We sadly left beautiful Glacier National Park and headed out Route 2 through Idaho and into Washington State. When we got to Kalispell, MT there was smoke in the air everywhere - it looked thicker to the south. We stopped in Libby, MT and had lunch, did laundry and grocery shopping. We entered Idaho and gained another hour - we are now in Pacific Time Zone. Route 2 was a very nice scenic drive. Dave liked the driving and thought it was a "great way" to come into Washington. The temperature was about 90 degrees when we got out of the mountains. It was a shock to our system, we haven't seen 90's since we left home. When we left Glacier it was in the 40's. One thing we find hard to believe is that the ... read more

Our next stop was down in Missoula, Montana. Missoula is the home of a Smoke Jumper Depot...which means its a base for the fire fighters that parachute out of airplanes to put out forest and wild fires. The tour was awesome! It was led by a former smoke jumper, and we got to see the entire facility. It was a refreshing change from just looking at dioramas and replicas...about 6 jumpers came in from a drop while we were standing in their locker room. Crazy! There are actually about 22 forest fires raging right now, mostly throughout that particular region...but there are some as far south as Riverside, CA. We learned a lot about what it takes to jump into fires, how they put them out, what they bring with them on the jump, and what ... read more

Just a few more goodbyes to go before I leave on Wednesday. There were so many people that I wanted to say goodbye to, and couldn't. Jason will be arriving a month later. Packing for 1 month is a lot harder than a week or two, especially because we are heading into fall and winter. Checked the weather report, and London is keeping up with Seattle temperature wise. I am not sure how to feel. I have been thinking about this since I started grad school, and now the time is here. There is so much to see, so much history. ... read more

So I am finally all moved out of my apartment and I am feeling a bit sad about my departure from "home" I lived in that apartment for two years, and now I am back at home with the parents waiting to depart to France! I still feel a bit numb at the thought of leaving the safe and comfortable realms of the U.S., but at the same time I am more exited every day with just the thought of going to France. Yesterday I got the email from my program director that gave me the detailed agenda of my first four days in France. I also go my address ( which really made it feel more like reality) and some other misc. information. I am stating to feel a bit more relaxed now that I ... read more

Greetings once again to all! We are currently in Texas having a wonderful time visiting with family and friends. With the help of our good friend Mark, we are now hopefully able to post some of the photos of our trip across this great land. The weather has been kind to us as we have encountered almost no rain while driving. Of course it is summer and it has been a little warmer in places than it normally is, but that is to be expected and certainly better than most alternatives. Tomorrow we continue our journey west and will take in the magnificent Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Hope this missive finds everyone doing well. A special “hello” to all in Seattle. It appears that the traditional summer weather has been absent most of the last ... read more

Day 14 After a big breakfast and a leisurely start, Terry and I popped down to the university and he showed me where he works, it made labs I have visited before look a bit like outhouses. We then all headed off to Stanley Park which is a “must see” in Vancouver and along with lot’s of other visitors we took in the sights. We popped in to see Tom and Shirley’s friend Barbara on the way out and then spent almost 2 hours in a queue to get back over the border to the US. Getting into Canada was so much easier. It was a slow trip back, with the border hold up and then an accident further down the road holding things up for almost another thirty minutes. Finally back to Hans and Catherine’s ... read more

A man of ordinary talent will always be ordinary, whether he travels or not; but a man of superior talent (which I cannot deny myself to be without being impious) will go to pieces if he remains forever in the same place. -Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ok, I know that may sound a bit arrogant, but Mozart definately was. So anyway, when we last tuned in, Soarpheat was getting ready to go on a sea kayaking trip with Chris's girlfriend Ashley and her family. Having never gone on a trip like that, none of the participants knew what was going to happen, but each had their own ideas. However, the events that took place over the next several days were far different from even their wildest expectations. The first stop was the dealer of kayaks on Quadra ... read more

070823 Hoh Rainforest, Olympic National Park, Washington After leaving Seattle I drove about 45 minutes south to Sumner Washington where my friend and co-worker Bryan grew up. I crashed at his dad’s apartment which was empty at the moment. While there I waterproofed my tent because it wasn’t very waterproof when it rained in Yellowstone. We pretty much relaxed all day, watched movies, did some laundry (since both of us are nomads we wash laundry when we can), and did general upkeep on our gear, like waterproofing, sharpening knives, whatever. I was thinking about going to Mt Rainer for a day then going to Olympic National Park for a day. Bryan suggested I use both days for Olympic National Park and stressed how cool the Hoh Rainforest on the west side of the park was. I ... read more

Days 11 and 12 Well, day 11 was a “rest day”, we lounged around the house in the morning and then went into the next village along, a place called Isaquagh so that Shirley and Ngai could get in some retail therapy. Tom and I went to a Black and Decker shop but our mantra of 110 volts, 110 volts enabled us to escape without spending money. Day 12 was much more active. We got up early and got away finally at 0745 to head into Seattle thru the morning traffic and boarded the ferry for Bainbridge Island. A quick thirty minute run saw us meeting up with John Harding who took us to his beautiful home on the island where we uplifted Phyllis and essential supplies and head off to the Olympic peninsular where John ... read more
