21-8-11 Travelled to Lion’s Den Hotel at Helensvale today & booked into the camping area behind the pub, $26 a night with power, water & showers. We went to Cooktown for groceries & fuel, $1.47 for petrol & 99c for auto gas. We then went back to Lion’s Den for lunch, a very old pub built in 1875 with lots of character. We were lined up ordering lunch & a woman came up behind him & gave him a big squeeze, he nearly died, it was Di & Tom that we met on our travels in Darwin & visited in S.A. Well we had a great afternoon catching up on all the goss & having a few drinks, with a band playing in the background. There was a beautiful Jade Tree with the most brilliant blooms ... read more

The "Bloomfield Track" was a briliant scenic drive from Cooktown to Cape Tribulation. It is a 4x4 track and a great short cut. It was well graded but very very steep and windy. Lots of things to stop and look at on the way. A very big crocodile sunning itself on the bank of the Daintree River (sorry no photo, couldn't stop). The Bloomfield Falls which are just before you cross the river are worth the walk to look at. Peter got there way ahead of me as he dosen't seem to notice the rocks etc that you have to scramble over. If you look closely he is actually in the photo...just a long way away. River is now easy to cross as it has a concrete causeway, apparently it used to be a tricky crossing ... read more

The drive from Cairns to Port Douglas ranks as one of the great drives of Australia. Once you escape the roundabouts of Cairns, the road turns into this winding, coast hugging, scenic beauty. Every so often you get a visage of an idyllic beach that only hippies and surfies dare to camp along. Would love to come back here with a convertible Grande Tourer vehicle to wind through the curves and drink in the excitement. Port Douglas is a resort town, and a breath of fresh air. Anthony smiled as he said it reminded him of the markets and shopping strips of Balmain. We treated ourselves to the best coffee of the trip thus far (go to Café Ecco – it’s calling you). The Sunday markets were fun and were really a joy to walk amongst ... read more

G'day guys! I am still having a ball here in Australia - can't believe I'm half-way through the trip already! I wanted to post some photos today, but the internet access here is free, but limited and they don't allow uploading stuff! Ah well... Today we went into the Daintree rainforest. We did a couple of guided walks on the forest floor, which was great. The guide pointed out all the poisoness plants, etc and I got a few shots of insects and lizards. then we had a cruise up the daintree river, where we saw some crocodiles on the bank - I got some great photos of Nelson, the big male croc, sleeping on the bank! Plus a couple of females and a little hatchling. We had lunch in a tree house in the forest, ... read more

Hello again!! We stayed in Cape Tribulation, which is where the jungle is, for two nights. We were originally supposed to be staying in tents in Jungle Lodge but 'unfortunately' these were closed for the season so we ended up being upgraded to lodges which we were quite happy about. The resort had a pool, restaurant and shop with other lodges and hotels nearby. This was supposed to be an area full of cassowarys, however we didn't see any and just saw lots of cassowary signs instead! Looks like the only one we will see is the one we saw at the zoo! To be honest I don't think any of us would be too keen on seeing a cassowary up close in the wild!! On our way, we stopped at Mossman Gorge for a walk ... read more

The car is packed, have found someone as a travelmate, a french girl with a 6,6feet Surfboard. Well, lets see how I get all her stuff in the car. We've planned to go to Cape Tribulation first, depending on how the roads are. Many of them getting floodet at the moment, we have rain here everyday. After the north trip, we're goung south, having several stops on the way. I'm happy to get startet, have been at "Aunty Lindas" for 2 weeks now, so I wanna hit the road now!... read more

Well, once again we woke up to rain but we weren't going to let that stop us. We piled into the car and headed on our way further north. We encountered some water on the road from all the rain in the area and hoped it wasn't a sign to come that the roads were flooded and we'd have to turn around. We continued on our way and by the time we got to the ferry terminal where you have to take a barge ferry across the river to get up into the Daintree/Cape trib area the rain was pouring down. The lady informed us that she hadn't heard anything about flooded roads and the ferry was still operating. So, we crossed the big brown river and continued on our way. The rain would let up ... read more

When Captain Cook sailed by this stretch of coastline in 1770 he named it Cape Tribulation, looking at it from a non seafaring perspective in all it's tranquil beauty it's the last name you'd give it. Far more jubilation than tribulation. To be fair to Captain Cook he had sailed thousands of miles around the globe to reach a perilously rocky shoreline with no safe harbours and was greeted by very hostile locals. The story was very different for us. We meandered up the Captain Cook highway calling in at the rather swanky town of Port Douglas for brunch. The dramatically beautiful coastal drive from here up to Mosman gave us stunning panoramas along the coral coast. A sidetrack to Mosman Gorge gave Dad his first taste of the tropical rainforest, a surging river cutting through ... read more

Our main aim for the day was to get to Cape Tribulation. We made a whistle stop tour of some towns on the way and we were soon boarding the cable ferry. There were signs warning us of recent Croc sightings so were pleased that we were not aloud to get out of the van. Reaching the other side we were suddenly surrounded by rainforest. We were on a narrow and winding road driving up and down hills with a sheer drop into the dense forest on one side. If someone were to drop off the edge then no one would ever know as the forest would swallow them forever. We took it very easy. We stopped at a look out point and the views were just stunning. Wandering through the rainforest it had a strange ... read more

Northwards to Cairns Heading up the Bruce highway the weather became very wet. At times the rain was lashing down. We left Cyril and Kasia and did a detour through some beautifully green countryside, long straight roads with little traffic. Farms set in valleys, cows, cultivated fields, small towns and villages. We carried on and on, stopping for lunch and filling up with fuel. Eventually we realised that reaching Townsville was out of the question and it was getting late, the rain was torrential and we were tired, so we decided wherever the next place to stay was, we were stopping. It was a caravan/camping site at clevedon, a tiny strip of development along the side of an inlet and a massive area of water. This was a fishing resort of sorts, and the people were ... read more
