As much as it is both a symbol of freedom and a source of controversy, the United States of America still beckons millions from all over the world with its promises of freedom and opportunity, or what is better known as the American Dream. With a population founded on immigration, the US has often been referred to as a virtual melting pot, where diversity in culture, race, religion, and language blend together to produce a single, and for the most part, united nation. But to the first-time visitor, America also presents seemingly contradictory qualities. It's a country where conservative values face off against alternative lifestyles and contentious division is widely apparent in the country's politics and debate over issues like abortion, gay marriage and health care.

With so much dichotomy, the United States can offer the traveler a breadth of sightseeing and adventure. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, the rich American landscape encompasses sweeping mountains ranges, national parks, sun-kissed beaches and wide open desert spaces. With such a vast terrain, it's been said that one of the best ways to see America is by road trip. Pick up a copy of the pop culture favorite “On The Road” by Jack Kerouac and hop on the famous Route 66 for a cross country sample of American culture the adventure-seeking traveler cannot miss.

Highlights

 • New York City The city that never sleeps, NYC is the most populous city in the USA
 • Yellowstone National Park Spanning through three states, Yellowstone National Park is home to the fierce grizzly bear and famous geyser, Old Faithful. Glacier National Park Located in Montana, Glacier National Park has some of the country's most spectacular mountain scenery.
 • Mohave Desert Camp out under the stars like a real cowboy in the Southwestern desert
 • Washington, DC The nation's capital and home to the Library of Congress, White House, Smithsonian and more.

Tips and Hints

 • Exchange rates mean that America can be expensive for travelers visiting from other countries. Make sure to bring extra cash, especially for spending in the big cities.
 • Travel Insurance The US has some of the best health care in the world but it's also extremely expensive. Travel insurance is a must.
 • Tipping is customary in restaurants and is not included in the bill. Adding on a tip of 15-20% is standard.
 • Accommodation Although not as common as hotels or motels, there are youth hostels in The States.

I was charge nurse again, and I handled 3 emergency situations, almost within 5 minutes apart, all while mentoring another nurse. I can't tell you the accomplished feeling I got. I realized I've grown up so much, developed thicker skin, and I'm pretty much very comfortable at my job and really got to learn the ropes. Many people have asked me to stay, but I honestly want to leave on a good note, and have a broader clinical experience. I'm just thinking to myself - the majority of the world has experienced malaria, why is it out of our clinical expertise? [View Full Entry]

I´m going to Miami, haba neba ami ami... Is how Miami - as immortalised by Will Smith - sounded to me, before I actually went there. In my imagination, and not uncoincidentally, in line with said hit song - Miami was a place where the sun is always shining, the skies don´t see rain and the people are unfalteringly beautiful. With the very slight exception of a small amount of rain (barely worth mentioning, were it not for the author´s interest in accuracy), my preconceptions were basically true. Travelling on the local bus through Miami´s famous South Beach, you can look [View Full Entry]

Happy, Happy Holidays to all our family and friends! We were planning on having an at home Christmas this year, but have been called to Indiana. Ron's mom is not doing well and this is where we need to be. So, we are having a white, snowy Christmas instead of a white, sandy Christmas. Shortly after Christmas, if possible, we'll be flying to Tucson, Arizona to hike the desert, see friends, and cheer the U of A Wildcats on to victory. We have plans to see several games in Tucson and then follow them to LA for games at USC [View Full Entry]

Now to clear up any possible confusion about going to the Gay Bar. I haven't decided to go over to the other side. The sledders who ride up here know that the Gay Bar is just that: the bar in the town of Gay, MI. Gay is a tiny town that once had one of the many copper mines in the Keweenaw Peninsula. It's located on the eastern side of the peninsula right on Lake Superior. We received a couple of inches of snow in the morning and the trails were in perfect condition. The groomers were out on almost every [View Full Entry]

Good morning! We arrived yesterday in LA and found our way to Santa Monica. The weather is warm and sunny! A great stepping stone into the heat of Fiji. We leave tonight on a 12 hr flight and will wake up submerged deep within the islands of the South Pacific! We should point out to you that you may be seeing a lot of pictures of a previously 'stuffed' animal Mr. Blue Frog. This is a special mascot for Nancy's grade 5/6 class. He will be traveling with us and will be sending numerous reports and postcards to her students. [View Full Entry]

Last night, after a visit to Tire Kingdom, we drove a little more 'till Crowley City (150 miles west from New Orleans)... we finally woke up a little early this time and drove, drove, drove, drove and drove a little more! That is all we did all day long, drive! We got to see Texa's neck of the woods plus the arms and legs ... farm and more farm... I used to think that I had a redneck backyard, but Texas country site has the whole package, you can't bit that!... front, sides, backyard full of junk. We stopped at Stephen [View Full Entry]

I'm staying at the Ramada Inn in Hancock right across the bridge from Houghton for this trip because it is close to Keweenaw Motorsports. That's because I'll be picking up Jan's new snowmobile there Tuesday. It's a 2009 Skidoo MXZ 600 Etec. That's why I've got the 2007 Arctic Cat F8 for sale on Ebay: [url=http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2007-Arctic-Cat-F8-LXR-Snowmobile_W0QQitemZ330387964985QQcmdZViewItemQQptZSnowmobiles?hash=item4ceca84439] It's Sunday evening and I had a real nice uneventful trip here from home. 4th October: and so THE day dawns at last. "Dawns?" That's a silly word - it's still pitch black at that time of day, but off we go at 5.33, and a surreal time that was, as will be seen! But the chosen route was clear, and we got to the airport at about 7.20; a wise decision, as, on her return home, my wife noted the not-unexpected problems with the M25 in the Gatwick-bound direction. Straight to check-in, and amazingly was away from it by 7.40. And it was then that there were the telltale signs of heightened security. "What's [View Full Entry]

Another day of driving. The wind was very strong and it slowed us down a bit. After Kerrville the mountains started showing up and we were pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Long farms, a house every 4 or 5 acres, lots of ruins. Lots of up and down. The speed limit is 80 mph and we were going 55 mph average.Terry's phone doesn't have any signal.. (maybe he will have some signal when we get to El Paso tomorrow morning). So, just to be in the safe side, we stopped our trip a little earlier than the other days, [View Full Entry]

Yestarday night we drove through a big storm. Lots of rain and wind. Today once again we woke up late and we went for a walk in the French Quarter of New Orleans. We met cousin Billy at the Superdome's truck parking lot and we talked about our route through Texas. We saw lots of damaged buildings, abandoned houses and ugly areas. But also, we saw a lot of fun stuff. The streets of the french quarter are full of music and art. Very neat houses and architecture. We wished we could have stayed longer. +/- 30 miles out of New [View Full Entry]
