Well so far I've had a lot of fun here in the land of the free, went to a mean as metal show on Friday night, some fucking good bands, a real good Taiwanese black metal band called The Chthonic, they were fucking good! also saw another good band called Nile, music straight from the pits of hell! They were both playing again the next day at Ozzfest, but we only got to see Nile again. Ended up leaving Ozzfest early missing alot of the big acts, and went to see this pirate sea shanty band, was well worth it, had a really good night and meet a lot of cool random people.... read more

We woke up to the sound of airplanes overhead. Our hotel room was very nice, and it seemed quite new. The location was interesting, as it was right next to a large Boeing Plant, with an adjoining air field. We started the morning a little slower than we expected, but made our way to the Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle fairly early. We enjoyed the market. It was very colorful and entertaining. The Pike Place Fish Co. was our major entertainment, and we must have watched the "fish throwing" show for at least 20 minutes. I also spent some time photographing the wonderful produce displays in the market. It seemed every bean was lined up perfectly. After a stop at the Spice Company, we found our way to a fresh donut stand, and we ... read more

We really was sleepless in Seattle, cos it was so dam hot in our dorm room! Back in Seattle we had 4 days to see the sights.... First stop Starbucks - the first ever Starbuck is right here in Seattle. Established in1971! There were loads of these odd pigs around everywhere we went, it was Seattles way to celebrate the Chinesse year of the Pig! Pike Street Market - excellent market place selling all sorts, but the most thrilling is the fish market where they throw the fish around and sing while they do it, was cool to watch! Space needle - Went to see it but never went up it! ... read more

Took Molly’s advice and headed to the Enchantment Lakes region in Washington. The permits are limited so you have to go to a 7am lottery, which forced us to have one of our first mornings waking up to an alarm clock all trip. But we arrived for the lottery and there were just enough permits for everyone wanting to go up that day - hurray! We packed up, and hit the trail in the blazing sun. The town we left from (Leavenworth, a funny Bavarian-themed touristy town) had temperatures predicted to be over 100 that day. We sweat buckets on the way up - all 5800’ of elevation gain. But the grunt hike was well worth it - the scenery was spectacular! The first of the ‘Enchantment Lakes’, Lake Viviane, was beautiful and we decided to ... read more

So I've arrived, my plane out of the NZ was delayed by 6 hours! They gave us free food vouchers while we were waiting though, and when we arrived in LA they gave us some more, they also re-booked my Seattle flight for me, so I ended up arriving just 3 hours late, sweet! Today Josie took me out to this sweet as waterfall place out in the woods, a swim was well needed as today it was apparently the hottest it's been in 10 years!... read more

Our day started at the crack of dawn this morning! We wanted to be on the first ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, BC. The alarm clock rang at 5:30am and we were in line for the ferry by 7:00 am. We left the car and grabbed some to go breakfast. I stopped and talked to Bill at the tourism booth for some recommendations on what to see in Victoria. The ferry took about 90 minutes and we drove right to our hotel and parked the car. We set out to see the sights of Victoria, starting with the Parliament buildings. We signed up for the free tour and it was great. They took us through the building and we even got to meet a famous character from Victoria’s past, “The Hanging Judge”. Our tour ... read more

Pacific NorthwestEmily Ponto The Sun woke us up this mornng very early. We were up and out on the town before 8am. Last night, we stayed in Pacific BeachWA on the Olympic Penninsula, which has a population of about 10 people. This morning we had breakfast in a little coffee shop across from our hotel. It was a very cute, modern shop in the middle of this tiny, deserted town. Susan, the lady working at the coffee shop recommended we see Ruby Beach today, so we added that to our list. After stocking the cooler at the local Save n' Shop, we headed out of Pacific Beach. Our first stop was to the Quinault Fish Hatchery in the Olympic National Forest. We toured the tiny museum, and then headed out to the fish tanks. Rick Running ... read more

We headed to Seattle and met up with Colleen, a friend of Shane’s from high school. We all cooked up a storm and headed to a 4th of July BBQ. Had much fun with Colleen and friends, and then moved on to a different part of town to watch a great fireworks display. A perfect all-American holiday! Next day we explored around Colleen’s hood of Ballard. Spent quite a while overlooking the locks, as we thought the ship transfer from sea to river would be exciting - after all, hundreds of tourists like us were overlooking the exchange! -- we learned the hard way that all you see is a slow raising of the water. Damn. We had many ideas of how they could improve the excitement - cannons, bursts of water, swordfights… alas, none were ... read more

As we move nearer to our departure date, we are frequently asked what we are doing to prepare for this. Over the course of the past 4-5 months we have jotted rough notes to create something of a list to keep us on track. Some of you will recognize since we have been qvetching about it for a while, and others are somewhat mind-numbing. One thing is for sure: moving out of your house is a great way to catch up on the great household To Do List! (B&C refer to Steve's sister Christy and her husband, Brett, who will be moving into our house and managing various household/business tasks for the year) Household/family stuff Clean out yellow desk area Set up paperless for all banking accounts Order check stamp for WAMU deposits Photocopy new ... read more

Pacific NorthwestEmily Ponto We started our day very early today in order to beat the crowds to Mt. St. Helens and make it to Seattle before 1pm. We were out of our hotel at 7am, when we noticed one of the rental car tires was low. We stopped at the gas station in Castle Rock to fill up the tire, and I ended up closing the door on my finger. OUCH!!!!! Once the tire was filled, we were on our way up the moutain. We were literally one of the first people up the road. We stopped at the Forest Learning Center about half way up, and I got some great photos while there was still fog in the valley. We took off up the road, and around the corner we met a small herd of ... read more
