Today was a really funny day- we visited the Happy Hippie town of Nimbin. We were supposed to be picked up for our day trip there at 10:20, at about 10:55 a rainbow painted mini-bus rolled into our driveway. We jumped aboard and met Ivan, our South African tour guide who clearly was living on Nimbin time. We drove the about hour to Nimbin, and on the way he played lots of good music, and told us a bit of the history of Nimbin. During the Vietnam war, a lot of Australians avoiding the draft went in from the coast and set up communes of sorts. These groups decided to have a week long anti-war festival which was called the Aquarius Festival. It was full of hippies and lots of drugs, and both have never really ... read more

Welcome all to Nimbin! Happy Birthday Kasia!! After an hour-long ride through the beautiful countryside and "hills" of northern New South Wales, we arrived. Canadians, Americans, Swiss, Frenchies, Brits, Aussies and Germans. We were all there for the same reason. WEED COOKIES!!! This is a place where anyone can buy their dope of choice as soon as they get off the bus! I found this out, realistically, about 10 seconds after I jumped off the "GrassHopper", getting mauled by 3 Aussie homies with a "Yo-Yo, want some weed?" "Nah, man", I replied. "Me not want none of that!" Little did they know, I was heading to the same place they bought their stash. I can't tell you how we found out about this place, nor can I show you any pictures of it. If I did ... read more

This blog failed to publsh for some reason so I'm trying again. We're travelling slowly up the east coast trying to find some sun. Coff's Harbour was wet most of the time so we didn't see the best of it and went to the cinema and bowling to pas the time. I was as useless at bowling as I normally am; got one strike only, although twice I did manage to get all skittles down on the second ball having sent the first ball down the side channel. Kev beat me once, thrashed me twice and I beat him in the last game. On Sunday we moved onto Byron Bay via Grafton, a sleepy mainly 19th century town with an art gallery housing a pleasant restaurant. The rain held off till the afternoon so after setting ... read more

Me da la sensacion ... read more

The Drive to Nimbin in itself was an adventurous one and we got lost too! It was just like driving the back roads through the Yorkshire Dales. So like I said in my last entry Nimbin is renowned for one thing….marijuana. It has to be one of the funniest places we have been to so far. I don’t think I spoke to one person that wasn’t stoned. Even a little boy of around 10 years old who asked us if we wanted to buy any looked stoned!! Ok Mum this is where you stop reading. Yeap we got stoned, well we bought it and took it away with us. There was no way I was driving those roads after smoking and we didn’t fancy spending the night, the place was too nuts. So we hit the ... read more

Now this was a day out i can say, going to nimbin is like going back in time to some sort of crazy circus, theres hippies everywhere that seem to have been stuck in a time warp from when the mardie grass festivals started. I did see some strange characters i can say, the bus we went on was like being on a rollercoaster ride going up and down the hills with bob marley in the background. We went to some crazy persons house and returned with a jack fruit (curtesy of hannah...they are hugh fruits for those of you that dont know about the size of a water melon) I can honestly say nimbin has the best chips ever...that good we went back a second time but the place was closed and me and hannah ... read more

Nimbin.....let's see......Nimbin.....how to describe Nimbin........OK, picture Amsterdam but take away the buildings, waterways, red light district, nightclubs, hedonism, showers/sanitation/anything remotely clean and what are you left with??? You got it - pot. Nimbin is a wide spot in the road that hosted a hippy festival 30 years ago and I guess some people were too stoned to remember how to get home, so they just stayed. Today it exists for just two reasons: 1) to allow hippies/hobos to sleep in the streets while "championing" the great cause of legalizing marijuana use through their "creation" of "art" (i.e. getting stoned and fiddling with the garbage that cannot be removed from the town and putting a bunch of pro-weed slogans on t-shirts); and 2) to sell pot to tourists. So naturally I went. This town looks like ... read more

Went on a day tour to Nimbin today. Our bus was psychadelic on the outside and powered by hemp oil. That's just a tiny insight into what the tour was like! We were driven by an old hippy- literally! We listened to reggae the whole way there. Nimbin consists of cannabis shops, lots of! Basically, hippies live there, and they protest every year to allow people to smoke cannabis. So thats what they do in Nimbin. There's nothing else to it! Off to Brisbane tonight, looking forward to it, although i do love Byron Bay still! Ah well! No time to be getting attached! Bye! x... read more

Following the late arrival I decided to take a day trip to Nimbin as I had been told in sydney that it is worth visiting. I booked the trip at 9:30 and the coach departed from the arts factory hostel at 10am. A full coach of 30. Nimbin is the hippy area of Aus. On the way up the bus driver Dougie played various types of music we stopped at a pub which was the only building in the village. We then went into Nimbin he advised us to take a look at the muesuem and if anyone was going to buy from the dealers if they heard a shout of taxi the deal would be stopped for a few minutes until the police drove by. A few of the dutch guys said they bought. It ... read more
