Day 46 and 47, Monday and Tuesday, 9 and 10 July 2007 Monday 9 July 2007, Day 46 - Travel to Washington and city tour. We had an early train today from Penn Station to Washinton, which was so easy to catch and pretty much on time as well, which is always a good start. Directly from Union Station in Washinton, we left for our 4 hour tour of the city. Union Station is a pretty nice station, I have to say and the city itself, impressive. We drove through what I assume is the main part of the city, where all the embassies, consulates and government buildings are, on to the White House. A short piccy stop and we were on our way to Arlington Cemetery to see the JFK and Jacqui Kennedy grave ... read more

Because my decision to go to Seattle was so spontaneous, I arrived there absolutely unprepared. A wonder that I found the hostel and had a place to sleep there! However, more or less at the same moment like me arrived Oli. He’s from England who just arrived from Japan and China, he’s next station will be New York. So we stayed together for one week and had a lot of fun. Seattle is pretty cool city. People are very kind and relaxed and downtown isn’t too big. So we could get to almost every spot by foot. On 4th of July we went to Alki beach which is a little bit outside of Seattle. At the evening we could so from there the firework which was quite impressive. Besides shopping (in almost every shop was ... read more

Map from Tigard to Seattle Mem Da On our way to Wolf Haven… rode up the coast towards Tenino. Stopped in Seaside for breakfast. Had a scare that something was leaking from the bottom of the car but turned out to be nothing. Elan says there is something about Oregon that makes one want to drive slowly, it’s in the water he says, though, he has not drank too much Oregon water. Today is the first day since we left that there is no sun. It is grey and overcast with a few sprinkles but not the rain that we left in OK. I think it would be quite fun to rent a beach side house with a group of friends! One could go swimming, boating, having a kumzitz on the beach. (bonfire) We have a ... read more

Today, we decided to sleep in a little, not remembering that the sun actually rises around 4:45am and our curtains were not quite drawn tight enough. We got ourselves up and ready and packed our bags. We rented our car with Budget and they came and picked us up at our hotel at 10am. After signing away my life and left arm on the rental agreement, we were on our way south on I5. We quickly decided the best route and headed right for Mt. Rainier National Forest. We arrived at the main gate of the park around 12pm. After paying the $15 fee, we were on our way. We decided to head for Paradise, that's right... Paradise... which is the location of the main visitor center on Mt. Rainier. On the way up we ... read more

Today, we started our day fairly early. We decided to take a walk down to the Puget Sound for our breakfast. We picked up a pastry and a drink at Starbucks (Imagine that!... There is one on every corner here) and headed out to the end of a pier. After breakfast and a few minutes of taking in the beautiful view of the Olympic Mountain Range, we headed back uphill to the hotel. The Moore's picked us up around 10am and we headed out for a personal tour. We headed down to Safeco Stadium to try to pick up some tickets for the Mariner's game on Sunday, July 15th, but the box office was not open. From there we headed up to the Queen Anne Hill Section of town to take in the beautiful view ... read more

Toured up to Mt. Rainier National Park, passing Mt. St. Helen’s on the way, which unfortunately was shrouded in clouds so we couldn’t see it. Made it to Rainier and discovered it’s early in the season for them (snow still melting at mid and high elevations) so we had no problem getting a campsite. Immediately saw the impact of the huge November 2006 floods which devastated sections of the trails around the park. The park has tons of rivers, and many bridges are still out. Back at camp, we were fascinated and repulsed by the “toilet sink” - is it a toilet or a sink? Seems to be where you’re supposed to wash your dishes, but also requests people to empty their ‘toilet receptacles’ in it - sounds like an invitation for gross things to ... read more

Our trip started this morning at 7:20am EST. We flew out on USAirways. Because of all the business travel I do, we were automatically upgraded to first class all the way, which was very nice. We enjoyed more leg room, lunch, and many perks that you don't get in coach. My mom was siked, since this was her first time..... We flew from Syracuse to Philly, Philly to Phoenix, then Phoenix to Seattle. On the Philly to Phoenix leg, there was a Washington Capitals NHL Hockey player sitting in front of us. That is my claim to fame... When we arrived in Phoenix, my mom swears she saw Snoop Doggie Dog, which is her claim to fame. When we were getting close to Seattle, we got a lovely view of Mt. Rainier. We were greeted ... read more

Mile: 0 After nearly two years of planning, we're down to less than one week until our getaway on the big road trip. Much gear has been purchased, house-sitters have been engaged and reservations made, (alas, summer crowds preclude total road trip spontaneity). Bill has finished the modifications on the van, taking out the center seat and adding a table . Under said table will reside 4 rubbermaid bins. Each of us gets to take whatever we want - as long as it fits into one of those bins. The top box will hold camping gear. The first of many destination stickers has been applied to it - from Archie McPhee’s in our beloved Ballard. Just like an old steamer trunk, the top box will declare our ports of call, the tackier the sticker, the ... read more

"Go away rain! Come again another day, like tommorrow, after we're done with our tour!" I guess it was to be expected, we were very close to Seattle after all. After a late night at the gambling hall, The Tulalip Casino, waking up this morning was difficult. When we did, we headed straight for the motel's conference room. Our continental breakfast was waiting for us, good thing 'cuz we were hungry, as usual. We headed south afterwards hoping that we could find it in ourselves to pedal all the way to Portland. Ha! As if! :) Sleeping in, dinkin' around, and excessive breaks(after all, we are on vacation) prevented us from accomplishing such feat(250 miles in one day). Rene and I have done 200 miles in one day, but we raced the clock, without gear. ... read more
