Hello Ya'll! So this is my first official blog of the trip. I arrived in Cape last night and the Jazz Band met today. Oh, the jazz band is performing at the International Jazz and Blues Fest while we are in Edinburgh. Apparently 20,000 people are going to be there, so we have to be great!!! So, here's the thing...in the brass world we have this thing called "Summer Chops" (which is where you haven't been playing everyday, so your lips aren't exactly in shape!) Well, the jazz band played for 9 HOURS today! I am basically carrying my lips around with me! Carmex is amazing! But no, we really had fun today and got a whole lot accomplished, we could do a show right now, and get by. Luckily, James and I are sharing the ... read more

Hallo allemaal!!!

Day 1 We left for Portland around 6am. Kelsie drove down with us to take the car back. A quck stop at Tim Horton's on the Maine Mall road enabled us to meet what had to be Tim Horton's newest employee. Two atempts at a hazelnut with just cream, no sugar, and she produced a regular coffee for Brian the third time we asked for it. We'd already paid for it, and it was on the screen, but she was still having trouble. We got to the bus station right as the bus was boarding. A pleasant ride to Boston watching "the Bucket List," which really isn't a pleasant movie. A red cap at Boston tried to get us into the first class lounge there, but we were rejected because we weren't riding in a ... read more

Today we went to Alcatraz, the notorious prison off the coast of San Francisco. We caught the ferry from Pier 39 and as usual Kim was not appropriately dressed for such an occasion, wearing only a sarong she couldn’t help but notice how strong the winds were and how cold it was on the Pacific Ocean. Once we arrived on the island we sneaked on to the back of a walking tour and were told some very interesting facts about the inmates at Alcatraz: • Do you know that Al Capone aka Scarface was responsible for inventing the expiry date on milk cartons that we use today! It was a genius idea to prevent the prisoners from getting sick because they were drinking sour milk. • Did you know that the desperation and torment of the ... read more

14th July We woke early after a good night sleep at Mary's motel in Golden. We know there are bears about as there were some rubbish bags shredded to bits outside the Kicking horse grill, but we are just not going to see any! We made a reasonably early start after Amy had done her run and we had had breakfast at the Golden bakery on main street which was delicious. We arrived at the Canyon hot springs at about 12.30 and spent about an hour and a half relaxing in the thermal water which was about 40 degrees. We had a long drive through the mountains to Kamloops on our way back to Vancouver and the coast. We reached Kamloops about 4.00p.m and while Bob got the computer out Rich and Amy and I went ... read more

Well it's 23 days until we depart and our minds seem to be too focused on wedding thoughts, and not enough on travelling!! but we're determined to get back to thinking about our trip, and to try and get our final bits and pieces ready. I still dont really know how to psyche yourself up for a trip like this, but we cant wait to get started and be sitting on that beach in Belize sipping our free unlimited rum punch!! Wow, the past few weeks have gone by incredibly fast and I have just under 3 weeks left here before I move on again to my next big adventure before making my way back to Alaska (which is in itself another adventure). It's going to be a busy 3 weeks though as this weekend I take off for Wilmington, NC to see my cousin, go scuba diving on a couple wrecks *smile*, tour around the campus that I spent 5 months of my life at, and sit on the sunny beaches of North Carolina again. Then next weekend is my Advanced Scuba diving class up at Lake Jocassee, SC and after...the dreaded REU participant research seminar where I give a powerpoint in front of the Biology Dept about my research this summer. It's going to be ... read more

Well yesterday i forgot to mention a kid who i am working with at the moment in my singing class. Basically she seems to be challenged in the way that she expresses her emotions and often comes across as slow and as if she doesnt understand. She is also quite easily angered...kinda like a toddler. Basically i am working closely with her (she's called Destiny), gradually teaching her about notes and how to read music. Im not doing it alone as i have Rita (the staff member from Ireland) helping me out with her behaviour but Rita doesnt really have any muscial knowledge so the teaching is kinda up to me. It can be hard sometimes as it requires a lot of patience as music is even hard for the most able children. She gets quite ... read more
