Update is that I left the humidity of Darwin and got on the famous 'Ghan' Train which let us have a few hours in Katherine, very hot place, spent 3 hours sheltering in a shopping centre. Cool sight was in the nighttime going through the remote bush with fires allround (controlled of course) surreal sight. Arrived in Alice Springs, have found one of those perfect hostels, 'Alice's Secret' no spoilt brat school leavers here! Just chilled friendly people. Spent 2 nights at Alice's attending to my affairs inc the heartbreaking 'chuck out' as my accumulation has exceeded what I can be bothered to carry. Then last Thursday set off through the McDonnel Ranges and out towards Uluru (Ayers Rock). Got a 'distant' sunset to start with, then camped out near the ultra commercial Ayers Rock Resort. ... read more

We messed up with Alice Springs when we scheduled our itinerary. Given that the Uluru and Kings Canyon tour would take the whole of three days (see ), it left only a few hours each side of it to look round Alice Springs. Unlike Darwin (see ) that was no where near enough time, sadly. When we first arrived it was starting to get late in the afternoon and most of the key places were closed or closing. We went though the Todd Street Mall and checked out a few shops. We then climbed Anzac Hill, where we had timed it perfectly for the sunset. We also managed to see Adelaide House, the Old Court House and the Stuart Town Gaol, albeit from the outside only as they were closed. We would need to cover a ... read more

The last blog was written in Douglas Daly as we prepared to return home for Lib’s 50th in Bathurst. We had a great time catching up with Lib and Greg - they had just returned from Turkey so had lots to tell us. We have put Turkey on our list for future travels. All the adult members of the family except Michael, Leigh & Ryan, made it up to Bathurst for the party so a great time was had by all. Lib loved having everyone there and especially enjoyed showing off her new garden. We stayed an extra few days and in that time saw the fountain frozen over, twice. Just a tad cold in Bathurst. Got back to Sydney in time to have a 22nd birthday lunch with Ryan. It was just great seeing him ... read more

Hello again! Unfortunately there will be no photos on this blog as we're in an internet cafe in Alice Springs at the mo and didn't bring anything with us! We've just come back from our 3 day Uluru "tour" and it was absolutely amazing. We slept out under the stars in Swags and it was freezing cold but totally worth it. Uluru was so amazing and our tour guide was excellent so we found out lots of interesting stories about Aborigonal culture etc. We got up for sunrise every day and also saw sunset over Uluru which was spectacular, we have lots and lots of piccies to show you all the amazing colours. We also did a base walk around Uluru which took about 2 hours and saw all the huge holes and cracks which all ... read more

We booked in for a week at the caravan park. On Saturday we walked to the Alice Springs Show - what a dustbowl! I introduced Wes to Dagwood Dogs, and he was not impressed. Come to think of it neither was I - I can’t believe I used to like these in my distant youth. For our English rellies, these are thickly battered savaloys on a stick which is stuck into a ‘bucket’ of tomato sauce and served. We checked out the animal pavilions, the craft pavilions etc, but not much to see really. Lots of Blackfellas, with questionable personal hygiene. And no, use of the word Blackfellas is not politically incorrect here - they call themselves ‘Blackfellas’ and they call us ‘Whitefellas’ - makes sense to me. Bought a Bertie Beetle showbag and low and ... read more

Brace yourself for a long one - I'm afraid I've been out of contact for a couple of weeks so have a bit to catch up on. I'll try to keep it to the highlights so that I don't bore you all too much..... So I think on my last blog I was headed to Fiji where I think I may have come down with Fiji fever. Apparently it's quite common around the South Pacific - you just get drawn in to the laid back beaching lifestyle and find it very hard to leave. Some of the guys that were there (almost all English) had been there for weeks and showed no signs of moving on. I arrived in Nadi (which is the jump off point for most of the islands) and Jo Dadds and Leah ... read more

It was 2004. Coldplay were about to play a sell-out gig at Rio's Maracana stadium when lead guitarist, Jonny Buckland, fell and broke his wrist. There was no way he could play. Coldplay, with just hours to go until they were due on stage, had no idea what to do. Thankfully, Chris Martin's wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, remembered a one-night stand she had with me years before. Gwyn's a bit of a health freak so instead of smoking cigarettes in out post-coital malaise, we ate apples. I remember saying how I thought Apple would make a nice name for a child. Not sure if she was listening though. She obviously did hear me however when I said I was a fantastic guitarist. Chris rang me and I agreed to fill in for Jonny. I learned the songs ... read more

Day 12 Uluru to Kings Canyon We awoke around 7.30am and got up shortly after. After breakfast, we completed the packing and left Ayers Rock Resort around 10am. We drove straight through to Kings Creek Station, arriving around 1pm. The changes in the landscape were very noticeable, with a lot more trees and denser undergrowth as we moved closer to Kings Canyon. After having lunch, we checked out the facilities and the fuel prices and at $185.99 lt, we decided to push onto Kings Canyon Resort. On our arrival at 2.30pm, we were informed there were no powered sites until tomorrow. We pondered returning to Kings Creek Station, but decided to take a non-powered for the first night and move to a powered site for the remaining two nights we booked. By 4.15 we were set ... read more

Well..we last left you with the thought of our 15 hour coach journey to Alice Springs (ahh!) Turns out that the tour we were about to embark on was well worth the journey!!! We had a couple of days in Alice Springs before the tour started so, in true form, we spent them 'pottering' around and exploring. We really liked Alice Springs. It was quite different to how we had both imagined it. We thought it would be a really small town, literally just used as a base to start Uluru trips etc but it was really nice and had a good feel to it. Our tour was due to start on the Sunday (2nd July - yes we really are that far behind with our blogs!!!) To be honest we were a little sceptical about ... read more
