Britain's American colonies broke with the mother country in 1776 and were recognized as the new nation of the United States of America following the Treaty of Paris in 1783. During the 19th and 20th centuries, 37 new states were added to the original 13 as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions. The two most traumatic experiences in the nation's history were the Civil War (1861-65) and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Buoyed by victories in World Wars I and II and the end of the Cold War in 1991, the US remains the world's most powerful nation state. The economy is marked by steady growth, low unemployment and inflation, and rapid advances in technology. To be updated

It took me awhile to figure out that the wavy thing going through the middle is a roller coaster. I haven't been able to figure out where it might be. djr
We left Anderson at 9:50 on the 12th of Feb., - reached Indianapolis one hour later, sent a few cards & then took the sleeper to Chattanooga. The next morning we met Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Husband who were on their way to Taylorville, Lake Co., Fla. We reached Chattanooga 3 hrs. late, but we enjoyed the day and were not very tired. We stopped at the Grand Hotel and liked it very much. Oasis RV Resort
A very 'la di da' place.
Saturday, October 4, 2008 They say what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas. It’s a good thing too. We feel like we breathed in enough smoke today to last a lifetime, and it’s a good thing all that smoke stays in Las Vegas. Guess they haven’t heard of lung cancer here, although we saw plenty of cancer awareness posters and a billboard that said ‘we fight cancer here’. Ha! The air was ghastly in spite of attempts in the better quality hotels to scent the air with all sorts of fragrances - designed to subliminally encourage more shopping and [View Full Entry]

On the 14th after breakfast, we went out to get pictures developed & bought a black felt hat for rainy weather; then we took the sigh seeing car for the Chickamauga Battlefield. This we enjoyed very much in spite of the rain. After lunch Will took a little nap & I wrote several cards. We started for Lookout Mt. The ride up the incline was wonderful, so steep with large rocks on either side. After reaching the top, we bought a few cards but because of the rain and fog we could not see anything. In the evening we went to [View Full Entry]

Feb. 15 - We left Chattanooga at 7 A.M. The morning was beautiful. Old Lookout Mt. showed up in all his glory. We passed through the grass regions of Tenn. Most of the country of Geo. and Miss. was very poor. We saw our last patch of snow about 100 mi. out of Chattanooga. About 50 mi. south of that we saw the first cotton field & from that on there were many, although not such large fields as I expected to see. We saw oxen and windowless houses, just shutters. Much of the country has a rundown appearance. As the [View Full Entry]

October 4th, 5:53pm We had to have an early start this morning so we could make the 8:15am horn blowing. Let me explain, during breakfast every morning there is a member of the Johnson family (who own the Enzian Inn) blows the traditional German horn ( I am sure it has a technical name but I am calling it the big giant horn) at 8:15am and Renee really wanted to see it. So we had a nice breakfast and listened to the horn playing. We also saw a future horn player as Mr. Johnson let a little boy try it. After [View Full Entry]

Day 99!- Monday I'm regrettably now awaiting the shuttle to Newark airport for my final domestic flight...to Chicago for two final nights of opera. Then home on Wednesday and back to work next MOnday. Only when I focus on specific places and events dp I realise how much I have done and how long it has been. The scary part is that I am still having a wonderful time...I guess when the travel bug bites it gives and insatiable appetite for not just more of the same, but better organised next time. Oh dear. Saturday evening I went to " Chicago [View Full Entry]

After all the hassles of Saturday (see previous post), Sunday has turned out to be a hell of a lot better. We visited the Natural History Museum which has got an exhibition on called "Cosmic Collisions". You get shuffled into a theatre where the whole roof is the screen. Robert Redford narrated a storey about how the moon was formed after a meteor hit the earth and the fragments that where displaced merged together to form the moon. Apparently it only look 1 month. They also had a cool exhibition on about marine animals which I had some fun photographing. We [View Full Entry]

Europe seems to have a little bit of everything i like in life. A wonderful and old history, amazing culture lit, art and music a love of soccer, and even good food [View Full Entry]
