United States Travel Blogs

As much as it is both a symbol of freedom and a source of controversy, the United States of America still beckons millions from all over the world with its promises of freedom and opportunity, or what is better known as the American Dream. With a population founded on immigration, the US has often been referred to as a virtual melting pot, where diversity in culture, race, religion, and language blend together to produce a single, and for the most part, united nation. But to the first-time visitor, America also presents seemingly contradictory qualities. It's a country where conservative values face off against alternative lifestyles and contentious division is widely apparent in the country's politics and debate over issues like abortion, gay marriage and health care.

With so much dichotomy, the United States can offer the traveler a breadth of sightseeing and adventure. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, the rich American landscape encompasses sweeping mountains ranges, national parks, sun-kissed beaches and wide open desert spaces. With such a vast terrain, it's been said that one of the best ways to see America is by road trip. Pick up a copy of the pop culture favorite “On The Road” by Jack Kerouac and hop on the famous Route 66 for a cross country sample of American culture the adventure-seeking traveler cannot miss.

Highlights

 • New York City The city that never sleeps, NYC is the most populous city in the USA
 • Yellowstone National Park Spanning through three states, Yellowstone National Park is home to the fierce grizzly bear and famous geyser, Old Faithful. Glacier National Park Located in Montana, Glacier National Park has some of the country's most spectacular mountain scenery.
 • Mohave Desert Camp out under the stars like a real cowboy in the Southwestern desert
 • Washington, DC The nation's capital and home to the Library of Congress, White House, Smithsonian and more.

Tips and Hints

 • Exchange rates mean that America can be expensive for travelers visiting from other countries. Make sure to bring extra cash, especially for spending in the big cities.
 • Travel Insurance The US has some of the best health care in the world but it's also extremely expensive. Travel insurance is a must.
 • Tipping is customary in restaurants and is not included in the bill. Adding on a tip of 15-20% is standard.
 • Accommodation Although not as common as hotels or motels, there are youth hostels in The States.

Our new best friends Dave & Pam, whom we had met in McCarthy, invited us to sponge off their friends Bob & Patty for a weekend at their cabin, so we could fish for King Salmon on the Kenai river, which boasts some of the best salmon fishing in the world. Obviously after long and careful consideration we said yes! Bob who is half Eskimo, raised by his Eskimo mother, has hunted whale in just a canoe. Eskimos now use modern weapons in their canoes, rather than the traditional method of jumping out of a canoe onto the whale’s back and [View Full Entry]

I’m getting travel flashbacks like Jenny Agutter in “Walkabout”. I keep looking up and finding I’m somewhere else. I’m at a gig watching “The Pretty Things.” A band that’s been around since the ‘60s. When they appeared on TV, my uncle remarked, “They don’t look very bloody pretty to me.” Suddenly its me and my Harley back on the Texas highway. The music suits my road trip. Later that week I’m grabbing lunch on the run in a roadside lay by. Opposite is a wood. I look out for bears as I get out my car to b [View Full Entry]

Apparently we're just not the daily blog type of folks. This is no surprise to me because my journals sometimes skip months or years. Frank says he hasn't started yet. Perhaps we've been too busy getting about, with not much time to reflect. For years my photos were called 'mood' pictures because I only got the camera out when it was too rainy or foggy to do anything else. Hopefully this has changed a bit but I notice that most of the pics are BLUE. Our last blog was at Mile Hammock Bay. So we now miraculously reappear at the lovely, [View Full Entry]

Vail We were pleasantly surprised to find Austria on the way to Aspen when we decided to make an ice-cream stop. Vail, a ski resort town, had to be designed by a home-sick Austrian architect. It features the wooden Austrian bridge that goes over a creek, narrow roads, Alpine houses and condos with ornate shields, crests, and flags and colorful and fragrant flowers on the windows. At around two thousand dollars per square feet, I could own a tiny piece of a small Austrian ski village replica. The dining options are stupendous in this town. There are many great places to [View Full Entry]

“What about a day trip to Quartzsite?” “Where’s that?” “And we can go to the Flying J for breakfast.” “Let’s do it, she replied.” Arriving at the Flying J, we saw signs for the truck stop, Wendy’s and the restaurant. “I’ll check this out; stay put.” I went inside and looked around. I saw the Wendy’s section at the far end, so I went the other way. The food court was not that way; I jawed a little with some truck drivers watching a big screen television. “Get out of the way, [View Full Entry]

Before the Grand Canyon, we drove up North to Bryce Canyon. It was absolutely stunning! We camped for a night before moving on. While we were there we drove to every overlook, and hiked a trail called the Navajo Loop that took us down into the canyon and around the other-worldly rock formations. But the best thing about it by far was the night sky. The stars were so clear the sky was almost white with them. We camped at Rainbow Point, around nine thousand feet. It was an amazing place. From there we drove down through Monument Valley, to the [View Full Entry]

It's been snowing like crazy the past day and a half. As of this morning, I estimate we've gotten 20 inches of snow and it's still snowing. One of the girls here at the Parkview said they are supposed to get over 3 feet by Saturday. It's deep and beautiful. Still very few snowmobilers so I was breaking trail through about 2-1/2 feet of snow in a lot of places. My passenger side windshield wiper quit working, so I started out my day driving 23 miles up to Houghton and got it fixed at Keweenaw Automotive. So, after that little diversion, [View Full Entry]

It's been a few years, but the travel bug has bitten me once again. And, since my travel blog is still here, I'm promising myself and you that I will try to keep it updated over the next few months. As for posting frequency, I expect that I will probably post updates more frequently in January/February while I'm on the road, since I'll be seeing and doing a greater variety of things. Once I land in Israel, I will probably update the blog roughly every ten days to two weeks, and then whenever I get a chance to take a side [View Full Entry]

HAWAII For the first 2 weeks on the Big Island of Hawaii, Xiomara and I spent most of our time sunbathing by the pool and drinking rum. We did make it to a few beaches and managed to do some snorkeling as well. We had very enjoyable time with the family. Which included a big game of beach football. I think all four of us, (Randy, Rick, Rod and myself) will all make full recoveries from our injuries by next season… Just in time to play again next year! We also managed to see a “BIG LUAU” at The Royal [View Full Entry]
