Our time in Nimbin was out of this world.. This place is something else - when we stepped off the shuttle it was like we entered a whole different way of living that we didn't even know existed. This little hippy town was full of crazzy people who had definitely been on drugs their whole lives.. It was pretty entertaining let me tell you.. when we arrived at the hostel they checked us in and instead of telling us about things to do in the area which is what most hostels do they informed us on where and where not to buy weed.. haha This hostel was more like a resort for stoners... It had a really nice outdoor kitchen and an amazing tropical pool surrounded by palm trees with a view of the mountains.. it ... read more

I’m not sure where to begin on this one. Despite all the stories I had heard about this place, nothing could prepare me for the day’s events. We started at 10am at the corner across from my hostel in from of Cheeky Monkey’s (nightclub). I was booked to go on Jim’s Alternative Tour to Nimbin Australia. I had a free voucher for the 35 dollar tour so I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Like I’ve said in previous blog entries, “free” is music to my ears. So Jim came rolling up about 5 after ten in his 36 seat tour bus. I forgot to take a photograph of the bus but I’ll try and get one tomorrow when he comes by to pick up the next curious travelers. It was painted with rainbow colored stripes. ... read more

No one here is an undercover cop? No? Ok then, I'll begin "No one here is an undercover cop? No? Ok then, I'll begin" The tone of day was set from the offset. "Theres a few things you need to know. Not everything that goes on in Nimbin is legal. Marijuana is illegal in New South Wales. So there - I've warned you, and I'm covered" said the driver of our 'Grasshoppers' tour bus. A reggae cover of Pink Floyds stoner friendly Dark Side Of The Moon album was playing in the background, highlighting how this tour was one for all of the senses. Having gotten detailed briefings on how to avoid having a bad trip, how to avoid getting arrested, and the polite way to pick shrooms (Magic Mushrooms) we finally rolled into Oz's unofficial ... read more

Nimbin & Nightcap National Park Nerves. Clench. Anxiety. To begin all over again - does it ever get any easier? I remember this when in India - spending hours planning what to do and then hours looking for the perfect camping spot. All about feeling lost or conversely, feeling at home wherever I go. Something about me and country no through roads. My being must follow them to the end, just to see where they are no through to… Looking for tonight’s camping place, up to Mt Nardi and back, around the main street and around again. Outside a caravan park, it’s time to move on miss. Nowhere within the whole of Byron shire is it permissible to sleep in your vehicle over night. Of course we all do it anyway. Whilst I see the rationalisation ... read more

Got woken up by some loud annoying American girl telling Gerry about how she stayed in a haunted hostel in Tasmania...!! Good grief. We decided to go to Nimbin, the hippie capital of NSW, on the "Happy Bus" with a dreadlocked driver called Fred who had great banter... First stop was at Nightcap National Park to see the Minyon Falls - quite impressive height-wise but not water-wise as they were barely more than a trickle! Still, the 'hinterland' that we drove through to Nimbin was absolutely beautiful. Nimbin itself is one long road of shops selling crystals, hemp clothing and weed. We sat in a cafe and chilled out and visited the 'museum' which is basically a history of the movement to legalise pot. Fred took us to meet a guy called Kenn who was completely ... read more

life in oz is great. i just started my second semester of public health this week. as it turns out, i AM a bit of a whiz in statistics (distinction mark first term), and now i'm on track to become an epidemiologist (disease detective!) i'm concocting up a plan for my dissertation at the moment. i think it is going to involve 6 months in vanuatu, east timor, or brazil! i spent my last week of winter break working on a farm in nimbin. nimbin is a crazy town. you can buy ganjcookies and cakes in the street, smoke dope in the cafe, and chill with mad hippies at sunday market. you can also pick up an international array of traveling men... the highlight of my trip was staying up the entire night of the full ... read more

After heading north to Byron Bay I found the place too touristy for my liking. Yeh its good if you are about 19 and just enjoy boozing all night every night but i was looking for more natural surroundings so i headed to Nimbin which is about 70 km north of Byron. Nimbin is the only town in the whole of Australia where it is actually ok to smoke marijuana in public cafes and streets however not in the pub! It is actually still illegal to buy and smoke but due to the festival of aquarius in 1973 ever since the police have had no power over the people to stop them smoking away... Apart from the haze that is constantly engulfing the town, the surroundings are quite amazing with mountains on either side and ... read more
