I must admit to having had a great time on the Fraser island self-drive, it was a totally different experience to anything i have done previously so from that point of view it was probably the highlight of my trip thus far. One thing that was also notable about was the wildlife that we encountered while on the island. We were advised during the orientation that we should ensure that we are "dingo-safe" by following the basic procedures needed to ensure we are not attacked by a dingoes, a particular problerm at night when there are many of them around. When we were all camping out on the first night people seemed disappointed that we did not encounter any dingoes. However if people were disappointed with the lack of dingo action on the first night then ... read more

Consider the concept: Eight total strangers are given a 4x4 Land Cruiser, camping equipment and the means to get to the worls largest sand island for several days. No tour guides, no people who know each other, just a bunch of people set loose on a virtually uninhabited island to live and manage by themselves for three days. To me this sounds more like the formula for a reality TV show, but it became far more than that this past week when i found myself in just such a situation. This was the Fraser island self-drive, something that was a great experience and which i am really sad is now over. I got the bus up here from Byron Bay on Thursday, i knew that i would be looking to get out to Fraser Island when ... read more

Travelling down from Airlie Beach to Hervey Bay - the nearest access point to Fraser Island - we stopped en route in Rockhampton ('Rockie') for a night to break up the long journey. Apparently Australias cattle capital, the route to Rockie was dotted with sightings of cattle trucks bursting at the seams with horns and tail poking out every where. The following day, we were back on the Greyhound bus until arriving at Hervey Bay Beaches backpackers in time for our briefing from the Beaches staff. There were 18 people booked up for the following days 3 day 2 night departure to Fraser Island with Bay 4wd Adventures, and we divided into two groups of nine, and then set about sorting the Alcohol and food shopping to see us through the next three days. Our group ... read more

Arrived in Hervey Bay around 9.00pm. Got up early and booked to go to Fraser Island for the day. Caught the Fraser Island ferry and joined our 4-wheel drive tour. The whole island is composed of sand, and supports the only sand growing rainforest in the world. Driving to 75 mile beach, we spotted a young dingo on the road side, and various other birds etc. 75 mile beach is amazing, and stopped off to see the coloured sands of the Pinnacles and the wreck of the cruise ship Maheno, which came ashore in 1935. After lunch we walked along sand tracks through forests of scribbly gum and huge satinay, brush box and kauri trees to Central station, a former forestry camp. Fraser Island has a past largely associated with the logging industry. It is now ... read more

Hi there! Kristen and I returned from a 2 night camping trip the other day at Fraser Island, and it was absolutely amazing! When I last wrote, we were in Noosa. Nothing terribly exciting to report there. We stayed just 2 nights, it was raining on and off and pretty overcast. We spent one day walking along trails in National Park and other day on Sunshine Beach. Then we went to Hervey Bay to commence our Fraser Island tour. We spent one night at a hostel in Hervey Bay, where we met the other people we'd be camping with. Everyone was split into 5 groups of about 10. Our group consisted of myself and Kristen, Katie--a 26 year old parole officer from Germany, Anneka-- a 20 year old german girl who just finished highschool and is ... read more

I have now acquired a true traveller's patina of grime and sweat and sand. You'll also be glad to know that my feet, previously covered up every summer by rowing shoes, are now the brownest they have ever been (or it could be the dirt, I suppose). I don't know if my clothes will ever smell clean again after returning from Fraser Island - imagine baking hot sands, sweaty journeys in 4 wheel drive vans and no showers...nice. (Orla, are you sure you still want to meet me in Sydney?!) However, it was a great experience camping out on the world's largest sand island and taking my morning bath in freshwater dune lakes: Lake McKensie has to be closest thing to heaven on Earth - wide stretches of bright white sand, with clear blue water gently ... read more

Yes, we know we havn't done a blog for ages but i promise its not because we're being lazy (or too drunk!) we have actually been really busy. We arrived in Byron Bay after Sydney for a few relaxing days on the beach before heading into Queensland for 10 days of activities. Great little town which is obviously what everyone thinks as it was hell trying to find a hostel! They've got the most beautiful beaches, one called Tallow which is great for surfing. However, as me and Trev are pretty pants at it and can't even stand up on one when its on the sand, we settled for body boarding instead. Great fun, but getting out there is so difficult as the currents are so strong and the waves huge, i almost lost my bikini ... read more

We arrived in Rainbow Beach the day before heading off on our Fraser Island adventure. We checked into a hostel called 'Frasers' and later that day had our briefing for the next three days on the island. We got to meet the group that we would be spending a few days with, 4 of which were French and the other two were an Australian couple from Brisbane. After the safety briefing for driving the 4x4 correctly, we put together a list of the food we would require and headed to the supermarket. This is when we noticed that the 4 French people couldnt speak much English atall, and although we can just get by in a couple of other languages, French isnt one of them. When we got back we had a drink with the group ... read more

Fraser island is lovely and as our tour guide (Ranger Rob) pointed out often is a natural phenomenon. We went on a 3 day guided tour here with the cool dingo tour company and had a great time. Fraser island is the largest sand island in the world, approximately 124km by 15 km and required 4 x 4 buses to get us around. It is comprised entirely of sand apart from three rock formations(Indian head being one of these). It has a large aqua firm (water table) and has many natural fresh water lakes and creeks. The island is constantly changing (gradually) as more sand is deposited apparently coming up from antartica. It is unique also because of the amount of life it supports as it has two nutrient layers. Its home to several poisonous species ... read more

Fraser Island is the 4th largest island off Australia and the only island comprised entirely of sand. Its amazing to see all the wildlife that has grown and lives on Fraser Island, but there it is, dingoes and all! Our group, Team 2 renamed Team Heavy because of the truck's license plate, was part of a larger caravan of 5 total trucks containing 50+ adventure seekers. Team Heavy was made up of 5 British, 2 Americans, 2 Koreans, and one weird 45 year old spring breaking Canadian. The crew was good because, aside from the Koreans, which we all believed were lesbians but no one could confirm due to their lack of english oratory skills, we all have had similar traveling experiences. A british couple is traveling the world much like myself and had plenty of ... read more
