We love NYC! We love this city We were on our way to our lovely little Lutheran sanctuary. We got the start of true NY hospitality with our cranky non-english speaking new york shuttle bus driver and chris and I were in a 4 person manwhich weaving through the honking streets. Being the good little lutherans we are, we had separate rooms but they were very nice and clean, ( thanks for the recommendation Jane and Liz!) and Chris suspiciously took the one overlooking the ladies gym. After some tv initiation we headed out for some dinner and to explore the NYC nightlife. Took me a while to get my bearings and I jumped at almost every strange looking thing we saw, which is a lot of jumping for NYC. By the end of the trip ... read more

The Missions of San Antonio I have a picture in my mind: there’s this little Franciscan monk wearing a black robe. He has a fringe of hair around an odd-looking bald spot. The sun is hot, maybe a hundred and ten degrees. This guy is lugging fifty and sixty pound rocks across an empty clearing and piling them carefully one on top of the other. Maybe he pauses to take a drink of tepid water. Maybe he takes a second to wipe his brow. Maybe he prays. As my “eye camera” draws back from a perspective in the clouds somewhere, I see many of these dark shapes moving across a desolate clearing carved out of a savage desert. What are they doing? Why are they doing what they’re doing? They are building Missions - churches. They ... read more

Just wanted to add a few more thoughts/reflections on what has to be one of the most memorable weeks of my life. I can't speak for the team today because I'm no longer with them, but based on the comments throughout the week, I think many of us had similar feelings to all that we experienced. As I wrote yesterday's blog, all I could think is how do I ever put into words all that we experienced this week. I know I've kept you up on the factual stuff of the projects we did this week and the joy of seeing a foundation become a house, but it's been difficult to describe the feeling involved with it. The blisters, the scrapes, the sore joints--they all pale in comparison to the difference this is going to make ... read more

Saturday September 27, 2008 Thursday it was time to move on to warmer climes. Santa Fe was on our list, as was art by Georgia O’Keeffe. In our new Pitt Meadows home, there are two fireplace walls just waiting for special decoration and one of our ‘must do’s’ on this trip was to find some southwestern art. Santa Fe is famous as an artist haven, and it more than lived up to the reputation. We approached Santa Fe from the north on highway 84. Little did we know that when Kayla called several halts on the highway just north of Santa Fe to take photos of the glorious layered cliffs and spires, we were also photographing Georgia O’Keeffe’s home at Ghost Ranch. Right away we recognized the photos of Ghost Ranch taken by others, some of ... read more

Here are a few pictures and videos from a short trip to Oahu with friends last week. Ingrid and Jim (friends from Sacramento) and Ingrid's brother Mark (from Annapolis) and I all met up in Oahu at Bellows AFS for a few days. Jim went diving every day while Ingrid and I hung out at the beach. Mark had to spend a few days at the Marine Corps Base at Kane'ohe Bay. Fortunately his nights were free...we all had a great time. Nothing really beats Hawaii with friends. Bellows AFS is on the East side of Oahu, quite a distance from Waikiki Beach and Honolulu. I recommend a visit to Waikiki, if for no other reason than to say you've been there, but I would never want to spend a great deal of time on Waikiki...there ... read more

G'day all, well the blog's falling a little behind so we'll try to bring you up to speed with more photo's and less writing. San Fran was a cool place, was a lot more laid back and friendly than LA, except with lot's more homeless people. Apparently the city makes an effort not to move them away so that's why you see a lot more, but they were all cool and and no problems. San Fran was also the only place in the US where we had to get out the jeans and jumpers. When we drove into the city from Yosemite it was just like you see in the movies, we drove over the bay bridge and all we cold see was the road and above, everything under the bridge was covered in Fog. We ... read more
