Point Walter On Saturday, February 17th, I went on a trip with the Murdoch International Students Association (MISA) to Point Walter, a park on the Swan River in Perth. It was just for a few hours, and we had 2 aboriginal guides who showed us around and taught us the uses of various plants. Including one that cures constipation which he apparently gave to a bunch of school children as a horrible prank on their teacher. After that story, I didn't eat a thing he gave me. After the hike, we had some food and were invited to come camping with our guide, who would feed us kangaroo meat. I'm still undecided about whether I want to go on that trip...
Sunday I bought a used bike which has been getting me to and from class ever since.
Classes Begin! On Monday morning I woke up bright and early for my first day of classes. Monday I have Nature-Based Tourism, which I essentially chose because it has field trips. But it's actually proving to be an interesting class! After that I met with a Prof about an independent study course I'm taking. He gave me some advice on topics,
and I may be investigating a portion of the Western Australian government's State Sustainability Strategy. I'm still flipping through it for a specific topic, but there are lots of interesting things in there.
Tuesday, I went on a little adventure to the depths of Perth's EASTERN suburbs to retrieve my suitcase. While in Cairns, I had sent off one of my suitcases by Greyhound Freight since my domestic flight from Cairns to Perth wouldn't allow me to bring my 2 big bags. After delays due to rain, and a wonderful (or at least I'd imagine it to be so) trip through the Northern Territory, my bag arrived in Perth, so I was off to retrieve it. Taking a 30kg bag halfway across a city by public transit is quite an adventure, but the looks you get along the way are priceless. The most painful part was walking from the bus stop to my house, which has a HUGE hill. Once almost at the top, a group of elderly people who live next to me starting taunting me, telling me not to drop the bag. When I finally made it to my house, it was like Christmas - I hadn't
seen this stuff since I'd packed it 3 weeks prior!
Wednesday I had my 3rd class, Water Conservation and Auditing. It's a very small class, but I think it'll be a good one. It includes a field trip to a BREWERY which should be funny. Apparently they used to get free drinks on this trip, so it would be a little party, but they don't do that anymore. But a field trip is a field trip, so I'm excited.
Other than that, life goes on here. On a side note, if anyone wants a postcard or the like, please send me your mailing address. I should really get on that, I haven't sent out a single piece of mail since I arrived...
