A short trip of 5 nights with all the family and Ginger via the inland Southern Highlands route. Highlights: The holiday house "River Bliss" which had an amazing back verandah high up and looking out at trees and a gentle meandering river. http://www.stayz.com.au/accommodation/nsw/south-coast/kangaroo-valley/12067 Short walks from the house_ along the road past the Hampden Bridge in to the countryside and down by the river on the way to town. The little town with lolly shops and old buildings such as The Bank (1891) cafe and an old butcher shop. Fudge and coffee at the bank cafe A short drive to Fitzroy Falls with beautiful views of a valley and some very interesting trees. url=http://www.visitnsw.com/destinations/country-nsw/southern-highlands/fitzroy-falls/att... read more

When driving through Kangaroo Valley recently I noticed that the river either side of the main bridge north of the town looked beautiful, and very intriguing. Just before the bridge is a sign advertising Kayak and Canoe hire, therefore I decided it would be a great place to come back at the weekend, as long as the weather was good. Saturday came around and the weather was ideal, not quite too hot, but beautiful clear blue skies. After stopping in town to buy some sweets for the trip we were off to the Kayak hire shop. We opted for a double Kayak, and after being told roughly where to stop down the river to be collected 5k later, we were off. The scenery was beautiful, as I had expected, and it was quite a relaxing start ... read more

A quest was due. A mission. A journey. We set ourselves goals in life. Big goals: being generally happy 78% of the time, having children, traversing across all continents of the globe. And we set ourselves wee goals: making a bank shot off of the sink with a paper towel, eating a large pizza by yourself without throwing up, or seeing how long you can drive your car without pressing the brakes. These goals are good..necessary I would say. And today, I focus on both. Goal 1 Wombats As stated on the www - "They are not commonly seen, but leave ample evidence of their passage...leaving distinctive cubic faeces" I had allowed cubic faeces to go unwarranted and unjustified for too long in my life, I would not take it this weekend. It was time to ... read more

9 - 10 February 2011 From Jervis we headed back up to Kangaroo Valley for two nights where we stayed at a huge camp ground at Bendeela right on Lake Yarrunga. It was a great campground with wombats wandering around all through the daylight hours as well as the night. We were able to get right up close to some of them - such gorgeous animals, although I wouldn't want to meet one in a dark alley... Whilst staying at Bendeela we checked out the Fitzroy and Belmont Falls as well as Robertson. Also visited the old timber shop in the town of Kangaroo Valley (something I've always wanted to do) - amazing stuff and we were surprised to see quite a bit of huon pine in there. Really enjoyed Bendeela, and really looking forward to ... read more

Doing the Wombat Walk There it was again. I sat up abruptly causing the air mattress to sink dangerously earthwards, snatched up the headlight torch and attempted to shine it through the pvc tent-window. Amidst the reflected light and turned to a certain angle I could see a large wide-bottomed outline scruffling along the ground. A hairy wombat negotiating his way amongst the guy ropes, the tent shuddering every time he knocked into something he was sure had not been there during the previous night's foraging. And so it was.. And so it is at Bundeela. Wombat heaven. Wombat haven. Paddling along the Yarrunga Lake, the upper arm of the Kangaroo River meeting more canoes and and kayaks than I thought had ever been manufactured in Australia, we saw more wombat holes than hotels in Dubai. ... read more

Day 333 - Kangaroo Valley (Bendeela Reserve) For the first time in ages there was no need to rush this morning and we had ourselves an extended lie in. It's blissfully peaceful here, just the sound of the birds but other than that nothing else disturbed us. Everyone else must have been in the same frame of mind, it's the perfect spot to relax and there's a distinct lack of activity around the place. We popped out for a bit of exploration around the local area. Fitzroy Falls wasn’t far back up the huge hill so we went there first and wandered initially through the visitors centre. Here we caught a video showing the birth of a kangaroo, it was fascinating. Neither of us had thought about how a joey actually gets into the Mum’s pouch, ... read more

Day 332 - Orange to Kangaroo Valley We’re back on the road again! Thanks must go to Tony & Jane for inviting us to their lovely home. We’ve had a great time exploring Orange and its surrounds and of course it was lovely to catch up with them for one last time. The days are slipping away from us now and its not long before the doors of reality will be flung wide open, so with no further ado we get on our way. The map has been out several times over the last few days and yet we’re still not 100% sure where we’ll end up tonight! We’ve narrowed the options down to ‘somewhere between here and Melbourne’! Out of the window went Broken Hill & Coonabarabran - we would have had to rush things ... read more

On Sunday we headed from Jervis Bay to Kangaroo Valley, but decided to take a short detour to Berry and catch the Sunday morning markets along the way. The markets are held on the 1st Sunday of each month and were bustling. We re-stocked our honey and jam supplies and also bought some sweet corn. We also had gourmet sausage rolls for lunch followed by Dutch Poffertjes served with caramel and cream. Yum! We left Berry and drove to Bendeela camping and picnic ground set on the banks of the Kangaroo River. We arrived mid-afternoon as the last few lots of weekend campers were packing up to leave. It was a lovely grassed area with lots of space, although we had to dodge the duck and wombat scats and make sure we secured our food at ... read more

Wednesday - 15th January Another day in Sydney. Coffee on circular key then caught the ferry to Watsons Bay. Walked along Camp Cove and on to the peninsular by the light house looking out over the Tasman Sea- beautiful colours sea and spray. Weather glorious but stayed covered up today as rather too much sun yesterday. Arrived back at Watsons Cove and we had a fab lunch at Doyles overlooking the beach, ate local fish, flat head, barramundi and red snapper washed down by their own SB. Yum. Thursday - 16th January - Very over cast today and windy. Delayed canoe trip by one day so off to Sydney to do the bridge, inside the Opera house and the art gallery. Loved the art gallery lots of wonderful aboriginal art, had lunch at a yung chi ... read more

G'day everyone! It is great to hear from you all. It is amazing to think that another month has flown by! Since it is a monthly blog we have decided to treat you all with many photos and a prize for whoever answers the following question the best; "Over Dinner at Peter's in Kangaroo Valley, he went on for a very long time about how much he hated *?*?*, only for deaf Bobby (who hadnt heard) to proclaim how much she loved *?*?*. Who were they talking about"? Goodluck. Since writing last, we went on a ferry to Watson Bay for a great day trip. We did a massive coastal walk and the area had many deserted beaches as well as a lighthouse and fort (see pictures) which were lovely. The next day we went to ... read more
