As much as it is both a symbol of freedom and a source of controversy, the United States of America still beckons millions from all over the world with its promises of freedom and opportunity, or what is better known as the American Dream. With a population founded on immigration, the US has often been referred to as a virtual melting pot, where diversity in culture, race, religion, and language blend together to produce a single, and for the most part, united nation. But to the first-time visitor, America also presents seemingly contradictory qualities. It's a country where conservative values face off against alternative lifestyles and contentious division is widely apparent in the country's politics and debate over issues like abortion, gay marriage and health care.

With so much dichotomy, the United States can offer the traveler a breadth of sightseeing and adventure. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, the rich American landscape encompasses sweeping mountains ranges, national parks, sun-kissed beaches and wide open desert spaces. With such a vast terrain, it's been said that one of the best ways to see America is by road trip. Pick up a copy of the pop culture favorite “On The Road” by Jack Kerouac and hop on the famous Route 66 for a cross country sample of American culture the adventure-seeking traveler cannot miss.

Highlights

 • New York City The city that never sleeps, NYC is the most populous city in the USA
 • Yellowstone National Park Spanning through three states, Yellowstone National Park is home to the fierce grizzly bear and famous geyser, Old Faithful. Glacier National Park Located in Montana, Glacier National Park has some of the country's most spectacular mountain scenery.
 • Mohave Desert Camp out under the stars like a real cowboy in the Southwestern desert
 • Washington, DC The nation's capital and home to the Library of Congress, White House, Smithsonian and more.

Tips and Hints

 • Exchange rates mean that America can be expensive for travelers visiting from other countries. Make sure to bring extra cash, especially for spending in the big cities.
 • Travel Insurance The US has some of the best health care in the world but it's also extremely expensive. Travel insurance is a must.
 • Tipping is customary in restaurants and is not included in the bill. Adding on a tip of 15-20% is standard.
 • Accommodation Although not as common as hotels or motels, there are youth hostels in The States.

We were really tired. We took a while to leave the hotel room. When we finally left, we went to the National museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola. Amazing museum... lots of aircarfts from all the wars that the US has been in. As a guide told me, they receive damaged aircrafts or found in the ocean or found in some wierd place from wars as early as world war I, Vietnan or Korea, even from Iraque on a daily basis. But they don't keep them. They restore them and send them to museums all over the world. We didn't really [View Full Entry]

Well it is all pixie dust, mickey ears and princess tea parties this week. I am back aboard the Disney Magic and automatically I want to head down to the bowels of the ship to crew quarters and the girls remind me I am a passanger and can even use the glass elevators! Such decadence!! The trip from DisneyWorld to the port in Cape Canaveral was long as I had to go back to the airport and then out to the port as I was staying in the dodgey brothers budget resort at DisneyWorld but the thought of seeing my friends [View Full Entry]

We woke up with the neighbor on the window... She made a delicious breakfast for us and fed my kids... thank you neighbor! We tided up all the loosy ends in the house and we went to the other Fennell's house to do some work in the trailer and say good bye once again. After couple hours, we were finally good to go. Lots of kisses and hugs, and more kisses and hugs and lots of tears and so long Jacksonville Beach. Our final destination for today is Pensacola-FL. We arrived in Pensacola late night and we slept in some cheap [View Full Entry]

As we now had a free day we seized the opportunity to have Nick and kay back to ours [View Full Entry]

Wishing one and all a Happy Christmas—Joyeux Noel-- and health and happiness in the New Year ! As I write, Christmas carols are playing on KDFC, the Bay Area’s local classical radio station. I look out the window of my apartment and see the lights of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate and Bay bridges in the distance, and in the foreground, Christmas lights on the houses in my tree-lined street. It’s gotten a bit colder, and the skies have been grey for the last week. Nevertheless, I’m still able to go swimming in the outdoor pool on campus and [View Full Entry]

Couchsurfing. I totally never heard of that concept until just this year when a friend I met through one of my stays in the Chicago Hostels had told me about it. He's from Europe and was going to rent a car and drive down through the USA and couchsurf. It made me curious and I had recently joined the website: www.couchsurfing.org I haven't hosted or surfed yet, but I think it's a brilliant idea. Sure, it may be a very risky commitment to a lot of people especially the Americans who are very closed minded compared to such countries like Canada [View Full Entry]

Julia's Birthday! We sang Happy Birthday to Julia with Tio Matt and kids in the morning and we kept on working. More packing, more cleanning, more exhaustion, more good byes for the third time to the same people, more crying... Wanda came to help again and the neighbor took care of my kids and us once again. Now everything is in the trailer! Now we're going, right? NO. After connecting the trailer on the car, we realized the trailer was too heavy on the tip making the car extremely low. Well, let's take EVERYTHING out of the trailer and rearrange it. [View Full Entry]

I am in at work today for a half day of wrapping things up, though the phone calls will likely continue right into the flight to Jo'burg. Jennifer is sleeping in and wrapping up the usual program at the house. Musings I've heard and read a variety of opinions on how southern Africa will be. Not entirely certain what to expect, but despite the crime rate, despite the disease, despite the wild beasts, the greatest danger on that trip will be the amount of driving I will do. Driving is always dangerous, especially in what has become the familiar roads of [View Full Entry]

At the SkyClub

We left Roseburg heading north to Sutherlin and West on 138 to get to 101. It was a great drive - really beautiful scenery and the Dodge handled the hills and corners really well. I, on the other hand, was not as fortunate. Bob is a great driver but I’ve decided that I’m not the best passenger. I white knuckled just about every - even remotely - sharp corner. Visions of streaks of white metal and fiberglass sliding sideways down the highway forced me to hold my breath on several occasions. The very serious gusts of wind coming off the ocean [View Full Entry]

If you go online and google Marathon City Marina aparently you can look at a web cam and see Seaquel. At night I am just in front of two boats that have multi colored lights on their boats saped in an upside down vee. In the day I have an American flag on the back of the boat, a dodger over the companionway door, and a cover over the helm. [View Full Entry]
