From New York we flew into LA, picked up our rental car (a 3.5L V6 Chevy!) and headed up the coast to Eureka. We had a day poking around LA, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and the beaches. The beaches were super nice but it was a bit cold for swimming. After LA we drove up the coast, sticking to Highway 1 or 101 along the coast. We took a week to get up the coast and it was really nice the whole way. The first thing we noticed was the lack of people, coming from crowded Europe, camping in the US was peaceful, relaxed and spacious. We stayed in State park campgrounds with the wildlife and have seen heaps of squirrels and deer although have seen signs warning of rattle snakes, raccoons, mountain lions and bears! Up ... read more

Dimanche 4 novembre (jour 55). Notre ... read more

Sitting in an entrance to the Educational Learning Center here at Reed College, I've found a nice empty iMAC to write this little ditty. The last 24 hours has beena hoorah of collegiate observation. Beginning yesterday morning at 8AM I met Gabe, Laey's coworker, who attends Lewis and Clark. It worked out incredbily well as I wanted to bicycle down to L&C, and didn't know how to get there at all as it was far far away. Prompting my visit to L&C was Tace, a girl a grade below me from Fairfield who I was acquainted with. The ride was cold; the rain had quit though, yet the fog was bearing down on us suffusing me with moisture. I met Gabe in the middle of downtown and I followed right behind him along the bike routes. ... read more

We started the day early with grocery shopping at one of the local stores as the house keeper was coming by early for the week. I have loved to hear the tale of the Embassies. Apparently Israel has a phone number that is one digit different from Marks favorite pizza place. Marks mom believes that is because whenever there is a crisis there is a spike in pizza orders, which means Israel get heads up. We went to see the national mall, which was an experience. I got to see some Van Gogh and Van Gogh pieces that were amazing. I love anything with amazing uses of color and they were way more then I though they would be. Attached are some pictures of monuments so know I was there. It blew my mind to realize ... read more

The final stop on our trip was New York. We said farewell to the UK early on the 21st of November, after a panic getting to the airport when our organised taxi didn’t turn up. We still made it on time though, and we had a relaxing flight to JFK. After manoeuvring the confusing subway with our luggage, we arrived at our hotel in Greenwich Village (lower central Manhattan) about lunchtime. Keen to see the city, we spent the afternoon looking around Macy’s (the biggest store in the world), Times Square, the Empire State building, and the Chrysler building. In the evening we had a traditional American dinner of McDonalds so we could see if the serving sizes really were as big as everyone says the are. We weren’t disappointed. After dinner we walked to Bryant ... read more

Before we left Australia Jono and I realised at the last minute that we needed to get US visas as we were stopping off in Hawaii on the way to Canada. Long story that I do not feel like going in to here, suffice to say we both ended up with a multiple entry five-year visa to the US. So, when our friend Cass suggested we go see Band of Horses play in Seattle, we both leapt at the idea. We wanted, after all, to make use of those damn visas. We had also heard that Seattle was a very cool City and worth visiting. Only a three hour drive (assuming no hassles at the border) from our place, is apparently a favourite weekend destination for Vancouverites - especially lately with the Canadian dollar being, for ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Las Vegas November 21st 2007

So, Vegas! Possibly the craziest place I have ever been to. I was firstly amazed at the sizes of the hotels and the apparent sheer classiness of the place. All the lights, nearly as many fountains, statues, sculptures etc. It was not nearly as tacky as I imagined. However my opinion started to change after three days of walking past hundreds of Mexicans wearing T-Shirts saying 'Girls to your door in 15 minutes' and trying to hand me flyers for $38 women. I couldn't believe that the prostitution was so in your face; and so cheap. But apart from that, I was very much in awe of the place, plus we had Graham to tell us every interesting fact he knew about everything. The drive to Vegas was also an experience in itself, seeing that much ... read more

Set out for Orlando the following day and as usual, the journey took us a little longer than it would take normal people. Got to the hotel eventually though, which was a bit of a shock - my mum appeared to have booked us into the gayest hotel in the world. I can't upload photos at the moment, but it was a big pink castle. To reassert my masculinity, I picked a fight with David as soon as we got in the room, forgetting he was bigger than me. That afternoon was spent putting my camera in to be fixed (yay!) and losing to my dad at mini golf (boo!). The next day we took a trip to Islands of Adventure, in my opinion the best of Orlando's famous theme parks. I'd been once before 5 ... read more
