So today I went on a free trip to Cape Tribulation. I got picked up at 8.45am by Peter from Cape tribulation Connections and driven north through Mossman to Mossman Gorge. It was a bit cold to swim, but I'll get back there to swim sometime as its only 20 minutes up the road from Port. After Mossman we continued north and went to Daintree Mango Animal Sanctuary, and saw some crocs, snakes, and birds. From there we waited at the Daintree river and caught the cable ferry across, then continued up the road to the Alexandra lookout point. From there, we did a quick rainforest walk on the Marrdja Boardwalk, then were dropped off at Cape Tribulation beach for a picnic lunch. After that, we headed back south again and stopped to do a croc ... read more

So after spending an afternoon in Tully (no sniggers please) we headed off for our final Australian destination - Cairns. We’d managed to score ourselves some cheap accommodation by using the last of the vouchers we’d been given when we booked Fraser Island and Whitsundays, so for $40 a night we were getting a private double room with free hourly shuttle buses into town and a free evening meal (free, providing you bought a drink). Result. After a few initial teething problems with the room (a dead cockroach in one corner, and a live one in another corner and the distinct stench of cheesy feet in the carpet, a bit like Infernos in London we scurried into town in search of this ‘free’ evening meal, only to be pretty disappointed to be paying $8 for our ... read more

Day 98: Friday, March 5th, 2010. Cape Tribulation, Australia. Per the Contiki Brochure, "Discover Daintree National Park and its ancient rainforests today. Explore the lush greenery and incredibly colourful wildlife on an interpretive walk with your Local Guide, who’ll tell you about the plants and animals unique to this area. You’ll also learn about the Aborigines’ beliefs and why this area is important to them. Enjoy another swim in these fabulous outdoor surrounds at a swimming hole, before heading back to Cape Tribulation, where thick forests grow all the way down to the water’s edge. Keep your camera handy!" Yup, brochure excerpt covered it pretty well. Richard, our local driver and tour guide for the rainforets, was a hoot. It still amazes me how many contrasting types of scenery there are in Australia. Getting off the plane in Cairns, well in the tropics, it felt weird to even be in the same country. Everything is so green and lush and there are big hills everywhere. The humidity is almost unbearable and you sweat even when you're not doing anything, although that's only at this time of year which is the wet season, where the temperature is at its highest and so's the rainfall. Cairns itself wasn't all that interesting. There are a few nice places to see, but mainly it seemed to be a traveller town with a lot of cheap and cheerful bars full of drunken backpackers. I'd had enough of drinking after Sydney, so as soon as I arrived I booked myself transport ... read more

Day 97: Thursday, March 4th, 2010. Cairns to Cape Tribulation, Australia. So, today I met up with the others who were doing the Cape Tribulation part of this trip. There were only 8 of us total: Myself, Emily (Canada), Harley (England), Aoifa (Ireland), Christy (Australia), Cam (Australia), Mark (Australia) and Ed (England). Our tour guide is Shaz (Australia) and we're going to have a driver named Richard (New Zealand) for the Cape Tribulation portion but a different one for the rest of the journey. Along the way to Cape Tribulation we stopped and took pictures of various coves and I can't remember their names/stories. One was where Steve Irwin met his untimely death- not a cheerful topic, especially to Australians. We stopped at Port Douglas and saw the cutest church, St. Mary... read more

CAIRNS & CAPE TRIBULATION CAIRNS Well we arrive after a couple of hours on the bus where Liam had to endure the film “Meet the Parents”, which had both Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, (the best he can wish either of hem is leprosy!) poor Charlotte! Having to listen to him ranting! We get dropped at the Greyhound stop by the Marina with no idea where to stay and no lonely planet! Off and away to the nearest free Wi-Fi spot, me thinks! After a couple of hours messing around trying to find a hostel, we plump for the cheapest, which is also the closest! The Nomad Esplanade! We head over and meet Josh who checks us in! Oh no, we have been given a double under a single with the thinnest mattress ever, along with ... read more

Well it’s been 3 years since me and Rob got together, quite strange being at the other side of the world for it! We bought each other a postcard and confectionery as it’s the only thing the store in Cape Tribulation stocks! It took an hour to do the 3km walk in the heat and humidity and we are not quite sure what to expect! We read in the lonely planet about a bat house - housing one or two fruit bats who have been either injured or orphaned. What we were greeted with was slightly different - 2 speckled fox??? Bats who were being hand reared as their mother had died. The lady literally hung the bats from her arm before transferring them to Rob - I was rather apprehensive but the bats had other ... read more

We get picked up from outside our hostel at 7.10am. We pick some more passengers up from other hostels along the way. First we enjoy a scenic coastal drive to Port Douglas via the Captain Cook Highway. We stop at a lookout and take photos of the view (absolutely beautiful). Next stop - The Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary. This is where we first encounter the cassowary. We are able to take advantage of the guided tour around the koala, python and baby croc (although its mouth was taped together - not good) We then have just over an hour to explore by ourselves. Mossman Gorge - first a walk through the rainforest then a swim in Mossman River. Lunchtime - we have a picnic and chat with the guide about kayaking, rafting and triathlon! We have ... read more

Friday I arrived in Cairns. Unfortunately the weather was not very nice. It was raining when we landed and it continued to rain off and on the entire day. I did a few errands but mostly relaxed for the rest of the day. Saturday I went to Kuranda, a small town outside of Cairns. I mainly did this because other than drink and book adventure tours there’s not much to do in Cairns. This time of year marine stingers (a.k.a. jellyfish) are present so swimming in the ocean is not possible. It continued to rain off and on throughout the day Saturday. There’s not much to do about it except deal with it. In Kuranda there is access to the Daintree Rainforest. This is the oldest rain forest in the world. I tried to go on ... read more

Jules and Sue arrived and we have had a splendid time mostly eating, drinking, talking, and keeping cool in the pool! They had a day in the rain and found the botanical gardens and an art gallery while i had a day trip to the rain forest . We Ventured into Cairns which is a city of around 140,000, it is not as pretty as port Douglas but I liked it , the night markets sell everything and there is an abundance of restaurants to choose from along the esplanade . It is here in the late afternoon that the fit and not so fit take their exercise walking running jogging or cycling its up to you. It is in this part of town that the locals and tourists share their environment with nature, crabs , migrating ... read more
