Finally got myself a job! It's in Clermont, Queensland on a cattle station which should be awesome. It's with one of the other girls I did the OutBackPackers course with - Suzie - so nice to be with someone I already know! We left Brisbane yesterday at 2.30pm and arrived in Mackay at 7.15am today - luckily we slept most of the way! Stuck here until 1.30pm then got another bus journey (only 6 hours this time!) to Clermont. I think we're going to be in the middle of nowhere to be honest! Job sounds good - the guy checked we could ride horses/quads/motorbikes and mentioned something about feeding calves and other general farm work. Not sure if I'll have internet access there though so don't panic if no-one hears from me for a few weeks. ... read more

So, also musste ich mich sputen. Darwin - Kueste - Mackay - Freunde treffen in Rockhampton - Wohnung Freunde in Biloela - Miles (Condamine). Das ist der ... read more

Queensland, MacKay Back in Melbourne it was getting decisively cold. The evenings were what spurred the decision to move towards a hotter climate, but as I approached various jobs and sent of resumes I discovered that was everyone else’s plan also. With feedback only from one lead I decided to follow it up. It was working the bar at a strip club in Brisbane. The evening I arrived, 17th July, I was told they only needed dancers, and although I was willing to parade around on stage I was unprepared for back lounge sittings, especially as they were full on contact. I also felt quite angry about the whole situation, as it was a steal. For $70 you got 15minutes of my time, of which I got half of that, $300, for a few hours. The ... read more

Rollingstone Beach Resort Caravan Park was quite different. Still can't swim in ocean so focus on the pool. It was really nice with a tropical setting. AIRLIE BEACH A 360 km drive sown the Bruce Highway went smoothly although we are surprised at the infrequent overtaking lanes. Travelling at 90 km/hr we do tend to slow the traffic down. We had great expectations of Airlie Beach that were not met. You know, loud music everywhere and no really good seaside eating places. A lot has been done to beautify the place and the man made lagoon was impressive. The pristine white beaches are just not there. Mud when the tide is out. Airlie seems to be mainly a hub for Whitsunday touring and a young person's destination. Oh well, maybe we expected too much! The Big4 ... read more

Hi all, When I wrote my last blog I was in Brisbane and that seems like ages ago now. After Brizzy we’ve been traveling up the coast to Mackay, where I am now, by way of Noosa Heads, Rainbow Beach, Fraser Island, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Mundubbera, Rockhampton and Yeppoon. Although some members of the original group that met in Byron Bay are still here (Manu, Benny and I), some of the others have gone their separate ways. That’s all part of traveling, and we’ve met up with new people along the way. As I’m typing this, I’m sitting on a camping chair with the river at my back and the ocean to my right, the laptop hooked up to my car battery in a deserted stretch of nature next to the beach in Mackay. We’ve been ... read more

We arrived in Mackay at something like 10pm and waited at the bus stop to be picked up by our new WWOOFing family. Quite a scary experience as Mackay is a very small place and we had no idea what to do if nobody turned up. Eventually though we were collected and began our lovely stay on a farmstead about 40 mins drive from the coast. Really gorgeous countryside and a great family too.... read more

After returning to Australia I take a quick visit to Surfers and then hire a car and drive the 12 hour drive to Mackay to catch the plane over to Brampton Island where I worked in the restaurant in the resort for 3 months..... Being a tropical Island on the great barrier and whitsundays..the island was full of wierd and wanderful creature...snakes...spiders...parrots ...lauriquetes.. flying foxes and best of all kangaroos the size of me..... After a very bad flood hit to the island the resort was back up and running and we enjoyed a pleasurable 2 hour flight over whitehaven beach and around the whitsundays....enjoy the photographs....... read more

18th February 2008 Woke up on Long Island to more torrental rain and wind. today We left the island with regrets that we hadn't seen it at its best. However it had been a great chaance to catch up with Jo after three years and to meet Alan. We really enjoyed their company and hearing of their plans for the future. They told us all about life in Moranbah and the mine where Alan works in the office and Jo drives one of the buses which collect the miners after work and delivers them for their shifts. Jo told us about her property in Maloola which sounds idyllic and we really hope to come back and visit when they get back there in a few years time. Jo and I caught up with all the family ... read more

15th February 2008 We checked in this morning at Gladstone Airport to catch a plane to Mackay. Checked in Ok for the 7-50am flight and went off to get a coffee. Before we had finsihed our coffee an anouncement was made over the airport tanoy for Mr and Mrs Jayes to go back to check in. At check in we were told that all flights to Mackay had been cancelled as the airport at Mackay was flooded. Mackay had had 625mm ( 25”) of rain in the last 24 hours. They said that we could get on the flight as far as Rockhampton (1 hour further North) or wait until tomorrow when the airport may or may not reopen. There was one other lady on the flight and we thought we could share a hire car ... read more

14th February 2008 It started raining heavily yesterday about 2pm in the afternoon and continued most of the night. I was convinced we were going to be marooned at the camp site as the land is low and the creeks were overflowing from the day before. We left our beachside cabin not knowing whether we would be able to get to Gladstone or not as we had heard on the television of roads in the area being closed. We decided to use the main Bruce Highway rather than the smaller country roads in case of flooding. We wanted to call in to Agnes Water and The Town of 1770 on the way as we had read that they were very attractive seaside resorts and the last of the big surfing beaches. We made good progress along ... read more
