging at the beach. Our hotel was right across the street from Four Mile Beach. It’s stinger season, so you couldn’t really swim in the ocean unless you were in an area partitioned by stinger nets. Such an area did exist in our portion of beach, so we were able to enjoy the 80+ degree ocean water. It ... read more

Hiya! Its our last night in Port Douglas, and as always, here I am writing our blog - Its been a lovely few days here - not much to do but that's why its so lovely - we've spent lazy days by the marina, the four mile beach, sipping drinks, bit of shopping of course and eating - what else... Port Douglas is the nearest gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. With an hours drive from Cairns, to get here we passed some amazing views of secluded beaches via an endless stretch of coastal roads - it felt like driving towards paradise, lots of palm trees which seemed to increase as we got closer to Port Douglas. An upmarkt resort, it is pure luxury with rich yachts and apartments. Our hotel was situated about 10 mins ... read more
