Day 15, 26/9/11 Up at 5am to catch the Greyhound coach from Central Station (about a 20 - 30min walk from hostel) at 7am. It was a 7 hour drive up to Crescent Head and when we got there it was a proper camp site. The only thing I can think was different was we had 12 bed dorms instead of tents. They didn't waste any time and as soon as we got there we went through health and safety, how to surf and we were off on the waves for the afternoon; I couldn't stand up on many waves. Got talking to people over dinner, played Jenga and then went for a social evening around the campfire. Day 16, 27/9/11 My second day surfing and my first full day. Got woken at 7:30 and was ... read more

Well if only we could put our truck on cruise control and sit back and relax, because it wouldn't have any problem finding where we are going since it's one of our regular spots... We decided that we might as well head back up the coast and try and get a bit of surfing and relaxing in, so we left Shellharbour on Saturday and headed up towards one of our regular haunts, Crescent Head. We just happened to pick one of the hottest and busiest days to travel. It was 40+ degrees in parts of Western Sydney and around Newcastle it was 42.9 degrees. It was a scorcher! It took me awhile to get Brett to turn the air conditioning on in the truck, he was trying to save power for the fridge and blah blah ... read more

What Am I? Un-Australian? I used to keep a small notebook in my backpack, between my “interesting” Greek playing cards and my current novel, where I would write down the names of every interesting person I met while travelling. This started out as a practicality, as I am downright awful at remembering names. Seriously, if I don’t write down your name the instant you tell it to me, and sometimes even if I do, the syllables will simply bounce across the empty space that I’m certain lines my skull until they eventually fall out the other side. I think the real reason for this is that I’m far more interested in knowing something about you - where you’re from, what you do for fun, which common household smell most reminds you of Bangkok - than I ... read more

Days 1=10 Woy Woy, Frazier Beach, Newcastle, Port Stevens, Seal Rocks, Forester, Crowdy Head (2 days), Camden Heads, Port MacQuarie, Crescent Heads Yes, I'm still here, but there seem to be fewer internet cafes in towns where I stop. This will just be a quick update, as I've got to get some sleep for a longish paddle tomorrow. Day 1 to Frazier Beach I made good time (about 39 miles) without benefit of wind or currents, and felt good at the end of the day - so I got the mis-impression that things would go smoothly for a while. To Newcastle was easy (only about 20 miles), but there is a 20 mile bight following it, and with the predominant NEerlys, I decided to quit there - good move. Every day since then (except for one) ... read more

I survived Mojo Surf Camp! I am very VERY sore though & sunburned, even though I was wearing a wet suit?? Oh well... Here are some pictures! I apologize for not actually having one of me on the surfboard, I didn't want to risk ruining the camera (3 more were ruined by sand this weekend). Enjoy the pics! Let me know if you have any questions though!... read more

Sorry for the delay in updating the blog, been having a few technical difficulties… The month of January has gone by pretty quick with some really hot weather, and we have for the most part stayed in Wollongong at Brett’s Aunt’s house, until last week when we decided it was time to get back in our caravan as it had been quite awhile. We had been sticking around Wollongong because Brett’s sister, Megan and her boyfriend Dusty are coming over to get married on February 14th, so we have been doing some wedding coordinating stuff for them since they are in living in South Korea. We were beginning to think we could maybe take up wedding planning as a side business. But don’t think so… Since Meg and Dusty are coming on February 1st, then Brett’s ... read more

We have spent the last few weeks in Wollongong doing a bit of surfing (Brett), trips to the doctor for my broken toe (Kara), and checking things out in Sydney and the northern beaches area where we have never been. And they are some amazing beaches, and close enough to the CBD of Sydney, yet parts of the it feel like you could be hundreds of miles away. You can either get their by a ferry from Manly Beach or drive across the Harbour Bridge. There were some amazing houses, with the most amazing views. Gotta start buying those lotto tickets! Think it could be definately be a spot to add to the places to live. Since we had a week in between when Brett has to be down in Melbourne for another skatepark, we decided that ... read more

Fourteen of us from the AustraLearn group booked a weekend surfing trip to Crescent Head, Australia. It was one of the most incredible weekends I've ever had! We left Friday early afternoon for the six hour drive North. Saturday morning, when we woke up at 7:30, a few other girls and I went to the beach and saw whales just off the coast. Saturday, we had two surfing lessons and Sunday one more. I was able to get up multiple times, but it made me realize that I need to get in shape and start strengthening my arms. I became exhausted fairly quickly. The first lesson was perfect for learning. Although, there were riptides and strong currents, the instructors explained everything and it made me feel a lot more comfortable. The second lesson on Saturday the ... read more

Ok, so now we had the van and we were truckin’. What a feeling….wind in your hair… moaning in your ears. We had just 7 days to get to Brisbane in order to meet Duncan and Lisa at the airport. That was nearly 1000km to cover, but to try and enjoying exploring the coastline too. We left Penrith on Monday afternoon stopping for supplies at Woolworths - yes, it’s kind of like Asda over here, only the bread is not as good and everything is the same price or more expensive than home. Oh, and of course, they don’t sell alcohol in supermarkets, you have to go to a separate ‘bottle shop’ or ‘liquor store’ - how inconvenient? Anyway all loaded with supplies, we aimed for the North Sydney beaches that have surfing folklore attached. On ... read more
