Sitting in an entrance to the Educational Learning Center here at Reed College, I've found a nice empty iMAC to write this little ditty.
The last 24 hours has beena hoorah of collegiate observation. Beginning yesterday morning at 8AM I met Gabe, Laey's coworker, who attends Lewis and Clark. It worked out incredbily well as I wanted to bicycle down to L&C, and didn't know how to get there at all as it was far far away. Prompting my visit to L&C was Tace, a girl a grade below me from Fairfield who I was acquainted with.
The ride was cold; the rain had quit though, yet the fog was bearing down on us suffusing me with moisture. I met Gabe in the middle of downtown and I followed right behind him along the bike routes. Finally nearing L&C and having a bit of extra time he took me to Portland's largest cemetery as a backway to get to the college. Upon arriving to L&C, Gabe and I actually had a moment to speak, and he asking who I was looking for surprisingly enough knew of Tace, though couldn't say thoroughly. A moment later Gabe smiles and Tace
My Couch!
Actually a comfortable bed with a room! comes walking down the sidewalk with an odd expression on her face, no surprise at seeing me on campus at 9am. Gabe ran off to class, and so did Tace after I appointed times to see them afterwards.
I made my way up to Admissions to discover I missed the tour by a few minutes, but ran and caught up with it. The school was overall nice, though I wasn't impressed by our Abercrombie & Fitch wearing tour guide who spoke an all too quick northeastern accent. Much of the pretty campus with it's rose gardens, reflecting pool, and clean atmosphere left me feelng friendly yet not completely taken in by it's effort. Maybe it was the fact that it felt town-like but I knew I was still in the middle of city, or maybe it was just that I know where I want to be sometimes too much. After the tour we had a pleasant information session which really stressed and impressed me with L&C's overseas program which had a severe amount of options.
Enough of the campus for me as I knew I would be there most of the day, I jumped back on Lacey's bicycle
for a tour of the neighborhood, hoping to find Tyron Creek Park, which is apparently hard to miss but I managed to do just that. Returning back for lunch to meet Gabe, I enjoyed my first average price meal of a tasty salad bar for less than $5, with a bunch of jalapeNos as a side. Gabe was incredbily congenial and like me had dual citizenship which is apparently helpful when applying to schools in the US. He ranges out from Bali and decided to come to the USA for college, and got caught in Portland. He is a senior and has really enjoyed his time there which left a nice view of the school for me.
Following lunch, I took a walk around school and even joined a class that afternoon. Intro to Short Story. The teacher was a little frenzied at times but over all made the class a very warm and open exhibition of sorts. I was even able to add to the discussion as not all the students were they forthright. I hope I didn't monopolize this though.
I met Tace after class and we headed back to her dorm room. The school didn't
Forest!
It was all a wet blur have it's normal feel by all means as it was half empty since many had taken off early for Thanksgiving. I enjoyed this quietness, and even took advantage of the extra bed in Tace's room that her roommate had vacated. Spending the evening in L&C was also a dynamic adventure. I walked out of a student film about childern in Uganda, and walked to the rec center in hopes of loosing my energy. I walked into a yoga class fortunately and solved that issue, and walked out an hour later to go by the college radio station. Enough was enough for the evening and I head abck to Tace's room, but was caught up on the way at the Co-op, the student cafe, where terribly obnoxious band from San Fran was playing. Little Teeth.
I met Laura, whose broken arm I found out was caused when she was in Olympia last week with many L&C students taking part in the protest U skipped. She loves police brutality as well. We played Set, which she won first, and the second game a 3rd player, Noah tied with me and her. That called the night for sure, which was indeed relaxing.
Heading back to Tace's place, I did my usual pre-bed chores of reading (Coleman's Christabel), and eventually nodded off to the other world.
I must go meet a student for lunch here at Reed, and will maybe update on today later on; pictures too if my camera doesn't mind!
