We decided to get the minibus to Pai despite being told that it was an incredibly windy road, (762 corners to go round from Chiang Mai.) I took a Kwell to try to ward off any travel sickness and when the minibus finally arrived, 6 of us from Julie’s guesthouse piled in to the already half full bus. I sat next to a couple at the back of the bus both of whom were called Kate, and Matt sat in front of me on the only other seat. The luggage was precariously positioned behind our back seats and loaded right [View Full Entry]

Ok, so we actually did something in advance for a change, (we usually just rock up.) When we were leaving Bangkok to go to Ayutthaya we booked a sleeper train (second class train, fan and windows for air) to transport us to Chiang Mai from Lopburi the following evening. Now, for those of you who have said that you feel jealous of us being here, this should make you feel much better. We managed to get onto the train at the right carriage thanks to some helpful Thai people at the station and a guy checked our tickets then showed [View Full Entry]

So as I mentioned at the end of our previous blog, we felt that we’d probably spent a little too long in Bangkok and so it was time to start snaking our way north to see what other delights (and frustrations) Thailand has to offer ... first stop, Ayutthaya - an ancient old city just to the north of Thailand filled with temples and religious monuments. After discussions with the really helpful staff at Bangkok train station and a last minute tweaking to our timetable due to some sleeper trains being fully booked, we got tickets sorted to head to Ayutthaya [View Full Entry]

We needed to go back to Bangkok before heading north, so thought we’d stop in Bangkok again on the way and get some culture down us. This of course led us to spending the first day back undertaking every woman’s favourite pastime - shopping. Before you can head from Koh San Road to the commercial district you have to deal with bartering with tuk-tuk drivers and taxi drivers, all intent on prising as much money out of your wallet at possible. Every tuk-tuk driver (and I do mean every single one of them) would only take us if we made a [View Full Entry]

We decided to head out to Kanchanaburi, a couple of hours west of Bangkok to experience a different part of Thailand. We successfully tackled Thai public transport by hailing a taxi (putting hand out, palm down and moving right and left over and over) very informative darling then worked out how to buy a bus ticket in the bus station but found that we were stared at a lot! I couldn’t understand why people turned to look at us but Matt pointed out that it was probably because we are actually the whitest people in Asia it seems. We are definitely [View Full Entry]

Tough life

Hello everybody, and sawadee from Thailand!!! Apologies for the delay in getting some blog-action on the go, it’s actually a lot harder than we expected to get some down time to do little admin jobs like sort out blogs/laundry/money etc as there’s so much to do all of the time! So we arrived safe and sound with a few minor transport hiccups along the way, unexpectedly though all the problems were in England rather than Thailand ... as our train from Birmingham to London came to a grinding halt at Watford Junction and we learnt that there had not only been [View Full Entry]

The serious business of counting down the days until we leave has now begun in earnest, with this time next week being d-day for flying out of the UK to start our trip in Bangkok. Our final weeks at work have been relatively relaxed affairs, speak for yourself Matt, I've had loads to do and your weeks at work are always relaxed affairs unlike mine, and promise to continue in this vain for the remaining two days of 9-5 life, before spending our final few pre-trip days in Leicester and Birmingham saying goodbye to assorted relatives and enduring many hours worrying [View Full Entry]

Ok, so it's taken us a MASSIVELY long time to get around to blogging anything about our honeymoon - which doesn't bode well for attempting to keep a blog going while we're on the road for six and a half months. But better late than never eh? Well, following 18 months of planning, our wedding day came and went and I can honestly say that it was the most magical and perfect day for us both and hopefully everyone who shared it with us. I have never worn such an amazing, beautiful dress in my life nor have I ever felt [View Full Entry]
