We left Sydney on the greyhound destined for Canberra. A lot of people had told us not to bother with Canberra but we wanted to break up the journey to Melbourne so we decided to give it a go! It is a planned city so very easy to navigate around. We went to the Parliament buildings on Capitol Hill - going into the House of Representatives and the House of Speakers. We also went onto the roof for a great view of Canberra. Australia's coat of arms features a kangaroo and an Emu apparently because these are the only native animals that cannot walk backwards so the country's mantra would be to 'always go forward'!! (Dad - Much like Camelot - you should suggest this logo to them at the next meeting!!). This was told to ... read more

Lucky for Lorenza and I we have no problems deciding whose family to spend Christmas with each year. Lorenza's folks are originally from Holland and celebrate on Christmas Eve, whereas Rob's family follow the more Anglo-Aussie tradition of celebrating on Christmas Day. So, Christmas Eve we found our way to Bowral and celebrated at Manuela's place (Lorenza's sister), then on Christmas Day we continued a few hours down the Hume and Federal Highways to Rob's brothers place. Both celebrations consisted of the usual over indulging in food and wine, gift giving and the that fine Aussie tradition of a game of backyard cricket with the kids (and bigger kids like Rob, etc.).... read more

Hi All, We hope this blog finds you well and that you have had a great 2007! We are sorry we have not been in touch as often as we would like. We have not been utilising the travelblog as much since we are no longer travelling!! Regardless, we wanted to take this opportunity to say hi, give you a quick update on us, and wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year. Where to start......? This year has flown by for us. We have now been home from the UK for 8 months. We spent our first 2 or so months back on the Gold Coast staying with Justin's family, catching up with mates, and enjoying the sun and the beach. During this time Rach was Maid of Honour for Nicole and ... read more

Up before dawn, and standing in a field in the dark, but not for boot camp this time - we were off on a dawn balloon flight over Canberra, something we'd been promising ourselves we'd do while we are here, and Sandra's Mum's Christmas present. The weather wasn't great (it's not proving to be a good summer here - very grey and wet. At least we feel at home!), but the view was still amazing. And it was very peaceful, drifting above the lake. We landed, with only a relatively minor bump, in a field full of bemused sheep, and then it was back to the Hyatt for early morning champagne.... read more

In a moment of weakness, Sandra agreed to enter a triathlon with some work colleagues. Actually it was just a bit of a triathlon - a team event, with each team member completing just one leg, so not a real triathlon at all. It was (very) hot - but great fun. We didn't win (!), but didn't lose either. Maybe there's time for a proper triathlon after Christmas...!... read more

Well that was Canberra…????? Many describe it as a souless city and I can see why, it is a lot like Milton Keynes… Completely man made and lacking in substance… At some time early last century the Ozzy government decided they needed a more central capital city… so they thought I know lets put one here… in the middle of nowhere… it takes hours to get there… and hours to get out….We were only going cos we needed to get our visa’s, but other wise we wouldn’t have gone near the place… I booked a motor Village over the net, on the website it looked huge… it wasn’t,!!! I think we have been spoilt in New Zealand cos the hotels here just aren’t as good…. This was 2 poxy rooms with a living dinning kitchen ... read more

... read more

To the Nation's Capital! So at some point in between monorail-ing and visiting Darling Harbour, we decided to take a little trip to Canberra , the capital city of Australia. Danae had a good friend in the city, studying at the Australian National University (ANU). We awoke bright and early on Friday the 24th to catch our bus to Canberra. Rule #1 of booking buses: never let the blonde do the booking. We arrived at Sydney Central for our 7AM bus, only to find that there was no 7AM bus. When we called the bus company we found out that there was a mix-up and the 7AM bus was TO Sydney. We had made bookings in reverse. I pleaded ignorance in my Canadian accent, and she agreed to switch our reservations. So we headed back to ... read more

Well time is flying by now! I can't beleive how quick the time is going. I remember starting off my count down at day 99 and I remember thinking is so far away. Now look at it - WOW!! Not a lot to get done now, just change my bills over notify my banks, get a debt card etc... Must remember to pack the ole passport! This is my nightmare, getting all the way to sydney airport and realising that I have left my passport on my counter 400kms away!! OMG I would just die!! Have changed my mind about the backpack. My back has been giving me so much grief over the last 2 weeks, that I am really worried about how its going to hold up. Especially after a 12 hour flight, then having ... read more
