Week 2 of Classes Monday to Wednesday was nothing out of the ordinary for week 2 - went to my classes, went skating, etc. On Tuesday I signed up for the NorthWest trip, which is a trip for all exchange students up into the outback and along the west coast of Australia. I'm excited :D The Tavern Thursday in the day I did pretty much nothing. Went skating in the morning then took a nap. Then I talked to Trista, and she told me she was going out to the Tavern, the Murdoch campus pub. So I decided to go along. I met up with her and her two housemates, Tim the American and Joanna the German, and we headed to campus. First we went over to a flat in the Student Village and met some ... read more

Skating!! On Thursday the 22nd I woke up at 5 AM (hurts, doesn't it) to go skating! That's right, I found ice here in the desert (or is it dessert?) Apparently there are only 2 rinks in all of Perth. And wouldn't you know it, one of them has a synchro team. So I'm now a member of Infusion, and I look forward to August when we get to represent Western Australia at Nationals in Newcastle, NSW (near Sydney). As for the level of skating, I wasn't really sure what to expect. But it's pretty good! For the skaters out there - they're doing level 3 footwork, like choctaws and double-three's and one and a half twizzels. So it's pretty good! And the girls are all really nice, so I'm fitting in well. I spent the ... read more

Point Walter On Saturday, February 17th, I went on a trip with the Murdoch International Students Association (MISA) to Point Walter, a park on the Swan River in Perth. It was just for a few hours, and we had 2 aboriginal guides who showed us around and taught us the uses of various plants. Including one that cures constipation which he apparently gave to a bunch of school children as a horrible prank on their teacher. After that story, I didn't eat a thing he gave me. After the hike, we had some food and were invited to come camping with our guide, who would feed us kangaroo meat. I'm still undecided about whether I want to go on that trip... Sunday I bought a used bike which has been getting me to and from class ... read more

Orientation and House-hunting On Monday morning, Trista and I headed back to Murdoch for our first Orientation activity - a welcoming and some important info. We then headed to the housing office, where I had made an appointment to get help finding off-campus housing. We soon learned there were about 100 international students without a place to stay in Perth, and only 1 lady helping them all. She took 5 of us on a trip to visit one place, and told us to come back at 4:30 to see 2 more. Clearly this was a seller’s market, and we were told to take the first place that looked liveable. Trista and I decided to check the campus bulletin boards, and we found loads of places for rent. We called and made 2 appointments. One of the ... read more

4WD Tour SUN, SUN, SUN!! It finally arrived on Friday, February 9th, the day before I was to leave Cairns. But also the day of my much-anticipated Rainforest 4WD Wildlife Eco-Safari!!! I was picked up in the morning by our tour guide in his truck. There were only 2 other people on the tour - a german couple who were staying at the same hotel as me. I got to sit front row as we rode into the rainforest. The tour operator had a real passion for the unknown - the tour took us to parts of the rainforest seldom seen by tourists. He had special access passes which got him into those parts. It was INCREDIBLE. We even got to go swimming in a lake, surrounded by a landscape that quite frankly could have been ... read more

Pro Dive Cairns The next two days were spent doing the in-class portion of my scuba diving class. We began with watching movies, discussing, and doing some quizzes. Then we went in the pool and tried things out first hand. Scuba diving is a lot more intense than you’d think. A lot of companies will take beginners out for the day without any training. However, there is a lot of stuff that could go wrong, and a course really prepares you for EVERYTHING. The Reef I woke up bright and early on the 5th to be picked up for the boat out to the reef. As advised, I popped 2 seasickness tablets. There was a delicious breakfast served when we arrived, and I was excited (albeit a little tired) to begin my 3-day reef adventure! Unfortunately, ... read more

The Arrival I slept almost the entire way to Cairns, but woke up in time to look out my window and see a gorgeous coastline - my first glimpse of Australia!! For the about 20 minutes while we flew over the northern tip of Australia, my eyes were glued to my window. Here it was, a country I’d been longing to see for as long as I could remember. HERE IT WAS!!! When we finally began our decent I couldn’t have been more excited. The Cairns airport was small, and mostly filled with Qantas planes, so our 747 Cathay Pacific plane was quite an addition. As I exited the plane, I was hit with the weather almost instantly - suffocatingly humid and hot. Quite the stark contrast to the snowy Toronto I had left behind. Customs ... read more

The Departure So I left Toronto on Monday, January 29th and arrived in Hong Kong early on Wednesday. I actually had a really good flight. I managed to get the emergency exit door seat (best seat in the house!) so I had leg room for the 18 hour flight. Plus we actually had to leave the plane in Anchorage, Alaska while they were refuelling, so I got to walk around the terminal and even buy some Alaska smoked salmon (which stunk up my fridge for the next week). I met two new friends on the flight - Dana and Blair - both on their way to Australia and New Zealand respectively for teacher’s college. We all had some time to kill in Hong Kong, so we decided to explore together. I had the longest stopover - ... read more

Hey everyone, I decided to get myself a travel blog! FINALLY!! I've written up a VERY long entry about what I've been doing for the past 3 weeks and I'll be posting it in small bits. I won't be offended if you don't read it; I usually skim through blogs myself. But since everyone wants to hear my stories, here they will be for all to see. Enjoy! ~Dafne~... read more
