As much as it is both a symbol of freedom and a source of controversy, the United States of America still beckons millions from all over the world with its promises of freedom and opportunity, or what is better known as the American Dream. With a population founded on immigration, the US has often been referred to as a virtual melting pot, where diversity in culture, race, religion, and language blend together to produce a single, and for the most part, united nation. But to the first-time visitor, America also presents seemingly contradictory qualities. It's a country where conservative values face off against alternative lifestyles and contentious division is widely apparent in the country's politics and debate over issues like abortion, gay marriage and health care.

With so much dichotomy, the United States can offer the traveler a breadth of sightseeing and adventure. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, the rich American landscape encompasses sweeping mountains ranges, national parks, sun-kissed beaches and wide open desert spaces. With such a vast terrain, it's been said that one of the best ways to see America is by road trip. Pick up a copy of the pop culture favorite “On The Road” by Jack Kerouac and hop on the famous Route 66 for a cross country sample of American culture the adventure-seeking traveler cannot miss.

Highlights

 • New York City The city that never sleeps, NYC is the most populous city in the USA
 • Yellowstone National Park Spanning through three states, Yellowstone National Park is home to the fierce grizzly bear and famous geyser, Old Faithful. Glacier National Park Located in Montana, Glacier National Park has some of the country's most spectacular mountain scenery.
 • Mohave Desert Camp out under the stars like a real cowboy in the Southwestern desert
 • Washington, DC The nation's capital and home to the Library of Congress, White House, Smithsonian and more.

Tips and Hints

 • Exchange rates mean that America can be expensive for travelers visiting from other countries. Make sure to bring extra cash, especially for spending in the big cities.
 • Travel Insurance The US has some of the best health care in the world but it's also extremely expensive. Travel insurance is a must.
 • Tipping is customary in restaurants and is not included in the bill. Adding on a tip of 15-20% is standard.
 • Accommodation Although not as common as hotels or motels, there are youth hostels in The States.

After taking New Year's Day off and resting we decided to tour the city again. We headed out and it was lightly snowing and cold but probably around 33 degrees, not too bad. We layered our clothing this time because the tour bus gets really cold. We caught the Gray Line bus near Ground Zero about 6 blocks from the apartment. We enjoyed the tour especially with the heater. We learned a lot about China town and different tenement areas on the East side. We visited the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. It was incredibly nice and we may stay there one day. [View Full Entry]

Stefanie and I are moving to Los Angeles in a week! We've got a long week of preparation ahead of us. There are so many people to see in such a short period of time. Our route is planned out, but hotels have yet to be booked. Lots of packing lies ahead, too. Our trip will be about 2430 miles, take 6 days, and span 11 states. I'm excited! And also a little sad. I have not had a lot of free time while on this trip home to the US. The free time I have had was often without consistent Internet access--stealing signals from neighbors while leaning against the window gets tiresome--so I have been on a blog break of sorts. Never a bad thing, to take a break and reflect, but then I fear I will forget to write down my observations and the key experiences that really are all still part of the great China Experiment. It's been three plus weeks, but here are some highlights. We flew home without real issue [View Full Entry]

Hi Peeps, First of all, I want to wish everybody a happy new year! May 2010 be all you ever wanted! Second, Timo has past all his tests and is now a certified private pilot! To celebrate, we decided to take a few days of and go camping somewhere. Now, if you're in Florida, you've got camping gear and a car filled with gas... where do you go? The Everglades of course! Last Wednesday afternoon, right after Timo gets his good news, we pack up and head south. We take the scenic route along the coast, stop for Mexican food and [View Full Entry]

So it's about 3 weeks before my trip. My visa has been a go. I'm quite excited - i JUST bought a water UV light sterilizer (which is the epitome of being hard-core in the jungle) for those instances where there's a cholera epidemic (WOOHOOO). I've already been sick in Egypt once, I don't intend on getting it again. I mean, seriously, who thought it'd be a great health move to swim in the Nile anyway? ...and a snake bite kit. Funny, but I'm sure i'll thank myself as I'm sucking the poison out of my leg. It even includes a [View Full Entry]

Hello Friends, I finally made it down to Sarasota after three long days of driving. It is unbelievably cold down here, like below 50. Regardless, I am all settled in to my new room, living with a couple who have grown children. The neighborhood is nice despite this cold weather, lots of tropical looking trees that we definitely don't have up in Wisconsin , and we saw some small white birds pecking on someone's yard across the street, probably ibises(sp) due to their size and coloration. Tomorrow is my orientation at 9 over at the aquarium and I'll spend most of [View Full Entry]

Well here I am blogging again. For someone from a generation that is on the cusp of the technology era I am just slow to say the least. I have challenged myself to be more open to technology and how it can enhance my life, thus the new blog. I am getting married this year in October and I started a wedding blog a few months back. It has given me a decent start to the world of blogging, but I feel it is time to branch out. I have always loved to travel, but found a much deeper passion for [View Full Entry]

Yee haw! Here we sit in Parker Arizona in La Paz County park. This place is GREAT! (It was 70 degrees today) We had looked at about 5 other parks in the area and when we got to this one, it was pretty much a given that this is where we would spend the next week. We picked a spot, went back to the office and there were 3 more rigs behind us wanting in. We've been here for a week now, have extended or stay another two weeks and may extend it another month after that. If we can convert [View Full Entry]
