Dafne - Dafne G

Dafne G This blog was created when I was 21 years old and headed to Perth, Western Australia on a study abroad programme. I studied for 1 year at Murdoch University, completing my 3rd year of Environment and Resource Studies and Political Science on the sandy shores of WA. You can see some of the highlights of this trip here. Unfortunately I got bogged down in school work and other things, so the story ends 3 months shy of my actual return. If you want to see pictures from the Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania, and more - let me know! They exist, they're just not here.

I'm back in my hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada now, but the travel bug is still itching...

My next planned trip is to Ireland this December to travel a bit and then attend the World University Debating Championships...

They have tracking devices on them which measure air pollution in cities! Isn't that a good idea?
My life upon my return from the east coast was not very exciting. Mostly I was in the library doing school work and listening to lectures I'd missed. I'll list some of the exciting things I did in between my library lock-down. Infusion Team Dinner Friday the 14th was our end-of-season team dinner. It was nice seeing everyone again, although there was general shock that Danae had lost her skates. Freo with Mayumi Waaay back before I left for the east coast, I met a Japanese girl named Mayumi. Well she was about to go back to Japan when I got [View Full Entry]

Ok I've got a lot to say here but I'll probably rely on the pictures to do most of the talking in the interest of not boring you all...I've got a crazy game of catch-up to play in this blog but hopefully now that exams are done I'll be successful! Botanical Gardens and a random trip to Monash Uni On the 3rd, Danae and I decided to visit the Melbourne botanical gardens. It had been a 'thing' in Sydney that we always arrived at the botanical gardens just after they closed, so we wanted to make sure we saw these ones! [View Full Entry]

Off on an adventure! Early on the 1st, Danae, Dana, and I headed off to see the Great Ocean Road, a scenic road along the south coast of Victoria. It is the most scenic road in all of Australia, and is a very popular tourist destination. We rented a car for the trip, so we could go along at our own pace. Some random stops along the way: Geelong, so Dana could have her picture taken outside the Ford plant (apparently she loves Ford). We also hit up Torquay to see the surfers and browse through THE HOME of surfing gear [View Full Entry]

11 Hours on a Train Thursday, August 30th was spent on a train. For 11 hours, Danae and I headed through the farmland of central New South Wales and into Victoria, the state just south of NSW. We saw many sheep and an endless supply of rolling hills. And we learned about some interesting town names, such as my favourite, The Rock. Highlight of the trip: the staff thinking we were tourists. Well I guess we were but like they thought we were fresh off the plane tourists or something. And they thought Danae was foreign, which was extra funny. One [View Full Entry]

Fair Dinkum Night! Monday night, upon our return to Sydney, Danae and I had some exciting plans. For Monday night was Sydney Central YHA's "Fair Dinkum Night"! Danae (being the tacky tourist that she is) decided we just had to experience this truly Aussie night (note: Danae is Australian). And it was pretty good, for $3 you got a hot dog AND a beer. After that fun time, we decided enough was enough and we were going to have a PROPER night out in Sydney. So we got all dressed up and headed to a random pub called "The 3 Monkeys" [View Full Entry]

The Blue Mountains are a mountain range just an hour outside of Sydney. On August 27th, Danae and I headed for a little day trip to visit them. We were picked up in the morning by our tour company and we were on our way! Our first stop was a random park where we could "see kangaroos". This is the funny thing about taking tours in Australia - they ALL have a part where you get to see kangaroos. And after you've done a few of these tours, the novelty REALLY wears off. Especially after you've been out in the outback [View Full Entry]

He was awesome! We gave him some money, and I have a video.
So on the 25th we returned to Sydney, and I have no record of what we actually did that evening. BUT I'm pretty sure that was "movie night" at our hostel. The original plan was to show the terrible Eddie Murphy film, "Norbit", but while Danae and I were riding the lift they made the exciting announcement that the movie was being change to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We shared a MASSIVE high five which may have slightly scared the random guy in the lift with us. And then we went to movie night, far too excited. But there was free [View Full Entry]

To the Nation's Capital! So at some point in between monorail-ing and visiting Darling Harbour, we decided to take a little trip to Canberra , the capital city of Australia. Danae had a good friend in the city, studying at the Australian National University (ANU). We awoke bright and early on Friday the 24th to catch our bus to Canberra. Rule #1 of booking buses: never let the blonde do the booking. We arrived at Sydney Central for our 7AM bus, only to find that there was no 7AM bus. When we called the bus company we found out that there [View Full Entry]

Greyhound to Sydney On Tuesday morning, Danae and I headed back into Newcastle to catch the Greyhound bus down to Sydney. I had told Danae of my plans to travel after Nationals, and she decided she would come along with me. So, for three weeks, I had the company of a rather wacky Australian who often turned out to be a much tackier tourist than myself. It was good times... The ride was 2 and a half hours through the pretty New South Wales landscape. We had loads of food with us, since everyone had given us their leftover food from [View Full Entry]

Here's my run-down of Nationals. The best stories are in the pictures, though, so be sure to look through those... Tuesday - The Departure I woke up bright and early Tuesday morning for my flight to exciting Newcastle, New South Wales on the east coast for the AUSTRALIAN FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS!! Almost the entire team was on my same flight, which had a stop-over in Sydney. The highlights of the trip included the AMAZING views of Sydney from above and the wonderful plane for the 20-minute flight from Sydney to Newcastle. Danae and I had been joking in Perth that it [View Full Entry]
