I left off considering whether to go on a jungle night walk or not. I decided that since the rainforest allegedly comes alive more at night time that it would be interesting to see it then, and embarked on about an hour an a half long tramp around the jungle. Whilst the rainforest wasn't dead I didn't see the masses of snakes and giant spiders and wombats that I had hoped. However there were some frogs, a couple of dragons sleeping on trees and some fairly small spiders and a white tailed rat skipping about in the bushes. So it was good enough but didn't blow me away. I'm afraid that Lonely Planet lies- it wasn't a party place at all- it was utterly boring in the resort. I ended up going to bed almost as ... read more

Hello, This morning I left Cairns again, this time to go to see more rainforest. We drove north along the coast to Mossman Gorge. From the car park we walked along the plastic boardwalk (recycled, but still a bit of an unsightly gash through the rainforest. Apparently there are plans to do more to make it wheelchair accessible. Rainforest for all!) through some very nice scenery. The gorge was pretty enough and I started to take a lot of pictures of trees and water and I could see a few fish (jungle perch, or flagtails) in the clear water. After that there was a 20 minute stop at a tiny wildlife park with various parrots and some crocodiles and wallabies. I might just be getting jaded by now, but I've seen all of the above in ... read more

The only way to access Cape Tribulation is via an old car ferry from Daintree which takes approx 10 cars at a time across the river. After crossing we drive up 30km through the midst of the rainforest, a canopy of trees across the road as we drive along the winding and sometimes scary road. We had planned to stay at Noahs campsite but we soon find out when we get there that you have to pre register by phone/internet....and there’s no phone signal. After driving another 7km to the local store we were told not to bother phoning as the campsite is always fully booked - need to give at least 3 days notice. Our only option was to book into the PK Jungle Village park for the night which is the MAIN backpacker joint. ... read more

Hey hey! Still in Cairns, just incase you were wondering whether I'd dropped off the other side of the planet. Been working super hard lately, 18hours some days, but its allowing me to save some pennies and although I'm constantly tired, I'm actually still enjoying myself. About a month ago I lost my job at the hostel working for accommodation and panicked cos I couldnt afford to pay rent...so I went on a major job hunting mission and found myself a new job the same day! Amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it (and will take any job going!). Only issue was the job is in Port Douglas (about an hours drive north of Cairns), but this actually worked to my advantage as they needed someone to drive the staff bus ... read more

We left Cairns and headed north towards Port Douglas for a lunch stop and then on to the Daintree River, as we travelled the trees became more lush and dense and though we had clear skies it was clear we were entering a rainforest. We went for a boat trip before boarding the ferry and had the whole boat to ourselves which was ace. Terry showed us four crocs as well as a blossom bat, snake, wonky crabs and some spoon billed birds. We then headed over the river on the ferry and made our way to the beach campsite at Cape Tribulation. Set up camp and investigated the beach just through the trees (with a couple of glasses of red wine!). Up early to go sea kayaking around the Cape, we saw a sea cow ... read more

Day 6 - Thur Aug 28 Cape Tribulation Up before the sun for the 3rd day in a row. Good grief! At least my hostel mates are incredibly quiet and mostly in bed by 11 pm. I love this hostel! Today, Cape Tribulation tour. I had debated between 2 companies who both go by an animal sanctuary where you are supposed to be able to hold koalas. Sadly, within the first 5 minutes of the tour, I realized I had made the wrong choice. The tour guide was nice enough, but his main concern was keeping us punctual, not making sure we were having fun. He was kind of a dud. On the tour were 3 Italians who smoked like chimneys, everytime the bus stopped, getting back on and smelling up the whole bus (yuck!), a ... read more

We headed north towards Cape Tribulation, stopping at the 'Daintree Tea Plantation', which was cool as we've never seen (or smelt) tea growing. We then had a quick stop at Thornton Beach to grab a coffee, which is a much superior drink. We had chosen to come to Far North Queensland in August as it is the end of winter, and subsequently has the coolest temperatures and least rainfall. It was a pleasant 27 degrees celsius as we began our drive! Our first planned stop was at the Marrdja Boardwalk to explore Mangrove (Tim's favourite tree) wetlands in the rainforest. We spotted several impressive 'Strangler Figs' - a tree species that grows around other trees and eventually kills the 'host' leaving a hollow mesh of vines in the shape of the original tree. Walk done, we ... read more

We got up and headed down to the breakfast provided, it was raining on the way which is apparently unusual at this time of year. After Simon had tried everything and we were all pretty full, we went out onto the beach using the umbrellas provided. There were a few breaks in the clouds and the rain came in short sharp bursts. It was still t-shirt weather though, despite the rain. We booked in for an exotic fruit tasting session in the afternooon, but went to cape tribulation beach first. There we managed to sculpt a rather good looking crocodile out of the sand, as well as burying people up to their knees. Then we went to the fruit farm, and tried a variety of fruits, pretty much all of which we'd never heard of before. ... read more

We packed up all our things at Port Douglas and drove round to find an ATM as we were down to our last $10 of Australian money. We were going to have to use a ferry as part of the next stage of the journey so we needed some cash. We drove north towards the Daintree river, where we were hoping to get a cruise. On the way we passed field after field of sugar cane. Then we came to the Daintree river cruising spot, which was like sort of a dusty car park with about 5 or 6 tented places all offering cruises of various types. We picked an electric cruise which had a croc-cam on board which was basically a TV connected to a video camera that he could focus on things and zoom ... read more
