ALOHA! and G'DAY MATES (as the lady on Hawaiian air repeatedly said on the way here) I am here in sunny (but cold) Canberra. The first trip on my whirlwind tour of Australia. Let me tell you, it wasn't so easy getting over here, that's for sure. To start out, leaving Vancouver was quite easy. Apart from it being at 6:40 in the morning, and me stupidly thinking that I shouldn't sleep before I left, there was little that went wrong in that first leg of travel. Unfortunately, once I got to the US, the story was alot different. I am going to warm everyone, that it is unwise to travel on memorial day weekend (I didn't even know that's what it was) or close to memorial day weekend. All flights were overbooked, and had standby ... read more

G'day! Or should it be ni hao? Taking advantage of my strategic location near to Sydney's Chinatown, I found a travel agent offering very cheap day-trips. Why not go to Canberra? And their price for it was 4 times less expensive than similar offers with other travel agents. I even checked the price of a train or coach journey to Canberra by public transport and even that was more expensive! A real steal deal I found. The only thing was that it was intended for Chinese tourists and that the guide was only going to speak Chinese. But never mind! I must add that Canberra is about 4 hours away from Sydney, so the day was something like 8 hours driving to Canberra and back, and less than 3 hours actually visiting Canberra. When Australia became ... read more

Well, last night I had my 'farewell and help me clean out my grog cupboard' party. I think its safe to say a fun time was had by all and this morning I'm left with very little alcohol, so everyone played their parts well! I kinda figured with my friends I wouldn't have any problems getting rid of all the alcohol and surprise, I didn't! They also got together a lovely little gift bag of Aussie things I might miss (thanks Donna, who did the shopping for it and from whats in it, had a fun time doing it!). Contents included the following: twisties; macadamias (chocolate coated!); condoms (assorted!); bonds hipsters (cos you should always have clean knickers on!); band aids; eucalyptus drops; sewing kit; berocca; detergent; tissues; vegemite; caramello koalas; and of course, TIM ... read more

We left Melbourne for Canberra at 7 in the morning. A short coach trip later and we arrived just after 3 in the afternoon. We got to our hostel quite easily, probably the only place we did find easily in the place. The hostel included a spa, swimming pool & sauna. Plush! Unfortunately the sauna was broken, the spa was cold and the swimming pool I could've jumped over. Never-the-less we still went in the spa/pool for a bit. On our first full day we decided we'd go to both old & new parliament. We worked out how to get there, it looked easy but as soon as you start walking around Canberra for a while you start to doubt your sense of direction as it's bigger than it seems. We did eventually get there ... read more

Well guys, i'm back, except this time i'm not so sure that this entry will be so interesting!! We headed down to Canberra (the capital of Australia), for what we thought might be an exciting visit. We stopped at a campsite called eaglehawk. Just of the federal highway, and about a 20 min drive into Canberra city centre, this was a quiet little caravan park, with nice amenities, a tennis court, a big field within which to pitch our tent, and a caged emu!! Yup, we were actually the only ones to pitch camp on this field, which, as the lonely planet says, has an after-thought for those travellers with tents!! And we had rain.............yet again!! Well, we got our tent up, said hello to Elmo the emu, who just kept biting the lock, but ... read more

An Amazingly Productive Day in the Country’s Capital It’s kinda funny to us that you at home have a view of our lives that is distorted by the fact that we only tell you the interesting things. I have to assume that you must think life on the road is pretty exciting all the time and that we are constantly wowed by everything we see and do. In actuality at least 40% of every day involves mundane tasks that aren’t worth telling you about. So with that in mind I will tell you about our one and only day in the capital of Australia, Canberra. As a quick example of how we bring smiles to the faces of our Australian hosts, I will diverge here to talk about the pronunciation of Canberra. Upon initially seeing the ... read more

My first entry. Its six weeks on Friday until I fly out for VEGAS baby! I've got a heap of things to get organised before I leave, including renting out my unit, storing my personal things, posting things to the UK and organising the fun stuff - the travel part of the journey. Until then, its all going to be boring - work, organising and getting prepared. Of course, there is my farewell party on Friday 4 May, but even thats a few weeks away!... read more

Mar 19. In to city and got another bit of exposure on 'Sunrise'. Camera actually zoomed in on flag and Koshi made a comment. The producer came out and said I'd had good exposure and please that was enough. I said ok and told her I wanted to be on the show proper. Swam off Darling Point. Rain set in in the afternoon. Mar 20. Early spruik Double Bay. Drove to Liverpool. Got copy of Feb 7 'Leader' article. Drove to Campbelltown. Got copy of Feb 8 article 'Macarthur Chronicle'. Same article. Drove to Goulburn. Searched 'Post' files. No article. Mar 21. Spruik Goulburn. Mentions of 'Sunrise' appearance. Drove to Queanbeyan. Got copy of May 14 article in 'Age'. Spruik Kingston and Manuka. Parked up late. Could see illuminated flag atop Parliament House through the trees. ... read more

Wow Canberra is strange! Its incredibley pretty- nice lakes and hills etc but also incredibley yuppie! If you live in canberrra, it seems you have to wear a suit and work for the government...and regularly go to parliament house! Needless to say, there's not much going on apart from people being posh in suits but its nice! THe weather is scorchio which makes a nice change from dull sydney! Spent yesterday morning wandering round the australian national botanic gardens (everything is 'national' here because its the capital). its not the capital in a london type way thoug- that would be sydney! Anyway yes, nice gardens, lots of lovely trees and a smelly eucalypt lawn...my fave! IN the afternoon i got picked up by a girl who i met at take that! She basically was my tour guide ... read more

Yes, we're in Canberra, Australia's national capital, and a place where most traveller's dare not even venture! We thought that we should come here before we headed to Sydney, the city that most people think is the capital, and give poor old Canberra a chance to impress these two backpackers. A brief history of federal Australia - Australia is a federation of six states and two territories, and it's well known that Sydney, in New South Wales, and Melbourne, in Victoria, have become Australia's two biggest and most populous cities. Thus, when it came to deciding where the nation's capital would be all hell broke lose! To stop this catfight in it's tracks the national compromise stated that a new city should be built, at least 160 kilometres away from Sydney, half way between the two ... read more
